The {{lang-ar}} markup is based on language. Use of the Arabic script also doesn't necessarily equate with a peninsular Arab origin. Maya (given name) is actually an ancient Persian name, which, like Somali, Turkish, Urdu and various other non-Arabic languages, uses/has used the Arabic script for transcription. This is why the lang-ar markup is also used for Maghreben names, even though many of these given and surnames are actually of Berber origin.
