Fronsac is an AOC for wine made in the Bordeaux wine region of southwestern France, on the Right Bank of Dordogne, west of Libourne. Previously known as Côtes de Fronsac, the appellation includes the communes of La Rivière, Saillans, Saint-Aignan, Saint-Germain-de-la-Rivière and Fronsac itself.

[edit]The viticultural area covers 785 hectares, annually producing on average 40,500 hectolitres of wine.

The great frosts of February 1956 caused less damage in Fronsac than anywhere else in Gironde due to its elevated position. [1][2][3]

Canon-Fronsac, or Côtes de Canon, is a smaller appellation enclaved by the Fronsac boundary which has the reputation of producing the finer wine of the district. Situated on the high rim of the Canon hills, it overlooks the Dourdogne.[2]
Considered the heart of the district, the appellation covers the two communes Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac, where estates are exclusive to the appellation, and Fronsac where declaration to either appellation is optional.[1]
