Subcultural Deviance & Underage Drinking

1. Objective I propose to create a Flickr project showing strain theory and sub-cultural deviance through underage drinking at OU.
2. Interest This is interesting because strain theory explains why people engage in underage drinking, which is considered deviant by the University, and sub-cultural deviance explains how, according to the student sub-culture, we are not deviant by engaging in underage drinking.
3. Background reading I will read wikipedia, text book and other basic sociology texts on the following topics:
   1. I will also find scholarly research on the general issue of underage drinking. Posting links here.
   2. I will find popular press discussions of underage drinking. Perhaps Wikipedia articles, blog entrys, newspaper and magazine stories, etc.
4. General Plan I plan to take pictures of students engaged in underage drinking at social events. I also plan to take pictures of authority figures (cops, RA’s, etc.), University landmarks, and signs that prohibit underage drinking. I then plan to organize the photographs and then compose an essay explaining the link between the pictures, strain theory, and sub-cultural deviance.
5. Collaborators I will be working alone.
