Simonside is a suburban area of South Shields in South Tyneside, North East England. Alongside the adjacent Rekendyke Industrial Estate it forms the Simonside and Rekendyke electoral ward of South Tyneside metropolitan borough.
Politics
[edit]Simonside forms part of the Simonside and Rekendyke ward, which elects three councillors to South Tyneside Council. As of March 2024, all three positions are held by Labour party councillors.[2]
The ward was formed by The Borough of South Tyneside (Electoral Changes) Order 2004 in which the Tyne Dock and Simonside ward was split, and the latter half merged with the Rekendyke ward (the former wards had been defined by The Borough of South Tyneside (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1980).
In 2023, the Local Government Boundary Commission started a review of the wards of South Tyneside, which proposed removing the Rekendyke Industrial Estate from the ward, and renaming it to "Simonside".[3]
Simonside and Rekendyke is one of 10 wards which elects the South Shields seat of the UK Parliament. As of March 2024 Emma Lewell-Buck holds the office, having been elected in the 2013 South Shields by-election.
Education
[edit]Simonside Primary School provides primary education for Key Stages 1 and 2 (ages 5 to 11).

St Simon's Church
[edit]The ecclesiastical parish of St. Simon's was created on 29 October 1875 from part of the adjacent St. Mary's at Jarrow, with the church being built in 1880.[4]
