Mockingjay

Hello, your Aug 31 edit to Mockingjay added a ref named "interview" but did not actually include the source. Please revisit the article and add the source intended. Thanks! - Salamurai (talk) 02:31, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

GOCE drive has begun

Hello, I just wanted to take a moment and announce that the September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive has started, and will run for a month. Thanks for signing up. There's a special prize for most edits on the first day, in case you've got high ambitions. --Diannaa (Talk) 02:36, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time to assess Paranormalcy. -- James26 (talk) 22:36, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

No problem. Feel free to contact me if you need any help. I'll make some changes and reasses when it's a B-class. Derild4921 22:53, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
I appreciate that. I've noticed that many video game and movie articles have a "Release" section, which chronicles more than just critical reception, so I thought it was time to add that to a new book article. I may expand the "Reception" section as more feedback appears. Other than that, is there anything you'd add right now if you were working on it? -- James26 (talk) 05:13, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
I always try and add a themes section. That would have to come from reviews, but critics might not write what themes there are. Also, publication history which just tells about the release dates for other editions and in other languages. For example, I usually have a paragraph for the release dates as a hardcover, paperback, e-book and audiobook(if it applies), American release dates, Uk, Canada and Austrlia release dates. Then I have a subsection for the foreign translations and two more subsection for sales and audiobook. However, I realize not all books can have all much information so just apply what you can!. Derild4921 13:33, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
Indeed. As this one just came out last week, it's sort of only getting started. But I may keep watch on the things you mentioned. Thanks. -- James26 (talk) 21:12, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Amor Mío (Eddie Dee album)

The artist appears to be a straight up {{db-band}}; I've looked all over and can't find a single source on the guy. Since he seems deleteable per A7, the albums can then be speedied via A9. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 18:47, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Fading Echoes

You seem to be good at finding refs. Maybe you could find some for Fading Echoes? Brambleclawx 19:24, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

The newer books in the Warriors series seems to have less reviews and refs for anything. The best usually is a review from barnes and noble, but for the more recent omen of the stars books this even seems to fail. The best I could find for this happened to be on the blacklist. I'll search around some more. Usually I just search "book title" review or themes in "book title". Derild4921 20:10, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
This is the best I found. Derild4921 20:12, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Your AfD nomination for Lenny Platt

Hi, I already redirected the article name because of notability issues. I redirected to a cast list for the series. A speedy deletion nomination probably would have sufficed. Jarkeld (talk) 00:14, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm still trying to get the border between CSD and AFD down...Derild4921 00:18, 4 September 2010 (UTC)
It's not very clear sometimes, hence my use of the word probably. When in doubt: use a PROD or AfD. Jarkeld (talk) 00:28, 4 September 2010 (UTC)

Atilla Engin

Hello Derild, nice meeting you. You placed a "refimproveBLP" tag to Atilla Engin's article on 18:22, August 9 2010 but since then, almost a month later, that very article's biography section, (I believe,) improved a lot with significant references and the sources attributed to them. Would you please revisit the article and see, whether the refimproveBLP tag needs to stay any further. Atilla Engin

I'll greatly appreciate that.

Even today, I added two more references, one from "Library Denmark" and the other one from "National Library Of Denmark and Aarhus University Libraries" (Ref # 3 and 4)

Thanks Derild the Violin.:-)

Sincerely best, Fusion is the future (talk) 17:24, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi Derild, I noticed an edit you made here. Please don't use Advisor's dash fixing function, as it contradicts the MOS (specifically MOS:DASH) when fixing em dashes (it's fine with en dashes). Try using User:GregU/dashes.js to fix dashes instead. Thanks, Airplaneman 18:55, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi

Just a question, on your userpage it says "I live somewhere in the US I won't tell where :p" but you're in the categories Wikipedians in Louisiana and Wikipedians in New Jersey, thus I am assuming that you live in this city and state, I'm just observant -.- I don't mean for the question to be an invasion of privacy answer if you wish. Well...I was born in Louisiana and now live in New Jersey. I should change that statement. Derild4921 13:07, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I should be able to got on then. I'll still be on a lot on next summer no matter what. Also, I'm nominating Seekers (novel series) for GA today, but I won't be able to get on after today so can you just fix any problems brought up? Of course, I don't know when it will be reviewed so I might be able to do most of it myself. Thanks! Derild4921 17:34, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

I really want to ask the Erins if they ever read the Wikipedia pages... I've gone through the chat (took an hour to skim), and it looks pretty good. We get confirmation for OOTS5 (the forgotten warrior) and cancellation of Allegiances of the Clans. It's pretty fun to read. Apparently, Vicky like the Old Spice commercials. move

Hi I'm proposing a move to a contentious title of diaoyu/senkaku islands. Please come to take a look: (Discuss)Senkaku IslandsPinnacle Islands — A recent discussion about the controversial use of Japanese name over a controversial land seems to suggest that neither Senkaku and Diaoyu is predominate common name. Search results show that both names are common, in which the Japanese one yields more results in Google Book search, while the Chinese name yields more in Google News and General Google search. The title was hence moved to Pinnacle Islands following the example of Liancourt Rocks and Sea of Japan, which neglects who administrate and controls the place, but pick up a neutral generally known name. In this case, although the name Pinnacle Islands does not seem to be predominately popular than the rest of two, it achieves the highest degree of neutrality required by wp:name. An admin (nihonjoe) and I have moved the page to Pinnacle Islands for neutrality, but the move is disputed by a user. --Winstonlighter (talk) 05:25, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

GOCE newsletter

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36.

Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated.

Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies.

Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on.

Atilla Engin

  • Brought in from talk page archive 3
  • Dear Derild, I need your help and guidance.

The article Atilla Engin received a new warning of multiple issues which I'm having hard time to understand. I made significant contributions to it while I tried to keep both, the neutral point of view and the integrity of the article in tact. If asked, I can explain what I did and why I did. I would like you to visit the article and see if there is anything I did inappropriate. Would you please do that? Sincerely best. Fusion is the future (talk) 13:49, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Well, a copyedit to clean up grammar is neccassary which I will do in time. I will also try to clean up the tone and POV of the article. There are a few weird tone areas such as the very last line "most importantly, destroyed thousands of innocent lives. Art, theater and music could not survive neither. Recovery and healing process took some years." It's important, but not necassary for an article to emphasize this. Derild4921 18:59, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
Thank you Derild, I'll appreciate your input. Sincerely best. Fusion is the future (talk) 20:14, 17 September 2010 (UTC)
  • Dear Derild, thank you for copyediting. Two things I would like to point out:

1- The only group the artist had on his own name was Atilla Engin Group and he made 5 albums with this band. But now, it's not there anymore after the copyedit. He had two important groups in Denmark, namely MATAO and Atilla Engin Group. Is it possible to insert Atilla Engin Group back? After the copyedit, (in the beginning of the biography) the sentence goes such as:

"He formed several groups, including Matao[2][3]where (which???) he released his first album Turkish Delight."

Can we replace it with this:

He formed several groups, including Matao[2][3]where (which???) he released his first album Turkish Delight[4][5] and Atilla Engin Group which had five albums behind.[6] <--- Ref.#6

2- TAL VADYA UTSAV Festival in India. I can see that the names of Zakir Hussain, Babatunde Olatunji, Peter Giger and Trilok Gurtu are now excluded. In the reference#[11] from New Delhi concerts, you can see Babatunde Olatunji's name in the list along with Family Of Percussion (which was Peter Giger's group.) In terms of Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu, Atilla Engin has provided the only picture he has (could be found in Wikipedia Commons) depicting those artists at the stage from Bombay concert in 1985 (Tal Vatya Udsav). The two-weeks-long festival took place in three major cities, Bombay, Bengalore and New Delhi. One hundred and twenty five world artists participated.

Question #1: Could you (I) include these names?

Question #2: If so, could I give a link to this very photo, depicting all of these artists at stage at the last concert in Bombay in 1985? Tal Vatya Udsav

Again, I do appreciate a lot your kind help and guidance Derild. Could I then remove these tags now, since you completed the copyedit? Sincerely best.Fusion is the future (talk) 18:35, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

      • Dear Derild, I NEED your help, URGENTLY. Please. A user called Pablo X's messing up with everything, I mean everything. Destroying my edits, the integrity of the article.

Please help. Fusion is the future (talk) 18:58, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

I understand your concern, but the user is merely following the Wikipedia style manual. As an editor if Wikipedia, you have to expect others to edit an article you are. If you feel troubled by the edits, talk on the talk page of the article. I'll try to help, but school is starting to much busier now. Derild4921 13:35, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Atilla Engin; your copyedit

I have removed the {{goceinuse}} template from the article as there didn't seem to be any active editing going on. Some more is still needed though!  pablo 11:31, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll try but I'm on Wikibreak for school. I might help a bit on the weekends though. Derild4921 13:31, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Hey

While I am not trying to canvass support or against either way (even though I voted Support), I want to clarify something about the poll. The trial IS over, yes, but the question is should it be switched off before the release of the new software on or around November 9? This is by no means an extension of the trial, this is a what to do in the meantime, so your comment about it being an extended trial isn't really relevant. A new trial will begin with the new release in November.

Again, if based on this clarification you still say Close, then that is your vote. I just wanted to clarify as the comment did not seem to take the point of the poll into consideration. =) CycloneGU (talk) 19:39, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I have retracted my vote and now stand neutral. Thanks for the clarification! Derild4921 21:40, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Nice work

I was away all weekend, and was very impressed by the stuff you did over the weekend (expanding Erin Hunter, creating, Crookedstar's Promise, etc.) For Crookedstar's Promise, try to make sure you re-read what you type (i found quite a few typos), and remember that readers may not necessarily know what you are talking about when you mention "Vicky". Keep up the good work, Brambleclawx 01:26, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! For Crookedstar's Promise I was at the library where they only have IE which doesn't have a spell checker. Here at home I have Firefox which I have accustomed to the spell check. Again, thanks! Derild4921 01:36, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
Ah, is that why everyone loves firefox? It has a spell checker? That'd be useful for me too, except it wouldn't recognise any warrior names. Brambleclawx 01:38, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
I just prefer FF for that and I can close any tab as long as there isn't more than about 8 open at the same time. For warrior's names I separate it into the two words it's made up of (Leopardstar -> Leopard star) and see if I misspelled anything. Derild4921 01:41, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
There's always the "add to dictionary" function (I think - at least there is for me) Airplaneman 02:56, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
I sometimes use that, but I don't care much as the only red I get is from user names and fictional name which bother me much in articles. Derild4921 03:05, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Barnstars
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, you may have earned rollover words, which counted towards this month's barnstars (except for the leaderboard awards). Any unused word credits will be held over for the next drive, as long as you participated in the September drive. Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. Click here to see a list of barnstar winners.

  • We will be holding our next drive in November. You can sign up here.

A huge "thank you" to all editors who helped clear the backlog and to others who helped out behind-the-scenes. See you at the next drive, and until then, please continue to help us work through the backlog. Happy editing!

This edit [3] and your subsequent templating of the IP violate WP:BITE - the IP was making a good faith attempt to mention the comic was now being continued at the garfield website. Exxolon (talk) 14:34, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

sorry, when I saw the title US Acres I thought it was a part of the government and the link was a spam link. Derild4921 16:32, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

I would give it a try at FA, you have exhausted all that I know, and no one else seems to be responding. Beware, though, they are a bit harsher than most GA reviewers, so be ready for nitpickiness! But I would give it a go, Sadads (talk) 00:58, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

(butting in) - Derild, I have serious concerns about the sources in the article and am afraid it won't get beyond a source review. That's why I left the information from the New York Times articles that I found. WP:WIAFA requires "high quality" reliable sources. A reliable source at GA is not necessarily a reliable source at FAC. I saw Awadewit working on the article - has she given you her opinion yet? Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:22, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
<ec>Sadly, the only sources that are highly reliable are some reviews and interview (if that counts at all). The series just isn't as popular as some others and the author chats are one of the best sources for information for the Warriors articles. Awadewit was working on it, but hasn't given an opinion yet; she seems to be very busy at the moment. Derild4921 01:27, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Just as a side comment Derild, if the series were ever made into a movie, there would no end to the pool of reliable sources. Not that I'm trying to discourage you from working towards FA right now. Keep up the good work. I'll try to help out if you need, but I'm quite busy these days. Brambleclawx 01:29, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
That I know :). I've been waiting for The Seems movie to come out to get some sources. Derild4921 01:32, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
(ec)Yes, she is extremely busy. The simple problem is that often high quality sources don't exist, and then GA is as far as you can get. I've run into the same problem on many articles, that I leave at B or maybe work to bring up to GA. To be honest, if I were reviewing at FAC, I'd question the sources. That said, it seems to be a popular series and maybe more sources will pop up with time. I also haven't yet run a full database search for you b/c I just haven't had the time. Do you have access to any kind of databases through school or your library? Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:33, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
I do but they don't come up with much. Sadads was able to get one source from Washington Post (which I forgot about and need to add in). Derild4921 01:36, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Also, would such an interview count as highly reliable? I could substitute in for some sources in author chats. Derild4921 01:38, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that's much better. I know I keep telling you this: but ping me again in a week or two. I currently have an article at FAC so I'm a little busy, as usual (!), but I'll give you a full source review, either here or on the article talkpage. Another trick would be to add a "Genres" section, and then you could find lots of high quality sources about children's/juvenile literature and animals. I'd be more than happy to help you with that, but am a bit preoccupied at the moment. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:42, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

I've added a Genre section already, but I'm not sure on what should be added. Just information what genre the book is or information on the type of genre. I'll go around to some other FA article with a genre section and see what to add. I've seen the FA for a while now, I even have it watchlisted! Good luck! Derild4921 01:46, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

I remember an interview with Victoria Holmes about the genre and something about the market. I'll look for it and see what I can get. Derild4921 01:50, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Irish Thoroughbred is FA with a genres section. I'll review your genres section as well - it will be a little difficult, but you might want to summarize the genre of anthropormorphized (sorry about the spelling!) animals in children's lit. It's a well developed genre and I can help find information for you or even help develop the section a bit. As you've seen, my bad eyes (and not quite healed eyes) are keeping me busy at FAC. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 01:55, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll start that tomorrow or sometime this week! Derild4921 02:00, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Just to be clear - no articles are prohibited from coming to FAC. If the only sources you can find are newspaper articles, that is fine. That means that the "high-quality" sources for this article at this time are just all that great. Hopefully that will improve in the future. That criteria is in there so that reviewers can demand that articles use the best sources when a range exist. Awadewit (talk) 20:26, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Ok, I've started looking for some interviews which I've added into my sandbox. I'll take out any information can. Derild4921 20:28, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

I reviewed and passed this article to GA some time ago. However, I notice new material has been added and IMO the article should go to Reassessment before heading for FAC. Some prose needs attention. Here are just a few examples from the first paragraph of Genres and Themes:

  • HarperCollins originally requested that Holmes write a "fantasy story on feral cats". (Why is a portion in qmarks? 'HarperCollins asked Holmes to write a fantasy novel about feral cats' is adequate. This paragraph is liberally sprinkled with qmarks, making the prose slow-going.)
  • Holmes also added in human themes and issues into the book such as "war, politics, revenge, doomed love, religious conflict". (Added in and into are awkward. Again, why the qmarks?)
  • An interviewer has described the plot as "Shakespearian: a mad leader, intra-clan betrayal, war, star-crossed lovers, death". (Again, more qmarks. Why?)
  • Reviews have also called the story an "animal adventure". (Again, more qmarks. Reviews or Reviewers? Drop also.)
  • Being an animal adventure, the book has also commonly been compared to the Redwall series which follows mice instead of cats. (Animal adventure is repeated within a few key strokes. 'Also' is sprinkled liberally throughout the article. It's not necessary. "...the book has been compared to..." is just fine.)
  • The pen name Erin Hunter was also chosen in order to be shelved close to the series. (A pen name has nothing to do with Genres or Themes and belongs elsewhere in the article. Perhaps a section called Marketing.)

These are just a few concerns I have with the prose. I suggest either a Reassessment or a copy editor be allowed to touch up the prose before the article is sent to FAC. Susanne2009NYC (talk) 20:21, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

I understand the prose issues; I asked for a copyeditor GOCE previously prior to the reexpansion. All the qmarks are since they are all quotes. Derild4921 21:40, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
