Illustration of a typical Grey

The Greys, also known as Roswell aliens, Zetas, or Reticulians, are an alleged extraterrestrial life forms that appear in modern UFO conspiracy theories, and other UFO-related paranormal phenomena. They make up approximately 75% of all aliens reported in the US, 20% of all aliens reported in Mainland Europe, and 12% of all aliens reported in Britain. [1]

Appearance

[edit]

Typically, Greys are described as being, approximately 4 feet tall, with grey (sometimes blue-grey/green-grey) skin and a body that lacks muscles definition. Their arms and legs are proportioned differently to humans; with their arms often reaching down to their knees and their legs being shorter than for a human of a similar size. Their figures are described as being elongated and some reports indicate that they have only three digits on each hand. Their leg are also jointed differently to a Human's. Giving them an apparently awkward gait. Greys have a bulbous hairless head supported by a thin neck, which is dominated by large black lidless eyes. They typically have small flat noses, small mouths and small ears lacking an auricle. In some cases, Greys are reported as having slit like nostrils on a flat face.[2] [3]

Some reports have Greys wearing tight neutral colored uniform like jumpsuits. Other reports have them appearing to be naked. In most cases, clothed Greys have no determinable gender and naked Greys have no visible external genitals.[3]

The Grey in society and culture

[edit]

Although their exact appearance has varied with time and media, the concept of the Grey; "a thin diminutive grey figure with a bulbous bald head, large almond shape eyes, and minimal facial features", has existed in popular culture for over 100 years, with Grey-like beings appearing in numerous science fiction stories from the the late 19th century onwards. Including H.G. Wells' "Of a Book Unwritten, The Man of the Year Million", in which Wells writes about the hypothesis that the increasing industrialization of society would lead to humans developing into Grey like beings with shrunken bodies and enlarged brains, and his 1901 book The First Men in the Moon in which he describes the moon dwelling Selenites as being short skin grey skinned creatures, with high foreheads, no nose, and bulging eyes who walked with a strange gait due to their oddly articulated legs. [4]

The Conquers

The concept of was continued in comics and science fiction magazine into the early 20th century, including such works as David H. Keller's The Conquers, which was serialized in the Wonder stories, starting in 1929 December.

From the 1950s onwards Greys branched out into cinema and television; as the popularity of Flying saucer features increased in the post Kenneth Arnold years.

In 1965 the Boston Traveler brought Greys out of the pages of science fiction and into American's homes when it published the purportedly true story story of Betty Hill; the victims of an alien abduction. The story included details from a hypnosis session, conducted by Dr. Benjamin Simon a year earlier, in which the Hills described being taken aboard a pancake-like craft by small hairless men with no noses and slanted eyes that wrapped around to the sides of their heads. [5]

An alien seen on TV 12 days prior to the making of Hill's 'Grey' hypnosis tape

Coincidentally on the 10th of February 1964; 12 days prior to the Hill's undergoing hypnosis, the science fiction series Outer Limits ran an episode entitled "The Bellero Shield", which featured a hairless, nose less, alien with a bulbous head and 'wrap-around eyes'. [6]

Despite these similarities, Betty Hill maintained that she had not seen the Outer Limits, and said that it was unlikely that her husband had seen the episode, because he would either have been working, or preforming community activities, during the series' time slot. [6]

The 'Star Map' to Zeta Reticuli, as extrapolated by Betty Hill and Marjorie Fish

In 1968, Greys became associated with the Zeta Reticuli system, after amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish compared a Star Map drawn by Betty Hill to astronomical charts, and determined that the twelve stars depicted on the map showed the aliens home to be a planet in the Zeta Reticuli system, cituated approximately 39 light years from Earth. This lead to Greys sometimes being referred to as Zetas or Reticulians in popular culture.

In 1977, Director Steven Spielberg chose them as the alien protagonist for his film Close Encounters of the Third Kind and they have since become the archetypal alien for many UFO believers and science fiction fans.

During the early 1980s Greys were linked to the alleged crash landing of an flying saucer in Roswell New Mexico, in 1947, by a number of publications which contained statements from witnesses who claimed to have seen the US military handling a number of, unusually proportioned bald child sized corpses; with over sized heads and slanted eyes, but scant other facial features, during and after the incident.[7]

In 1995 film maker Ray Santilli claimed to have obtained 22 reels of 16mm film that depicted the autopsy of a Grey that was recovered from the site of the 1947 incident in Roswell, New Mexico. [8][9] The film with a mixture of belief and skeptisism. In 2006, Santilli announced that the film was a “Reconstruction” created after the original film had been found to have degraded. He maintained that the footage released to the public contained a percentage of the original fotage. [10][11]

Perspectives

[edit]

American researcher and alternative knowledge author Lloyd Pye advocates the hypothesis that modern Human are the result of genetic intervention by Greys, and believes that there has been a sustained program to cross breed Greys and humans. He that holds that the so-called Mexico Starchild skull constitutes empirical evidence in support of his standpoint. [12]

According to English reproductive biologist Jack Cohen, the typical Grey alien is too physiologically similar to a human to be credible as an alien; given that it would have evolved on a world with different environmental and ecological conditions from Earth.[13]

Neurologist Dr. Steven Novella argues that Greys exist only as creation of the human imagination, and that their appearance represents everything that Humans instinctively link with intelligence.“The aliens, however, do not just appear as humans, they appear like humans with those traits we psychologically associate with intelligence” Dr.Steven Novella.

According to Novella if you were to extrapolate the differences between an ape and a Human, and then apply them directly to a human model, the result would be a Grey.[14]

Alternatives

[edit]

While Greys are commonly cast as being factual/fictional extraterrestrials, a number of alternative perspectives also exist. Including that Greys are:

  • A modern iteration of ancient folklore and myth
  • Part of a government lead disinformation/plausible dependability campaign
  • A future evolution of the Human race
  • Extradimensional life forms
