Biographical Information
[edit]I'm a 21 year-old female born in Schweinfurt, Germany and raised in Columbus, Ohio. I'm the eldest of four children, with one full-brother and two half-siblings- a brother in grade school and a sister who is still a toddler.
Although I'm relatively new to computers, I'm very familiar with networking, software and hardware components of a computer. I'm mostly self taught, with a year of college as an Undergraduate major in Computer Science at Bowling Green State University. For financial reasons my education was discontinued, but I'm slated to restart as a Comp Sci major at Franklin University's online campus in early 2010. For six months I was an over-the-phone technical support agent for both consumer and business DSL customers, and it's thanks to that experience that I am more familiar with networking and computer software.
I like to keep myself busy whenever possible so it's unnecessary to list every hobby I've had over the years. However, several have had a huge impact on my habits, interests and personal knowledge base, and it's through these activities that I've found myself editing Wikipedia.
Video games are a huge influence on the lives of many people, but few have a history with gaming that is as pervasive as mine. I'm extremely fortunate in that both of my parents are avid gamers, and as a result I've been playing video games since I was old enough to hold a controller. I'm a close follower of the Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros. franchises, but I'll play a game from any genre if it catches my interest. Video games are essential for relieving stress in my life, and they also help keep my reflexes, problem solving, reading speed/comprehension and depth perception sharp.
I'm a trained musician from childhood. I've learned to read and write sheet music, and perform professional level pieces on several instruments, though since my practicing has diminished I'm not nearly as polished as I used to be. I was in choir through grade school, both in school and with the local church, and once I entered middle school I started learning to play flute, which I continued through high school. In high school I completed available music theory courses and received additional training in the art of marching band show design. I've also been trained in some percussion instruments, mostly mallets and cymbals. Privately I've studied many other woodwinds, including oboe, recorder, ocarina and tin whistle, and I have a very limited experience with pianos/keyboards.
Papercrafting is my newest hobby, but it has had perhaps the most profound impact on my life since I was introduced to video games. I discovered this wonderful art in September of 2007, on the papercraft and origami (/po/) board of 4chan. Since then I've collected hundreds of templates, constructed over fifty models and fully designed five of my own, with fifteen other works in progress and many more ideas that I would like to bring to fruition. Papercrafting is a great way to practice fine motor skills and connect 2D and 3D geometrical relationships. It's through designing papercrafts that I've learned basic 3D modeling using Google Sketchup. I hope to start learning to use Blender later this year.
Throughout middle and high school I was a very active writer, creating many different worlds through short stories and poems. My sophomore year of high school I discovered the school's literary magazine and started contributing work. Submissions were given to the English dept. office along with a worksheet detailing the writing submitted, but they were often known to get misplaced. Afraid my work would get lost I instead submitted my work directly to the staff of the magazine, and in the process became a member of the staff myself. Initially I was made the Assistant Art & Photo editor, responsible for picking up artwork from the Art club and classes and making sure they were given correct credit in the final publication, and in my spare time I copy-edited submissions and formatted them for publishing along with the rest of the staff.
I quickly noticed that the publishing process was expensive, redundant and outdated. Submitted works were retyped, printed out for editing, typed again, formatted, printed for another edit, typed yet again, and then formatted on the computer once more before printed off once again and shipped in bulk to the printing department at the school district's main office. While maintaining my regular duties I helped convert the entire process into a digital format (with several backups in case of data loss), and trained the staff to use Microsoft Publisher. My senior year I was granted position as Editor-in-chief of the magazine so that I could continue to streamline the publishing process for future students. After transferring to an online high school later that year I continued to contribute various pieces to its own publication.
After having reviewed my writing, both in class and for the literary magazine, my English teacher recruited me as a writer and chief copy editor for the school newspaper my senior year. While I had no say over content, all pieces were edited for grammar and consistency and I was responsible for the final viewing of the newspaper before the editor-in-chief took a look at it and sent it off to be published. Every staff member was responsible for writing articles, and my submissions reflected my avid interest in new technology. As a result I was appointed Technology correspondent and was responsible for filling the subsequently created tech section of the newspaper. Articles covered the topics such as the latest educational and entertainment software, the season's hottest cell phones and gadgets for students, the popularity and legality of file sharing and the impact the legislative process has on education through technology.
Today I continue to contribute to publications at work, submitting pieces for my department as part of our corporate newsletter.
While my professional experience is somewhat lacking because of my young age, I still have extensive experience as a leader of large groups. I have been elected or appointed an official of almost every extracurricular club I've ever been a member of, including class officer of the Art, Spanish, German, Key and English Literature clubs in high school, as well as the previously mentioned positions of editor-in-chief and chief copy editor of the high school literary magazine and newspaper. In college I was appointed one of two representatives for my dorm floor in the Hall Council, which included representatives from almost ten different dorm buildings. I led several award-winning art projects for my dorm and for Hall Council, completed a six week Leaders in Residence course and was nominated for the NRHH.
Today I serve as a team leader and second-shift assistant to new hires at my full-time job.
