From Tuberculosis treatment in Colorado Springs:
George W. Childs and Anthony J Drexel, philanthropists from Philadelphia, donated a total[a] of $10,000 (equivalent to $339,111 in 2023) towards the cost to establish the Childs-Drexel Home for Union Printers. The city gave the National Typographical Union 80 acres to build the home,[1] which cost $71,144 (equivalent to $2,412,572 in 2023) to build. It was dedicated on May 12, 1892[1] and John C. Daley was the superintendent.[2]: 378 The initial patients were members of the union who had tuberculosis and black lung from breathing carbon-based ink that was used in the printing process.[1]
The home raised pigs and chickens. On the grounds were a vegetable garden, 200 acres of wheat, and a dairy farm.[2]: 378 Patients resided in tents for open-air treatment in the early 1900s. In 1902, the home changed its name to the Union Printers Home. It has taken in more than 25,000 members of the union.[1]
It now also treats members of the general public and disabled veterans. The home now offers long-term skilled nursing and assisted living for seniors, hospice care, and rehabilitation programs.[1] The Union Printers Home closed in February 2020.[3]
