Aircraft design
[edit]Hi - looks like your article is coming along quite well, but here are a few suggestions:
- You need to be clear about the topic of the article. Is it just about design (in which case the photos of manufacturing are inappropriate - photos of wind tunnel testing, for example, would be better) or is it about design and manufacture (in which case the title should be changed) ?
- Similarly is it about aircraft designs (e.g. wing shapes) (which is already well covered in WP) or about the design process (which isn't) ?
- The photo of the 787 engine is great, but did you actually take it yourself ? what's its copyright status ?
- Ensure that everything is cited and is not a copyright violation.
- Terms like "recently" should be avoided.
- Sub-topics you might want to consider (if you can find sources) are things like history of aircraft design, selection of materials, links to design of cars etc.
- Add appropriate wikilinks (e.g. a "See also" section linking to Aerospace manufacturer and Aerospace engineering) - that may help you avoid overlap with existing articles too much.
- I don't understand the diagram - where's it come from ?
Happy editting. DexDor (talk) 21:48, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- I was adding an image to Water landing (as a result of website I looked at re change to Air safety) when I saw that you were last editor. Keep up the good work. DexDor (talk) 22:23, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
- Re cmt on my talk page. Cat Aircraft is more appropriate than cat Aviation as Aircraft design process (like Aircraft) is not about other aspects of aviation (airports, ATC, training ...). Cat Aircraft is under Cat Aviation so I don't think there's a problem re projects. P.S. you might want to copy your article into a spelling/grammar checker. DexDor (talk) 21:39, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
- Re removal of image - replied on my talk page. DexDor (talk) 21:31, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Hi there! Please visit Wikipedia talk:India Education Program and see if there is anything you can do to address the issues that are being discussed there. Many thanks, and happy editing! --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:37, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for signing up for this project. It is a very busy and active project with lots going on and we can always use more help and especially a fresh set of eyes. If you haven't done so already you might want to add Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft to your watch list as this is where much of the background discussion occurs. You may also want to watch Wikipedia:New articles (Aircraft) as this is where newly created articles get listed for peer review. Having a look over these new articles is a great way to get a feel for how things are done on the project and also most new articles need reviewing anyway. If you have any questions you can leave me a note or post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft, either way you will get a quick response. - Ahunt (talk) 20:07, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Arjunmangol, I'm sorry if I sounded a bit harsh on my talk page - I have lived and worked in education in India and I realise that a softer approach is more appropriate. However, I do think you should be making your complaints to the people who are responsible for the organisation at your end. The continuous messages that Voceditenore and I keep sending are helping to get the people at the top to take note and do something, but its not up to us to clear up the mess - and we don't have the capacity to do it even if we wanted to. If the CAs want advice I really am most happy to provide it on my talk page, but I will not be watching and editing the students' pages. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 08:42, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for the response Kudpung. You needn't apologise, its the mutual love for the Wiki that makes us so passionate about the project. Yes, I'll certainly take note of what you recommend. I'll be most happy to work with you in the future regarding the matter. :) The Mangol (talk) 09:00, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Blocking users now
[edit]Hi. I've reluctantly had to give User talk:Chaitanya.gayke a short block. In spite of Philippe's (WMF) additional warning he recreated it again on his user page which I have deleted. The block is only for 60 hours, and the IP has not been blocked. He will not be able to create an alternative account. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:55, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- You did right. Its good that you're now blocking inividual users instead of the IP :). I'm currently co-ordinating with his class CAs to reach out to him and explain the matter. Poor soul.
Thanks! :)--The Mangol (talk) 05:55, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Arjun. I'm so glad you'll be able to reach out to this student. Below, I've put a few tips that might help them and other students in a similar situation. I'll also copy it to their talk page.
- How to avoid close paraphrasing and copyright problems.
- Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing is essential reading before you even start your next draft
- One of the best ways to avoid copyright violations (and to write a better article) is to use several sources rather than relying on a single reference work or web site.
- If you do find material that you want to use or refer to, copy it into a word processing file (or draft email) completely off-wiki and re-write it there before putting it an article or your sandbox
- But don't take the material and then start changing a few words in it or moving the phrases around. First of all, this will almost always result in paraphrasing which is so close that it risks being a copyright infringement. Secondly, if you just change a word to a similar word, you risk distorting the meaning completely and making the article confusing or even wrong. Example: replacing "intermittently" from this source with "irregularly". The words have slightly overlapping meanings, but don't really mean the same thing at all in the context of describing what happens in dot matrix printing. In that context, "intermittent" refers to the paper being pulled forward at intervals, not pulled forward in an irregular way. The process of feeding the paper through is actually quite regular.
Do this instead...
- But don't take the material and then start changing a few words in it or moving the phrases around. In that context, "intermittent" refers to the paper being pulled forward at intervals, not pulled forward in an irregular way. The process of feeding the paper through is actually quite regular.
- Read the material. Digest it. Internalize it. Make sure you understand the outline of the subject well enough to explain it out loud to another person without looking at your sources. Get one of your friends or classmates to listen to your mini-lecture.
- Then make an outline of the facts only—no adjectives, no phrases, just the facts
- Now attempt a draft of the topic, just using your outline, preferably after not having looked at the source material for a little while. This will force you to write it in your own words — it's just too easy to be tempted to copy the perfect phrases that are found in professionally written material
- Draft your article gradually rather than rushing to get it into Wikipedia. This approach will result in more interesting and coherent content. It also allows you the time to review your work carefully for potential copyright violations.
- Choosing the right topic
- Make sure you aren't duplicating material already on Wikipedia. For example, Laser printing and Dot matrix printing already have long, detailed articles. It would be virtually impossible for a beginner to improve them.
- Instead look for a stub article in your area which you can expand. You'll find them at Category:Stub-Class Computing articles. Do check the article itself first, though. Sometimes the quality assessment is out of date and although still marked as a stub, it may actually be quite developed now.
- Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 07:49, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- W.O.W! This is so AWESOME! I could learn a thing or two from this myself ;). Thank you so much Voceditenore!! I'll mail this to him now itself, plus post this on my class' group wall as well. I've been writing newbie-friendly tutorials myself for refs and images. :)The Mangol (talk) 08:17, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- I'm glad you find it helpful. :-) In my days as a college lecturer in the UK, my students found it incredibly useful to give informal mini-lectures to each other on their essay topics. It not only helped them understand their material better, but helped them not to plagiarise too. Anyhow, if you are in communication with other CAs for different classes, here are some more places to look for stub articles needing expansion in various areas covered by the IEP:
- Category:Stub-Class Economics articles
- Category:Stub-Class India articles (This one has several relevant subcategories to explore)
- Category:Stub-Class Engineering articles
- Category:Stub-Class software articles
- Category:Stub-Class WikiProject Business articles

- You're very welcome Pratik. Arjun, I forgot to say that when choosing a stub article to expand, the students should make sure that it isn't tagged for lack of notability. Examples: [1], [2]. No use working on an article that might get deleted. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 13:18, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Arjunmangol. I saw your note on Voceditenore's page. I'm sorry but like Voceditenore, chasing copyvios and patrolling pages is not my normal work on Wikipedia. While I am very concerned about the problems the project has caused, I am trying to motivate people to instruct the the campus ambassadors correctly, and get them to clean up and properly instruct the students. You will find that the number of regular Wikipedians who have been helping to clean this mess up are now going on leave or going back to their normal work on the Wikipedia. I am also likely to be out of station in the days to come. If you need help, you should talk to the people who are responsible for the project. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 10:04, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Change of username
[edit]Hello. I see you have decided to change the user name that you are using. However, unfortunately, simply moving your user page and talk page is not an acceptable way of doing it, as it causes various problems due to there being a user page for an account that does not exist. There is also a risk that the pages will be deleted as userpages of a nonexistent user under speedy deletion criterion U2. To see the proper way to change your username, see Wikipedia:Changing username. You are welcome to read that page, and then request a change of username at Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple. In the meanwhile, I will move the pages back, to avoid problems such as your existing pages being destroyed when the username change goes through. When the username change happens, the pages will automatically be moved back to where you want them. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:20, 12 November 2011 (UTC)
