Biography

[edit]

Fatoumata Diakité was born in 1976 in Madina Diassa.

In 1990, she was in Bamako and truly started doing music with one of her elder sisters, Djénéba Diakité, who hired her as a choir singer[2].

She worked for other singers like Ramata Diakité, Oumou Sangaré, Mamou Sidibé, Issa Bagayogo. In 1993, she co-founded with Dibé Saran (another chorus singer of Djénéba Diakité), the duo Saran & Tata with which they released Wary Be Mogo Samia, in 1996 under the label Maikano[2],[3]. This album was unsuccessful.

In 1998, at the request of Sorry Yattassaye of Kaarta Production, she recorded her first solo album Jolie. This was her first success with 30 000 cassettes légales. She is nicknamed « Jolie Diakité »[3],[2].

She traveled to France and the United States. Upon her return, she recorded the solo album Djama released on June 4, 2002, which sold 50 000 cassettes légales jusqu'en septembre 2007[3],[2].

While traveling for a concert on October 5, 2002, Tata Diakité was the victim of a grave accident. Hospitalised in Bamako, she died on January, 24 2003 as a result of injuries sustained in the accident[1]. In tribute to her, L’Album du souvenir came out ; it is a compilation of her best hits[4].
