Indian National Congress is the only political party in India, which has experience of running the state government of every Indian states in post-independence Indian history.

As of October 2024, the INC is in power in the states of Chhattisgarh, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Punjab, Telengana, Uttarakhand and the union territory of Puducherry.

As part of the INDI Alliance, it shares power with JMM, DMK and JKNC in the states of Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, while it is nationally allied with AAP and AITC, even though it is not part of their governments in Delhi and West Bengal.

The Congress is the principal opposition party in the states of Assam, Arunchal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Manipur, Nagaland, Rajasthan and Tripura, not the primary opposition party in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha while it is part of the opposition alliances led by RJD, SDF and SP in Bihar, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh.
