UNBLOCK REQUEST

Request reason:

I just noticed my bookstore's IP address has been blocked for Sockpuppetry. I'm requesting an unblock of the IP address since it looks like the block was the result of a misunderstanding. This IP address is that of a book-and-dvd store in which the store computer is available to certain bookstore customers as a shared device. Only customers who do not own a personal computer of their own are permitted to use the bookstore IP to get onto the internet. A number of these customers are elderly and are heavily interested in similar film history and science fiction topics. Several of them created a wikipedia account so they could edit wikipedia from our bookstore location. These people are all separate individuals, they are not sockpuppets. Each customer has his own wikipedia account. You are blocking the IP address for the entire bookstore and thus hurting a number of totally innocent people. I don't even see a mention of these editors committing vandalism to wikipedia; all they do is attempt to edit the wikipedia articles they are interested in. If any of them have committed vandalism to wikipedia, please inform me and I will insure that they do not use our public computer to access wikipedia ever again from the bookstore. But from my understanding, none of these editors have actually done anything wrong. They are not sockpuppets, they are all individual store customers who we trusted to use our IP. Each editor is only permitted one wikipedia account, and they each have their own separate password. They have been contributing to wikipedia for years and giving of their own time and effort to improve the articles. We weren't aware that allowing people to use a public computer to access your site was not allowed in your rules. Please reconsider this block as it harms a lot of innocent people who are being hurt from this misunderstanding? Not everyone owns their own personal computer and some people can only access the internet from a shared public computer. If you want to block their individual accounts for specific acts of vandalism, that's different, but PLEASE don't block our bookstore's IP address?? There are no acts of vandalism involved here, these are all good people who just seek to improve wikipedia with their contributions. Thanks for any help you can provide. It is appreciated. If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Note that your initial statement should be within the unblock request, replacing the words "Your reason here". I've done this for you here. 331dot (talk) 21:23, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm curious as to how you verify that a customer doesn't own a computer in order to permit them access to yours. The trouble here is that if one of the users of this public computer gets blocked, the underlying IP is also blocked to prevent block evasion. Other accounts can also potentially get blocked(as some are in this case according to the SPI). 331dot (talk) 21:26, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for responding. The bookstore has been in business for 46 years and the owner knows the customers personally. Some of them have been shopping here for 30 years, they are elderly retired movie fans for the most part. A lot of older people don't own a personal computer. None of these people are even being accused of any type of vandalism, their contributions for the most part have improved the articles they worked on, as I think you will agree if you look at their long editing histories. None of them have actually been accused of doing anything malicious or detrimental to wikipedia. They are being accused of being sockpuppets, but each one of them only has one account and one password. Their only offense is that they have had to use the bookstore's shared IP in order to get online. These are good-intentioned and knowledgeable people who will be deprived of their editing privileges simply because they use the same public computer to access the internet. Isn't it obvious their intentions have only been to make wikipedia more accurate? They didn't know using a shared IP was illegal. Thank you for your consideration in this matter. It is appreciated. Akmadomad (talk) 19:28, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PS - If any of these editors were accused of vandalism or doing anything detrimental to wikipedia, I wouldn't allow them to use the computer any more. But truthfully I've read the (sockpuppet) complaint against us, and I can't find a single accusation of actual wrongdoing against any of these editors. Akmadomad (talk) 19:39, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It might help if the HerbLightman account requested unblock. The issue with that account seems to be a lack of communication and removal of content without adequate explanation. It isn't against policy ("illegal", though we aren't a government with laws) to use a shared computer, but it must be clear amongst the users that they are different people. 331dot (talk) 11:50, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The Herb Lightman account can't be unblocked without unblocking the bookstore's IP address. Someone blocked the bookstore's entire IP and none of our customers can use the public computer to access wikipedia. The various editors can get back onto wikipedia simply by going to other IP's and creating new accounts, but my bookstore IP is being blocked and the bookstore owners haven't violated any wikipedia rules. Why is my bookstore's IP being blocked? Can't that be fixed? Thanks for any help you can offer. Akmadomad (talk) 22:59, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not a moderator, but on this and the other accounts blocked on the IP, it is several accounts editing the same article often without sources or using sources that fail to follow the basic Wikipedia rules (basically that of MOS:FILM and WP:RS). Often when they were warned about these edits, these back logs of edits were removed or deleted by the user or other users. Or just additions like citing other wikis as sources. here These are accounts that have been around for three years or more and there has been little to no effort to learn the rules to contribute to Wikipedia within it's own rules. Andrzejbanas (talk) 18:16, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Once HerbLightman was blocked, the underlying IP(apparently your bookstore) would be autoblocked to prevent block evasion, and anyone else using the same IP would be blocked as socks evading the block if they made similar edits(as Andrzejbanas noted). That's why I say HerbLightman should request unblock. 331dot (talk) 23:25, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Should HerbLightman request the unblock on his own talk page? Can you send him a link for the unblock request? There seems to be several request methods, it's a bit confusing. Akmadomad (talk) 23:35, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have posted the instructions on their user talk page. 331dot (talk) 00:05, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I posted the request but no one got back to me. Did I do it correctly? I don't even know why my account was blocked. Thanks for any help you can offer. Akmadomad (talk) 21:49, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Are you saying that you posted HerbLightman's unblock request? 331dot (talk) 22:13, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, I mean my request above for Akmadomad. User Herblightman has also posted an unblock request as you suggested. No one has replied to the situation. The bookstore IP is still blocked as well. Akmadomad (talk) 18:46, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is a complicated situation, and it's going to take a volunteer investing a lot of time in it to review it, so they will need to have the time available. It may take some more time. 331dot (talk) 18:50, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't someone be contacting me by now though? Akmadomad (talk) 17:50, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand that statement, because multiple people are, in fact, contacting you. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 18:34, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficient for any reviewing administrator to take action. You are welcome to request a new block review if you substantially reword your request. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that

  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
    1. understand what you have been blocked for,
    2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
    3. will make useful contributions instead.

Please read the guide to appealing blocks for more information. Yamla (talk) 12:00, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please help me get unblocked? I own a bookstore that allows its computer to be used as a public IP to allowmy better customers to access wikipedia. Now I'm being accused of being a sockpuppet simply because several of the customers share some of the same interests regarding editing wikipedia articles. My acount and my IP has been blocked.
