National Assembly

Thanks for the cites on the article. I've been plodding along sporadically getting citations for verifiying things in the article, ultimately I'd like to get the whole thing verified. It's nice that when I put a citation needed tag on something it's taken seriously by another user, usually I just get an argument. There seems to be some misconception out there that adding this tag to an edit means that it is disputed somehow, but this not the case, we should really verify everything. Anyway thanks again. New userboxes

Please do not make new userboxes in template space. They should be made in userspace per WP:GUS. Thank you. Also, the way you were using fair use images wasn't acceptable; you can't just use the logo for decoration everywhere the team's name comes up. --Cyde Weys 15:34, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Graduation image

I've just marked Image:Graduationdurham.jpg for deletion because it's licensed under the CC-BY-NC-SA license; unfortunately, this doesn't comply with our image use policy as it's a non-commercial-only license and we can't accept those. You might want to watch out for this in future, to save yourself the hassle of uploading an image only to get it deleted.

Unfortunately so; any Creative Commons license with the -nc or -nd (non-commercial or no-derivatives) suffixes isn't considered fully free by our image policy. Non-commercial may seem fine, as Wikipedia isn't a commercial project, but we aim to be freely reusable - and prohibiting commercial use can potentially make it legally difficult to produce print editions, or sell CD copies (as happened very successfully with the German edition). Non-derivative works is a little less clearcut, but the rule seems to be that we don't want them - not being able to alter them if need be is just too much of an inconvenience for the limited benefit we'd get from including those images.

For future reference, the CC-BY (attribution) and CC-BY-SA (attribution and share-alike) licenses are "free by Wikipedia standards", but not the other CC licenses. It's quite irritating checking for this on flickr - they really could do with displaying the different licenses using different coloured symbols, or something, rather than just a link...

To get the images deleted, just remove them from whatever pages they were used in and add {{db-noncom}} to the image description page. Thanks, and again, apologies for the inconvenience. Shimgray | talk | 22:49, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, Alex. Thanks for your note. I am interested and have the page on my watchlist, but I won't be able to help much for a while.

I am trying to cutback on WP to catch up on some things I've been neglecting in real life. Also, I put most of my WP time working toward a release version, or better version.

Naming Conventions

Hello, Alex!

I put a question about name conventions for en:wiki articles on foreign places on the WikiProject Geography talk page. Was this a sensible place to put it, or should it be at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Geography#Disscussion and structure (shouldn't it be discussion, by the way?), or somewhere totally different? Geography as an academic subject surely has very little to do with wikipedia article name conventions; but where else could I ask, or read earlier discussion? University of Wales

Hi Alex, just a quick note to say thanks for your recent contributions to the University of Wales + associated articles. Its all looking good. I've been meaning to tidy it all up a bit recently but never quite got around to it, save from adding infoboxes and scarf colours to the constituent articles, but with work from yourself, and User:Sloman who formulated the fantastic template, the articles are beginning to get up to speed, so thanks! Durham college arms

Hi Alex,

First, thanks for all your work on the Durham University and College pages.

I notice that you've edited several of the Durham college articles replacing the versions of the college arms that were there with versions from the college web pages. My understanding of copyright on arms is that, while the basic design is obviously unchanging, the style of drawing of a particular version is subject to its own copyright (see Wikipedia:Copyright on emblems). Unless you have reasons to think otherwise, my understanding is that these new images are copyright, and not really subject to fair use, because free versions (except for Josephine Butler) exist (though it would be nice if the GFDL versions included helms, mantling, mottos etc. - I may work on adding these).

Creative Commons licenses

Please be carefull when uploading Creative Commons licensed images from Flickr (or elsewhere), not all Creative Commons licenses are considered free content for example Image:Castlecollege.jpg from http://flickr.com/photos/ants_in_my_pants/148884707/ is licensed as Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0, yet you uploaded it as simply Attribution 2.5. These are nowhere near the same licenses (see our Creative Commons Licenses article for details). Most importantly images limiting either commercial use (nc) or the ability to make derivative works (nd) can not be used on Wikipedia (except as fair use if they fulfill all our criterea. Since this image uses a NonCommercial license and fail our fair use creiterea for beeing reproducable I have deleted it (not to mention beeing a copyright violation since you uploaded it with incorect copyright info). If you have uploaded any more images from Flickr please double check that the license information you have provided are actualy match that of the original image and that the license is actualy usable. Crest of Queen Mary, University of London

As the crest isn't used for day to day purposes, it's not the most familiar of pictures. There's been a query as to whether Image:Qmul-logo.gif actually is the current crest (and I'm not on campus at the moment so can't easily check) - can I ask where you sourced it from? Orphaned fair use image (Image:Crestrhcl.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Crestrhcl.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.
