Fisheries Research Vessel Kapala (FRV Kapala) was a New South Wales government fishing research vessel. Launched in August 1969 by Mrs Eric A. Willis, wife of the then Chief Secretary of New South Wales,[1] she made many research voyages trawling Australia's eastern coastline from Queensland to Bass Strait, all of which were reported on in a series of reports (1-117) (F.R.V. Kapala cruise report. No. 1-82 (1971-1982)[2] and Cruise report No. 83-117 (1983-1997)[3] Her purpose was to find new fisheries and species by testing and develping new gear.

Many new species of marine animals were discovered on her demersal fish and prawn surveys, and many named for her: the amphipod Bathyamaryllis kapala, the eel Ariosoma kapala, the mollusc Falsimargarita kapala, the stingray Urolophus kapalensis, the isopods Leptanthura kapala and Rocinela kapala. The national museum of New Zealand, Te Papa, holds 31 specimens.[8] An occurrence dataset which contains details of some of the specimens collected by the Kapala (as well as from several other Australian research vessels) gives details for 103,716 specimens.[9]
