Young Queen Victoria equestrian, a well coloured example, dating from about 1838

Victorian Staffordshire Figures flourished throughout Queen Victoria's reign. Produced in the Staffordshire Potteries from a large number of largely anonymous factories. Notable exceptions being John and Rebecca Lloyd, Sherrat, Bentley, Ridgway and Robey, The Alpha Factory, Minton, John Carr, George Baguley, Parr and Kent, Lancaster and Sons, Sadler and Sons and Joseph Unwin. [1] Made from moulded parts using cornish clay and fired in kilns using local coal. Subject matter is often topical to the nation of the time. Also bucolic themes and entertainment of the day (theatre/circus/sport). About 4000 different versions made, quite comprehensive catalogue being A&N Hardings Victorian Stafforshire Figures 1835-1875
