C.K. Dezerterzy - a two-part Polish-Hungarian comedy film from 1986, directed by Janusz Majewski. The script was based on the novel by Kazimierz Sejda titled C.K. Deserters. A continuation of the fate of its main characters is the film Złoto dezerterów (1998), also directed by Janusz Majewski.

Plot description[edit]

The film takes place in 1918, at the end of World War I. A new deputy commander, Oberleutnant Franz von Nogay, arrives at the guard Company in the Hungarian Sátoraljaújhely. He intends to transform a motley crew of stragglers into a true imperial-royal army. Meanwhile, a clever Pole, Jan Kaniowski - known as Kania - together with the Hungarian Benedek and the Jewish tailor from Vienna, Haber, plan to desert from barracks. They obtain the money they need for this by blackmailing visiting customers of the brothel and restaurant. The three decide to join the Italian prisoner Baldini, whom von Nogay made his orderly, and Chudej, a Czech printer from Prague who pretends to be an idiot to his superiors.

After obtaining the appropriate documents, the friends board a train to Kosice. After a short stay in the town, a group of refugees sets off for Budapest. After numerous adventures, they are arrested by the gendarmerie and brought before a court martial. The trial is interrupted by news of the end of the war. This means the end of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. All soldiers can leave the barracks and regain their freedom.
