Starting the draft

[edit]

@Cocobb8, is there anything I can do to help you?

How do you envision this story? We could ask mentors which benefits they find for themselves being mentors, or which benefits they see for the wiki. Trizek_(WMF) (talk) 15:46, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Trizek (WMF) I'm not a very good Signpost writer (never done it before), but I was thinking about something that starts with like "how and where editors ask question" to go over the purpose of mentorship, then yes benefits would be a great idea! If you would like to start drafting the entry, please feel free! I'm quite busy IRL myself at this point so I'll probably start writing stuff in about a week or so. I'm not a great writer either (surtout en anglais), but I try to improve my skills. So this Signpost piece is a good opportunity for both of us!
Where edits ask questions... Well, asking any establish user and they will respond: Village pump, Help desk, The Teahouse... The key question is: how do newcomers get there? Searching for this place is not really easy, as there is no direct access to these places. And which one is the right one? When you onboard at English Wikipedia, you are lucky if you get a welcome message with these links. This is also true at other wikis, as most of them don't provide a welcome message until you made one edit.
The Growth team worked on the path taken by newcomers when they sign up. First, you have a quick survey, to know more about newcomers. We collected responses and they are interesting to analyze. But that's another topic. Then, newcomers have access to their Homepage. There, you can find many options to start editing. And at wikis where mentorship is offered to 100% of newcomers, you have a mentor assigned to you!
This mentor is a volunteer with a bit of experience regarding editing's basics. The mentor is more likely to be the point of contact for newcomers. Newcomers can make their first edit as a question to their mentor. Or, of course, they can come to complain about something, which is an opportunity to explain what Wikipedia is.
Personally, being a mentor on my spare time was a good opportunity to rethink how I know Wikipedia. It is not the same thing to edit, and to explain how to edit.
And I'm also pretty busy, but I'll spare time to assist you there. :)

I drafted a quick lead to the article. What are your thoughts on the headers? Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 14:22, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
