Help request
[edit]Hey! Which page do you specifically have in mind? It might work out better if I have an example to work with. The most important template you are going to use in these cases is Template:For. There are explanations for loads of different cases there (see Template:For#Other_uses). For a template, just sub in the information you need, and then put the template where you need it. Try this, if you need something more specific/clear, just leave a message on my talk page. SpencerT♦C 23:29, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
- The "small ad" automatically notifies you when someone posts to your talk page. Also, sometimes people refer to messages on their own talk page, to keep the conversation in one place (such as DGG, who responded to you on his own talk page: User_talk:DGG#help_request. He gave a very thorough response, probably better than mine).
- First, stub-sorting. This is a little message at the bottom saying its a stub, and a list is viewable at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types (More specifically, Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types/Culture may be more helpful; I have not looked thoroughly at it to see which stub message would work best.
- When looking for help, try a Wikiproject, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Linguistics. Some are faster than others at responding, but it's there where you will find people more experienced in the topic area. I don't know if that's the best Wikiproject for the article, and maybe something at Wikipedia:Linguistics#Descendant_Wikiprojects is better?
- Another important thing to consider with an article like Meal Ticket (idiom), is the Wikipedia policy that Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a dictionary. I'm not sure where you envision the article, but I encourage you to see that page and see where the article you created fits into that.
- I hope this helps, and I also hope I answered all of your questions you left on my talk page. Happy editing, SpencerT♦C 02:58, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Help formatting my user page
[edit]
This help request has been answered. If you need more help, please place a new {{help me}} request on this page followed by your questions, or contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page. |
As you can see on my userpage, I have a sidebar underneath the body of text. I want to have the sidebar at the top and the text wrapped around it. Alternatively, I would like to put the sidebar underneath the Babel box so that they look like a single sidebar and have the text on the left. More importantly, I'd like to learn how to wrap text around sidebars and boxes to be able to do it in the future by myself. Asinthior (talk) 12:43, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Is that what you wanted? CTJF83 15:12, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- HAHA, thanks! no problem, come to me whenever you need help. I can adopt you also, if you're still looking....CTJF83 15:26, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
Adoption
[edit]LOL, tis true, let's do it! CTJF83 15:41, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Perfect then, what should we do now? Cut our fingers and sign a piece of parchment with our blood? Maybe I should remove the userbox that says I'm looking for and adopter... Also, I should be remove from a category or list somewhere, that's meant for users looking to be adopted, right? If you'd point me in the right direction I can do the paperwork, or bloodwork if that's what it takes.
- LOL...WP:ADOPT is pretty vague on how this all works. I mean there are no specific guidelines, that I've found. I guess if you need help just ask me, and I'll keep an eye on your edits and steer you in the right direction. CTJF83 16:04, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- I hope you don't mind but I'll look up if there's any "paperwork" we have to file. I want "us" to be official, heh. It's really great that you offer to help me and look after my edits, but could we also maybe figure out a program of things I'd need to learn? I read somewhere some user had such a thing and was making it available to other adopters. We could take a look and think of it as a starting point. What do you think?Asinthior (talk) 16:18, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Ya, I mean there is so much stuff on Wikipedia, and depending on where you want to work, there are vastly different directions we can go. Hopefully you find what you are thinking of, or at least something to help steer us in the right direction. Guess I forgot to say, you an remove the userbox if you want, I'm trying to find the one that says "This user has been adopted by this user", but again, WP:ADOPT is pretty vague. CTJF83 16:23, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Cool, added the box. Make sure to add the corresponding template to your user page. This is fun already. OK, I'll go into deep information search mode for a while, so maybe you won't hear from my in half an hour or so. I want to lookup that program that I rambled about above.
- Also, I was looking at your userboxes and would like to steal 95% of them, but I won't, I swear. Asinthior (talk) 16:40, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Ok, do you have a direction you want to go on Wikipedia? For example, I started off more as a content creator and worked on WP:GAs and WP:FAs, but now I'm more in the maintenance/help area. For a while I was working on WP:AFD, weighing in on discussions, closing them. Lately I've been watching things like Category:Wikipedians looking for help (which is how I found you) and Category:Wikipedia semi-protected edit requests. Reading over your page, you might enjoy joining and working on Wikiprojects like: Wikipedia:WikiProject Genetics, WP:LGBT, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Sexology and sexuality. Also, let me know if I use any American jargon you don't understand, I'll try not to, but might be hard.
- Ok, just saw your last post when I was typing the above. I'm actually about to leave in a bit to play some Rock Band 3 with a friend, I spend way, way, way too much time on Wikipedia, it's a horrible addiction, lol. Please, feel free to steal any and all of the userboxes you want off my page! CTJF83 16:52, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, I think in the intermediate-length-term I would like to become a wikielf and weigh in on discussion, trying to negotiate consensus. But before I jump into discussions I'd like to get more experience on editing articles, improving them and such. In fact I have an article that I'm dying to improve (help is being requested and I think I'm the man for the job) but I really feel like I don't know the procedures to participate. I'm better with examples. The article in question is National University of San Marcos. That's where I studied and they want to introduce information form the article in Spanish. I'm a native speaker, I could help! But I didn't get what the I had to do from the templates about translating that have been placed in the article. I would like to make that article a good article or a featured article. And maybe you could help me by telling me what to do. That would be a good start.
- At the same time, maybe a more formal "education" is in order. Worm That Turned has a lesson book that we may follow, which is in turn based on Hersfold's lesson book. Some of the topics listed, I'm already familiar with but may profit from some more in-depth review. It also would depend on what you want to "teach" me. The following topics caught my interest:
- Deletion Policies
- Permissions
- Reviewing Articles
- Wikimarkup
- Templates
- Wikiquette
- Dispute Resolution
- Policies and Consensus
- We should also discuss how to approach whatever program we come up with. For example, I would consider it extremely unfair if you had to write pages and pages of text to explain things to me. I'm open to any alternatives (I have a few but I rather tell you after you indicate your preferences if any). I'd just like to note that I perform well with "learn by doing" approaches as well as analyzing cases or examples (maybe of things you already did in the past).
- OK, I hope I didn't overwhelmed your with all that I wrote. I look forward to hearing what you have to say. Asinthior (talk) 17:31, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Dunno why I keep skipping some replies...ya, I mean it probably doesn't do much good for me to point to this, this, and this policy guidelines to read up on, we'll have to go more interactive, I'll see if Worm That Turned will help us out by providing guidance.
- Which of the 8 above topics would you like to start with? CTJF83 20:08, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- I see you're back from Rock Band session. Hope you enjoyed yourself! I hope I won't worsen your WP addiction, making you spend more time online.
- Yeah, I was thinking exactly the same on interacting. On the other hand, I think Worm That Turned went out of his way (several miles, if you ask me) to prepare material for his adoptees to learn. I mean, it's commendable but it seems an awful lot of work. And he prepared exams. And I hate exams.
- So here is a couple of really CRAZY ideas and feel (totally free) to say no and/or suggest something different. Keeping in line with us being more interactive, what would you think of us having scheduled chat sessions? We could discuss things more dynamically, you could give me examples on which you have worked before and I could ask you questions about things I don't get, you could ask me questions as an exercise for me, etc.
- My second idea is this. You find things that need to be done in Wikipedia (just as a mock example, let's say standardizing the references within article X). So you explain the task to me, I try to do it, if I have questions on how to go about it you answer them, and you check on my edits to make sure things are going well. When the editing has been done to your satisfaction, then I stop. If not, I go back and finish the job. This is a "learn by doing" approach and we would actually be helping WP.
- Both options are not mutually exclusive. A topic like Policy may be better served on a live discussion. A topic like Markup might be better handled with the "learn by doing" approach. So let me know what you think and also let me know if I'm being a pain in the ass.
- I think I'd like to start with Markup as it's a fundamental tool to do any edits. So show me all the tricks, like what you did with my userboxes and similar stuff.Asinthior (talk) 21:22, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
http://webchat.freenode.net/ works great for live chat, and I'd be cool with either of your suggestions. Help:Wiki markup is definitely one of my weaker areas, especially WP:TABLES. I'll see what I can come up with for teaching markup related stuff. This might be more beneficial if I could find specific things for you to try and format on pages. Oh, don't worry, like I said, I'm on here all the time so go ahead and bug me all you want. :) CTJF83 21:42, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Believe, whatever your limitations with markup you're still several light years ahead of me. Besides, there's plenty of things you can teach me like that thing you did above using a line to undo the indentation. I mean, I use the stuff that is in the editing toolbar and that's it. Everything else you can teach me. Asinthior (talk) 21:49, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- I have a suggestion to make for your 2nd choice. I would recommend wikiquette so that you can get even better at it. You also seem to be interessed in it. Still, it is your choice. ~~EBE123~~ talkContribs 18:16, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, this is something I would definitely consider. At the moment I don't know how to participate. As usual with WP, you need to go through pages and pages of text to learn how something works. I just intervened because the discussion caught my eye and I felt like someone had to do something. Asinthior (talk) 15:12, 20 May 2011 (UTC)
Hey-lo
[edit]I thought I'd butt my nose in to have a little chat about my adoption experiences so far. I seem to have really got into adoption over the past few months, so I might be able to offer a little guidance, or at least explain why I've done things the way I have. First things first, why did I go down the adoption school route? Well, I started off with 1 adoptee, which quickly turned into 3. My own fault, I'm too eager and I went and chatted to lots of people. So, I stopped taking on more, and plodded along in manner similar to you two. I kept an eye on their edits, sent them updates and helpful hints, chatted when they went wrong. Then another user I was helping out asked if I would adopt him. He was a lot newer and a bit less tech-savvy, so I created to school.
The idea behind it was to get the basics of wikipedia down, then ask some thought provoking questions to see how much understanding there is. I've done my best to say that the questions don't have a single correct answer, I'm just more interested in seeing people think. Maybe I went out of my way... I'm just like that. :P I keep thinking that it needs more work though.
Anyway, if you'd like to use it, I'd be happy to set you up a page. If it's too complex to use I can clerk it, leaving CTJF83 to look at your answers and see how you're doing. If not, then there's nothing wrong with that. I think it's pretty rare that people have such a structured system, all the adoption program is designed to do is help a user become familiar with Wikipedia - and however you decide to do that is the best way to do so. San Marcos University
[edit]For the university, I believe it is saying on Spanish wikipedia, the article is a top of the line Featured Article, and to help get the English article up to Good or Featured article, you can use National University of San Marcos article in Spanish. I can't read Spanish, so can't help you on that end of it. Technically you could copy and paste the entire Spanish article and translate it to English. If you do something like that, make sure you note Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia, specifically Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia#Translating_from_other_language_Wikimedia_Projects. If you want a quick GA/FA, that would be the easiest thing to do. CTJF83 19:56, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the pointers. I'll go read the links you gave me, but the main problem with the template was this note at the bottom of it:
If you have just labeled this page as needing such attention, please add
National University of San Marcos The initial language of this article was . Asinthior (talk) 21:36, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
to the bottom of the WP:PNTCU section on Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English.
- I have no idea what that means. It seems like the template is missing some information, right?Asinthior (talk) 21:36, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- I figured out it's a template that "magically" insert text wherever it's pasted. So I went ahead and put it at the bottom of the page mentioned above because the page was not listed there. I'm slow like that with new things, but I catch up eventually. Asinthior (talk) 21:56, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- I was typing up a response til my internet stopped working. But you got it :) CTJF83 22:17, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'm currently checking out the links your provided. I'll probably come back to you with questions in a while. In the meantime I have a problem translating something. Don't worry, I won't ask you to translate it for me, but maybe you can point me in the right direction so I can find some experts to ask. It's a bit technical. You know how you call a Catholic priest "father". Like "Father Raymond was my Religion teacher in high school and he was so hot I would spend the whole class with a boner." Well, the same happens with Catholic friars, we would say Fray Luis. I've never met one in my life, but historically they were really active around the time of the Conquest by Spaniards. And nobody knows what you used to call friars back then in English. So do you have any ideas who can I ask something like this?Asinthior (talk) 23:24, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- In English, I think you call friars and monks "Brother", as in "Brother John". Unless they're the leader of a group, then they may be "Father". They might also be called "Friar" (which also means brother), as in Friar Tuck from the Robin Hood legends. The distinction between monks and friars is that monks live self-sufficient lives away from the lay community, whereas friars live among the lay community and rely on donations. Ryan Paddy (talk) 19:58, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
- So I have a problem with this template:
{{translated page|es|Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos|version=46335739|insertversion=428789987|section=name}}
- When I paste it on discussion page it goes to the far right of the screen. Do you know how to center it?Asinthior (talk) 23:45, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- OK, so it's supposed to go to the far right hand side because it's an unimportant element. Still, I don't know where to position it that it doesn't mess up the look of the page. Any help?Asinthior (talk) 23:50, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- LOL, "boner"...for general non-Wikipedia questions try one of the Wikipedia:Reference desks. The "translated page" template probably should go at the very bottom in a "see also" or "external links" section. CTJF83 00:19, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks again for the help. I'll try the links. I'll keep you posted. Asinthior (talk) 01:08, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

strategy
[edit]I just saw your proposal on strategy. I thought that I will help. I am making a similar proposal on strategy too. ~~EBE123~~ talkContribs 11:23, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- I think that's great. I would ask that you add to my proposal instead of writing a new one of your own, as two proposal by single users get less attention than one with two people backing it up. So if you're up for it, we can work together on one single proposal. What do you think? Asinthior (talk) 00:12, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Hey! Good work on the edit summaries! :) Ok, this article you started is in conflict with WP:NOT#DICT/WP:DICT. Where you planning on expanding it so it wasn't just a definition? If not, it would be best to tag it with WP:G7 {{db-author}}, since Wiktonary has an article on it: Wiktionary:meal ticket CTJF83 20:59, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi there! I've been away from WP for a while. I'm always like that, I come and go as real life allows. Anyway, I took you advice and knocked on as many doors as I could to get people from the linguistics project to help with the article. I do plan for the article to become a real article, just not by me. I want people who actually know about idioms and such to write it. That's not my area of expertise. So no, I don't want the article to be deleted, I want other people to write it. I hope that's cool. Asinthior (talk) 04:42, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
- I personally won't nominate to have it deleted...but that isn't saying someone else won't, just a heads up....CTJF83 04:59, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
- I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I don't know if this article is worth the hassle, I just put it there because I wanted an answer, I was curious about the topic. So it's like an article request, only it's already an article. If it does get deleted, so be it. I don't think it should be deleted, but these days I'm not online long enough to do anything about it. Asinthior (talk) 12:47, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
