Speculation about a new Doctor Who movie began as early as 2007. The BBC controller of fiction, Jane Tranter left the way open for a movie version of the series. When asked to confirm or deny the rumours she simply replied "I would not rule out a film version of Doctor Who, no,".[1] BBC Films, the feature film-making arm of the BBC finally confirmed having the script in developement in May 2009. Although BBC entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba said "there were no guarantees a film would be made and that, if the project went into full production, a release would be a long time away". The 2009 film will be the third official Doctor Who movie: Dr Who and the Daleks, and Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150AD. Both of these films starred Peter Cushing as the doctor - a part he never filled for television. The only unofficial Doctor Who Movie produced to date has been the 1996 made-for-TV film which was developed as a continuation of the TV series rather than a reboot or reimagining of the concept.[2]

David Tennant who plays the Tenth Doctor has revealed that he has signed up for an unidentified "sci-fi project". Russel T Davies, the head write has hinted at a "special project" several times which has fueled speculation that both are working on the new film.[3][4]
