Please reconsider the deletion of my page

my page was designed to show my friends and i abided all the wiki laws and policies and my page is deleted. I removed a box because i made things right and i wrote this page is fake at the bottom. please put my page back. Thankyou very much the only pickle — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theonlypickle (talkcontribs) 16:39, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

You are not allowed to have fake pages on Wikipedia, which is why it was deleted. Please find another website for that. Also, please don't remove those boxes from pages which you have created. Instead, contribute constructively! David1217 What I've done 16:46, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks and small world!

First of all, I want to thank you for nominating Anna Green Winslow for DYK. You are so, so kind! I really felt connected to her after reading her diary; even though she was born 200 years before me into a Puritan milieu, she was such an archetypical teenager, fretting about her clothes and whether she fit in with the other girls! I'm especially honored that you nominated an article I created, as I consider myself such a newbie in Wikipedia world. I was a journalist at The Associated Press in a previous life (I teach Spanish and English these days), but that is SO different than encyclopedia writing. I just wanted to thank you for being so kind.

Secondly, in the small world department, I noticed that you are of Korean ancestry. I spent almost a year in South Korea teaching English to American and KATUSA soldiers. I lived in Bucheon province, and I taught there and in Bupyeong province in 1981. (Yes, I AM old! LOL!)

Anyway, thanks!

Cheers, Ivonne — Preceding unsigned comment added by Missivonne (talkcontribs) 05:03, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

You're quite welcome about the DYK nomination—that's a nice article you've written! I'm not much into content creation myself; more of a WikiGnome type. And Korean ancestry: my mother was born there (she's Korean), but I haven't been there. (Just one little teensy thing: please sign your talk page posts with ~~~~.) Happy editing! Help for a newbie

You are so kind that I thought you would be able to counsel me.

I've gotten some really sweet gifts -- like your Original Barnstar and a baklava from Loriski. I know I'm supposed to do something with them, but I'm too dumb to know what. [insert embarrassed emoticon here!]

Could you please let me know how to do what I'm supposed to do? I suspect it goes on my User Page somehow, but, again, I'm too dumb!

Thanks for your patience!

Miss Ivonne (talk) 23:49, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Well, you can just keep them on your talk page—that's what I do, though I suppose I shouldn't let them languish there. Some people display them on their user page (just copy and paste the WikiCode under the section heading), and some people put them on a user subpage. Those seem to be the most common things to do. Did that answer your question? David1217 What I've done 23:52, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Category change

Hello! I saw you changed the category on the Toms Shoes page. I was just curious as to why. I want to make sure I don't place the wrong category if I were to actually want to get the feedback tool on another article before it's naturally implemented. OlYeller21Talktome 22:32, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Nevermind. I should have read the category page. I was made aware of the category here by Oliver Keyes (the WMF employee) and didn't think to read the category page. Sorry for the trouble. OlYeller21Talktome 22:38, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback newsletter

Hey all!

So, big news this week - on Tuesday, we ramped up to 5 percent of articles :). There's been a lot more feedback (pardon the pun) as I'm sure you've noticed, and to try and help we've scheduled a large number of office hours sessions, including one this evening at 22:00 UTC in the #wikimedia-office connect channel, and another at 01:00 UTC for the aussies amongst us :). I hope to see some of you there - if any of you can't make it but have any questions, I'm always happy to help.

Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 20:46, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Shoot, I missed the session. Ah well, I guess I'll find out what happened later. David1217 What I've done 02:01, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

A question...

Hey David!

Hope you're well! I wondered if I could ask you for some advice... I recently created this article about John P. Bennett and I wondered if it might be the sort of article that is appropriate for a DYK? I saw you've done one already, so figured you'd be a good person to ask :)

All best,

Loriski (talk) 04:48, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Well, it's long enough, new enough, and looks well sourced, so go for it! I just made some changes to the dashes on the page. Happy editing! David1217 What I've done 04:54, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Just a thought!

Hey David :)

I noticed you edited User:Meenagh's talk page while I was writing a long (but hopefully helpful :s)) ramble there too! This is just a thought - you've got a lot more experience than me - but I wondered if it might be helpful to drop him a note and explain your changes to his talk page. I've no idea what the policy on having versions of articles on talkpages is, and removing it definitely did make the talkpage clearer (though only for a moment before I wrote something almost as long!!) but I get the impression that Meenagh is already feeling pretty confused by and frustrated at Wikipedia and having their talkpage changed suddenly without knowing why might just be the straw that broke the camel's back... I wondered too if replacing it in their sandbox might be a good plan. I've been following the article since AFC and I think that the version on Meenagh's page was an old one that they cut down substantially to get it into article space, but they may still be using that version as a reference point for future edits (as it had quite a lot more information and references in it)...

Oh, and while I'm here - I promise I will look up wiki's policy on dashes before I do another article ;) but thank you so much for fixing all the dashes in my articles so far :)

All best,

Loriski (talk) 00:52, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

I agree I was a tad WP:BITEy; I was in a hurry and didn't clean up. Once I get a moment, I will explain and try to help Meenagh on their way. About the dashes; the link in the Manual of Style is here: MOS:DASH. Or, you can just add importScript('User:GregU/dashes.js'); to your User:Loriski/common.js. If you do so, a "–" button will appear in the drop-down menu next to the watch/unwatch tab. David1217 What I've done 01:02, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
You're a star! Thanks so much David! And thank you too for the ace tips about the dashes - will sort that out now :) Loriski (talk) 01:11, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Done Added some advice on Meenagh's talk. Feel free to revise my advice (and I might make your advice smaller—I would be feeling overwhelmed right now if I was Meenagh). David1217 What I've done 01:18, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you again David! I've tried to shorten my advice as much as poss (you're right, it was overwhelming: I find image policy confusing just to think about let alone explain!!). If you think it's still too much please do chip away but ideally without removing friendliness :) Thanks again... Loriski (talk) 02:11, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi David, thanks for suggesting that I make a wikipedia account :) I had some old edits associated with my IP address and they didn't carry over to my new account. Is there a way I can include them?

AFT5 newsletter

Hey again all :). So, some big news, some small news, some good news, some bad news!

On the "big news" front; we've now deployed AFT5 on to 10 percent of articles, This is pretty awesome :). On the "bad news", however, it looks like we're having to stop at 10 percent until around September - there are scaling issues that make it dangerous to deploy wider. Happily, our awesome features engineering team is looking into them as we speak, and I'm optimistic that the issues will be resolved.

For both "small" and "good" news; we've got another office hours session. This one is tomorrow, at 22:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect - I appreciate it's a bit late for Europeans, but I wanted to juggle it so US east coasters could attend if they wanted :). Hope to see you all there!

Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

I hope to see a lot of you there; it's going to be a big day for everyone involved, I think :). I'll have more notes after the deployment! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 20:14, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right.

It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 00:09, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Question from 3 Speaker High

Hello David,

First, thank you for responding to my query. Second, I'm new to Wiki so I'm not even sure this message will be posted as I couldn't find a "reply" button. Third, the wiki article I'm writing is about a band that I follow. I contacted the band's rep and was given permission to write the article. I didn't want to get sued so I made sure I got permission prior to attempting to write this article. However, your note indicated that it was an advertisement. It's not my intention to make it sound like an ad. I have more information to write but after the speed deletion thing, I had to revamp the language. I also don't know how to give "credit" to articles written about the band. For example if Rolling Stones Magazine said "they were awesome" then how do I relay that on here?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I tried to "youtube" it but the articles are limited and doesn't explain these parts.

Thank you once again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 3 Speaker High (talkcontribs) 17:05, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Well first things first. You put the message in the right place, but just a tip: the "New section" button at the top is the best way to add a message. Don't worry, you didn't do anything wrong though!
Your article was deleted for two reasons: first, it was a copyvio of a magazine article—if you want to write an article, it must be your own words. You can't copy-paste from other sources, but you can cite them (see a beginner's guide). On a related note, a subject must be notable, i.e. they must have multiple third-party reliable sources write about them. Second, Wikipedia articles must be written from a neutral point of view. This means no promotional language.
Does that answer your questions? David1217 What I've done 18:46, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Another thank you :)

Thank you for your help here [2] :) Loriski (talk) 08:40, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Response re deletion of smiths detection draft page

Hello David1217,

This is my first time using wikipedia so my apologies if the first draft of this page fell short of the required standard. It is not my intention to create an advertisement for Smiths Detection merely to create an entry that explains as fully as I can what the company does (without replicating what is already on their company website) and include appropriate contact details for interested parties - bearing in mind the global scope of their operations. Would you be so kind as to provide some pointers regarding the specific areas of the page that you felt were inappropriate?

Many thanks for any help or advice you are able to provide!

Stujamjen

P.S. After reading your original message, when I clicked on the "contest this deletion" link it brought up an error page is this normal? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stujamjen (talkcontribs) 13:50, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

You need to show that your company has gotten multiple outside reliable sources to write about it—this is called notability. You also need to write articles from a neutral point of view, which means no promotional language. The article wizard is a helpful step-by-step guide to creating an article. Also, the error page you brought up is not normal—what did it look like? Anyways, happy editing! David1217 What I've done 16:13, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi David , how do i publish my biography and profile.?

You probably should not write about subjects with which you have a conflict of interest; this includes your biography. Nomination for the deletion of a page

Hi David, thanks for your help on the Eternal Eden page. I would like to nominate the article for deletion in Articles for Deletion. My rationale is that it fails to meet the General Notability Guideline and does not have enough sufficient coverage in its sources. Of the sources, three are from the game creator's website, two are trivial mentions that do not really provide any coverage on the game, and two of the "reviews" (the Game Tunnel review and the Aussie Nintendo review) are no longer online and just redirect to a "page not found" error. The last two sources are from the same website (RPGFan) which I don't see listed in WP:VG/S. 124.181.127.71 (talk) 17:32, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

All right then; I'll use your exact rationale. I'm guessing you can't do the nomination yourself because IPs can't create pages in "Wikipedia:" space? David1217 What I've done 17:35, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
  • Yes, that's correct. I don't really do much editing on Wikipedia and didn't think it would be worth the time to register an account just to do this, but I felt I should point it out anyway. Thanks again for the help. 124.181.127.71
It's now up: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Eternal Eden. Happy editing! David1217 What I've done 17:41, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

One question added after your vote

Thanks much for voting. When we put the RfC together, one thing we were all agreed on was that it should run a week, so that it didn't take too much time away from more central questions ... but we decided not to put that in the RfC, I think because we didn't want to force a cutoff in the middle of a good debate. At this point, I've added that question, if you'd like to vote on that one too. - Dank (push to talk) 13:39, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Submitting an article

Hi, I have recently created a new tiny search engine and i want to submit an article regarding it to Wikipedia. How could i do that? Can i do it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gowthamgutha (talkcontribs) 19:34, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

You are discouraged (but not banned) from creating articles on subjects where you have a conflict of interest. If you really want to write an article though, make sure it has significant (i.e. several news articles or the like) coverage in reliable sources (newspapers, books, magazines, etc.) to ensure it meets Wikipedia's standards of notability. Articles must also have a neutral point of view; this means no promotion of your company. Catch all that? And to actually get started on your article, visit the article wizard.
