Amanda Sthers

I'm not sure about your decision to speedy tag Amanda Sthers as G11 "...because in its current form it serves only to promote or publicise an entity, person, product, or idea, and would require a fundamental rewrite in order to become encyclopedic...".   • If your wiki wants numerical sorting in categories you can request it after a community decision. See how to request it. [1]
  • When you edit text and mention a new username they are notified if you add your signature. Before this only happened under certain conditions. [2]
  • Users are notified if they are mentioned in a section where you add your own signature even if you edit more than one section. Before, users were not notified if you edited more than one section in one edit. [3]

Ryder Cup

I was adhering to the standard British English practice of spelling "practise" when using it as a verb. As it's a subject with much British tradition I fail to see why American English should prevail. Even then, I notice our American friends have added further confusion with their "practise/license" combo for both verbs and nouns by spelling them "practice/licence" when used as verbs.

As G B Shaw said: "England and America are two countries separated by the same language". I always default to British English, or my country's language, Australian English, if there's any ambiguity. GA Cup Announcement

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on October 31, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

Battle of Saipan

I wanted to let someone know that the Destroyer USS COGHLAN (DD 606) was part of the bombardment force during the invasion. Another ship wrongly spelled was in its place incorrectly. I am new to wiki edits and wanted to make the correction. Many history books on the subject including navy and marine publications correctly show this ship off Beach Red. Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Worked more on making it possible to use Wikidata items and properties to make statements about multimedia files on Commons in the future
    • Adding a list of items used in an article to the edit page on Wikipedia and co (phabricator:T144921)
    • More work on automated language links for Wiktionary (phabricator:T145412)
    • Improve the way to count and display the number of items on the main page (phabricator:T144687)
    • Solved a bug on the gadget DuplicateReferences (phabricator:T146318)
    • Clicking on the desired property while adding a new Statement didn't focus the value input. That has been fixed (phabricator:T144037).
    • Made it possible to use the bzr and cvs protocols in URL data types (phabricator:T146692)

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 October. It will be on all wikis from 6 October (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 4 October at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • Tidy will be replaced. Instead the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This would cause problems on a number of wikis. They need to be fixed first. [8]
  • <slippymap> will not work on Wikivoyage after 24 October. You should use <mapframe> instead. If you need help to fix this before 24 October you should ask for it as soon as possible. [9]
