God of War: Ascension is an action-adventure video game loosely based on Greek mythology. It was developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, and was released for the PlayStation 3 in March 2013. The game is the first in the God of War series to feature a multiplayer mode, for which downloadable content (DLC) is available—no single-player DLC is planned.[1] The game features a variety of downloadable content packs for its multiplayer mode. The first sets of DLC (with the exception of pre-launch promotional content) became available in May 2013 with more planned for release.[2]

The majority of the downloadable content of God of War: Ascension includes armors and weapons for players multiplayer warriors. The content listed as promotional content was only available through certain promotions, such as pre-order bonuses from select retailers. Later, most of this content was released on the PlayStation Store, but requires players to purchase the content, as previous customers received the content for free through promotions.

Although other multiplayer games offer DLC map packs for an additional price, Santa Monica has opted out of charging for maps, and instead, all maps released after the launch of the game are added for free with the download of software patch updates. Santa Monica's reasoning is so that there is never a situation where friends cannot play together.[3] The content listed as patch update content includes all maps that have been released.

  • Contains the Mark of the Aegean, the Mark of the Warmonger, the Mark of the Thunderbolt, and the Mark of the Dead.[15]
    Marks are tattoos for players multiplayer warriors.

    • Players who did not participate in Rise of the Warrior can unlock this through multiplayer gameplay.
  • Free DLC for the Mercenary Sword, Armor of Typhon, and Champions Hammer.[10]
    • Players who did not participate in Rise of the Warrior can now purchase these from the PlayStation Store.[8][12]

  • Added the Tower of Delphi map for the Trial of the Gods mode.
  • Updated the already available Coliseum of Persia map to feature the Trial of the Gods mode.
  • These were originally added with update 1.06, but due to some technical difficulties, these were retracted and re-released via update 1.07.[18]
Update 1.09 July 11, 2013
  • Added four maps for the new Bout of Honor mode—Canyons of Kirra, Chamber of the Flame, Landing at Delos, and Streets of Sparta.
  • Added The Whirlpool of Alecto map for the four-player versions of Team Favor of the Gods and Match of Champions modes.[25]
