important deaths
[edit]I decided to make this because of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, to see who's the most important death of each year since the year 2000, I want to see the most important deaths before that in the 21st century. I'm curious on what all the people on the year articles think, @MrMimikyu1998:, @Alsoriano97:, @Jim Michael 2:, @Wjfox2005:, @TheScrubby:, @InvadingInvader:, @Deb:, @The Voivodeship King:, @TDKR Chicago 101:, @PeaceInOurTime2021:, and @Black Kite: what do you think, also don't fight on the talk page be nice, also you're free to edit on here.4me689 (talk) 05:45, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- I think it's a little premature to put deaths on, but if you want my suggestions for the 21st century (including 2000), the biggest death by far was Queen Elizabeth. However, a short list of the most notable people so far not including the Queen would be Michael Jackson, Shinzo Abe, Mikhail Gorbachev, Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali, Neil Armstrong, Steve Jobs, Osama Bin Laden, Muammar Gaddafi, Stan Lee, Stephen Hawking, Ronald Reagan, Dale Earnhardt, and George H. W. Bush. The criteria I used were people who were notable on the world stage, and/or whose death had a massive impact on the international society, either directly or occurring in one region or country first and then spreading out. As an example of this latter phenomena, I cite Earnhardt since his crash and death in 2001 caused massive ruptures in auto racing safety, especially stock car racing as seen in the US, as well as bin Laden for proving that the US, love them or hate them, is gonna eventually kill those who stand in the way of its interests or harm its citizens.
- Some other names we could include as well could be Desmond Tutu, Bill Russell, Chadwick Boseman, Rosa Parks, Pope John Paul II, Betty White, Sean Connery, Tom Petty, Kim Jong-il, Rush Limbaugh, Margaret Thatcher, David Bowie, Arnold Palmer, Elie Wiesel, Nancy Reagan, Boris Yeltsin, Diego Maradona, Suharto, Kobe Bryant, Jeffery Epstein, Elizabeth Taylor, Saddam Hussein, Shirley Temple, Maya Angelou, Satoru Iwata, Fidel Castro, and Kim Jong-nam. I'd include all these guys' names, but maybe not their potrait.
- If we were to play Crystal Ball and add deaths that likely would occur in the 2020s which should be added to this list once they happen, I'd add Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Ali Khameini, Jimmy Carter, Jiang Zemin, Akihito, Shigeru Miyamoto, Larry Ellison, and Manhoman Singh.
- I think that 1 per year isn't a good metric; 2022 had three extremely notable deaths while 2021's most notable was either Desmond Tutu or Betty White. Same with 2000 and 2001; 2000's arguable most famous death was maybe Pierre Trudeau or Alec Guinness, while 2001's George Harrison and Dale Earnhardt each surpass Guinness or Trudeau. - I guess this is to determine whose deaths to include in the lead of each main year article. Different years have different numbers of highly important deaths. Therefore we shouldn't include a fixed number per year. This year's lead needs to include Shinzo Abe, Mikhail Gorbachev & Elizabeth II. Last year's needs to include Desmond Tutu. In 2016, many very notable entertainers - including David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince & George Michael - died, but I'm not sure which ones we should include. 2011's needs to include Osama bin Laden & Muammar Gaddafi. 1997's needs to include Diana, Princess of Wales. Some deaths are high profile & widely reported internationally because of their circumstances, demographics, looks etc., even though the people weren't notable, such as Sarah Everard & Gabby Petito - they shouldn't be included.
- This discussion should be on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Years, where far more people who are interested will see it. Jim Michael 2 (talk) 08:51, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- Frankly, I think this is an inappropriate idea. It's difficult enough to decide which deaths should be included in the year article, let alone which should be included in an article like this. Deb (talk) 15:39, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- Heres my format I recommend of typing this out on
- 2000 -
- 2001 -
- 2002 -
- 2003 -
- 2004 -
- 2005 -
- 2006 -
- 2007 -
- 2008 -
- 2009 -
- 2010 -
- 2011 -
- 2012 -
- 2013 -
- 2014 -
- 2015 -
- 2016 -
- 2017 -
- 2018 -
- 2019 -
- 2020 -
- 2021 -
- 2022 -
- put the sentence right next to the year, and three is the max because I don't want to make this page too long. Also @Jim Michael 2: and @InvadingInvader: can put you choices in this format, you don't to, but it will go the extra mile, I'll put mine down later. 4me689 (talk) 16:50, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
- Ultimately, I agree with Deb; it's too premature to do this. I would also encourage you to follow Jim Michael's advice and put this with WikiProject Years. InvadingInvader (talk) 16:54, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
