Greetings from a Dukie to be
[edit]Hello there! QuizQuick 22:12, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Hey
[edit]Hey Dr. G! Help Duke University to become a featured article. See Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Duke University. Please help me, as nobody else is. I have been a pathetic the last few weeks completely revamping the page. Although I didn't nominate it for FA,QuizQuick did, so I was surprised about that. See University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Cornell University for currently featured university articles. Cornell just passed today. Also, I deleted the military people. I didn't mean to offend or be "anti-military," but as seen from other university pages, the names included in these types of sections are clearly recognizable/famous on the main page (except for business people, but their companies are clearly notable.) Another paragraph wasn't necessary. If other people think it's appropriate to add Admiral Frank Bowman and General Walter Boomer to the same paragraph as the politicans, I wouldn't object. Although people (or their companies) should have their own article before being added, so the other three definitely should not be included. And it appears that you just added one of those names, while the other was added three days ago...Not that that necessarily means non-notable, just not sure if famous enough to be on main Duke page.-Bluedog423 23:08, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Frank Bowman
[edit]Oh yeah, I did mess up the rank thing, good catch. Keep up the great work! Merveilleux 02:33, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Thank You
[edit]First of all, I want to thank you for recognizing my contributions to Wikipedia. Second, you're welcome (for the welcome posted above). I am always glad to welcome newcomers and try to help in any way possible. I hope to see you around more often and I hope you have a good day. --WillMak050389 03:39, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks again, for the barnstar. I appreciate your kindness towards me and this is what I smile at when I look at peoples' pages. I do plan on looking at your contributions in the future and I may award you also. (also, there is a section on the barnstar where you can put a message, feel free to leave one if you wish.) --WillMak050389 04:58, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
- You put it in the right place and I allow anyone to edit my page in a constructive manner, plus, if you wanted to, you could remove all the stuff about me not having a Barnstar because it isn't true anymore. --WillMak050389 05:33, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Fair use RfC
[edit]This came up on my watchlist. Thanks for your kind words! I didn't know a Seabee could say such nice things (much less speak english!) All the best, --Durin 22:56, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Durham, NC
[edit]Thanks for the compliments. I didn't remove the Town Twinning section because I don't know much about it. Is it related in any way to Sister Cities? It's also cool that you have studied Russian. --GoOdCoNtEnT 02:37, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, it meant to go to the Talk page. Merge the two sections (Town Twinnings + Sister Cities). I live in Chapel Hill, NC near Durham, NC. --GoOdCoNtEnT 02:58, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for clarification
[edit]Thanks for the compliments on the Duke article! Also, thanks for clarifying my "Pratt" confusion. I guess I just didn't believe the whole name was included in the official title because it seems to be used so sparingly. I figured it would at least be on ID cards or on the main Pratt website. Perhaps I should move Pratt School of Engineering back to Edmund T. Pratt Jr. School of Engineering... -Bluedog423 05:00, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Signature
[edit]Greetings - I really liked your signature, and borrowed some of the structure for a wiki I am on (I'm not nearly significant enough here to sign with anything grand). Two things I noticed, though, were that the box doesn't close and that the whole thing links to talk pages. Your current sig is:
Did you mean to have something more like:
For what it's worth, mine on the other site is now:
I hope you don't mind! Once we get interwiki links working I will definite post a thanks there. Here's the thanks here - THANKS! DukeEgr93 04:54, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hello! Many thanks for your kind words regarding my signature. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, etc! Thank you for pointing out how to close the box. It only appears broken on IE; Firefox shows the sig as complete. I changed my sig to point solely towards my Talk page as it was too big otherwise. My reasoning was that most people clicking on it would want to communicate with me rather than see my userboxes and this then cut the code down to <240 characters. Large signatures, as mine used to be, cause problems when people read the code of Wiki pages. Other help and kind comments about my signature can be found at:
I really should switch to just FF, but am currently using a borrowed computer. And I have read some (but not all) of the discussions here about signature lengths. The good thing about the other wiki (Duiki) is, as the only faculty member posting there, none of the students is going to complain too much about my signature length...yet ;) Quick IE note - now there's one too many spaces on the right side of the talk box. Not sure if it is the same in FF... - DukeEgr93 07:10, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, those non-W3C-HTML-standard-browser renderings of HTML! Fix it in Firefox and it breaks in IE! I'm forever tinkering with it, I will go and do some more presently :-). Regards, (aeropagitica) (talk)
- IE and Firefox incompatibilities are quite annoying. Demonblade (talk) 05:42, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- Gotta say - with a user name like Demonblade - I kinda expect the signature to be a bit more...dynamic? Like, maybe -
Demonblade ? DukeEgr93 04:44, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- Which is not to say (aeropagitica) isn't dynamic as a name or as an editor! Just...different? (have I hit rock bottom and hauled out a pickaxe?) DukeEgr93 04:49, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- No insult taken from your comments! Let's confine sig development to the signatory's Talk page, though. Regards, (aeropagitica) (talk) 04:52, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- oooooh, nice signature. I might make use of that. Definetly cool. Demonblade(talk) 09:29, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- Alright changed. thanks alot. I'm not that familiar with wikipedia formatting. JustHTML. Hey did you read that wiki formatting is being considered as an computer language like C++? Demonblade 09:30, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
Border
[edit]Yah, of course you can use the border I created. No problem. I know about Duiki since Andrew asked me to be a sysop as seen in my Archive. I decided, however, that I have spent far too much time on wikipedia, and didn't want to "waste" anymore (especially since those Pratt courses will be starting up again soon), so I declined. -Bluedog423 04:13, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- Also, the link to my userpage doesn't work because you capitalized the "d" in dog.-Bluedog423 04:23, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
Barn stars
[edit]Can anyone give a barnstar? If so I'm going to give you a barnstar. How do you give someone a barnstar? Demonblade 09:15, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
The Graphic Designer's Barnstar | ||
I award you the barnstar for making my awsome signature, alot better than my monotonous blue one. :D thanks. Demonblade 03:17, 20 August 2006 (UTC) |
Signature
[edit]It's perfectly fine for you to use my sig structure for your signature. It's really not anything special, and a lot of people have them similiar to mine. Thanks for the courteous heads up! --WillMak050389 04:44, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Vandalism
[edit]You can not personally "punish" vandals, except for warn them on their talk pages with {{test}}, {{bv}}, and such, though to get an admin's attention you can post it at WP:AIAV, which is best for IPvandals who have been repeatedly warned yet haven't stopped. I find this as the most effective method. Hope this helps! --WillMak050389 21:35, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- haha, I scanned it backwards and didn't want to flip it,you know, to be weird. Only like two other people have noticed though... --WillMak050389 03:52, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Eliminating 'playground' terms
[edit]I see where you are doing some editing in that area ... Good Luck, as parts of it will be restored (if history holds) very quickly by unc fans. If they insist on keeping their silly nicknames in articles, then I will insist on the other items being kept in them, too. Duke53 | Talk 00:55, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- Now do you see what I was getting at? 'Nobody' really cares if it is in there, but they immediately run to restore it when it is not there. :) Cute. Duke53 | Talk 18:03, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- You might wish to include the above user in the 'mediation'. Dubc0724 18:15, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
Response
[edit]I read your message: "I am trying to keep the information on Wikipedia with respect to UNC and Duke encyclopedic and not inflammatory. I would appreciate your help in achieving this goal by, for example, not creating redirects or web pages whose only nature serves to insult or attack one of the schools. Please let me know if you think this might be achievable. If you look at my contributions, you will see what I have done in this regard."
I am also for making this a better encyclopedia and for keeping the articles non-inflamatory, but I was unsure what you are referring to. I assume it was to delete the explination of the nickname Dook for Duke University on the redirect for Dook.
Just to let you know, I have no strong feelings about including the nicknames one way or the other. My general feeling is that the information should be included since people looking for an explination of the nickname should be able to find one (e.g., see the links for Slick Willy or Tricky Dick), but I don't want to get into a big fight over it. I do think that we should probably get the interested parties involved and discuss this issue on some page possibly with a mediator and come to some sort of resolution because it seems as if several editors have diametrically opposing viewpoints on the matter. In addition, once the matter has been fully discussed and decided we can point out to future editors that the matter has already been decided. Remember 14:06, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- Looks like you already beat me to the punch by setting up a mediation yourself. Thanks for doing that. I think that is probably the best way to get a resolution to the issue that everyone will agree to and abide by. Remember 14:12, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
UNC/Duke
[edit]- FYI I posted the following at User talk:Remember as well.
- Duke, if I recall correctly, Remember created the UNJD redirect at my request, because I didn't know how to do it myself. If anyone is to get blamed for inflammatory comments regarding Duke, please leave Remember out of it, as I haven't seen any evidence of inflammatory conduct coming from this user. Thanks Dubc0724 15:09, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

- List of entertainers by nickname
- List of hockey nicknames
- List of monarchs by nickname
- List of nicknames of historical personages
- List of nicknames used by George W. Bush
- List of nicknames used in cricket

Thanks
[edit]Thanks for the update on the nicknames issue. They should be deleted IMO. In reference to someone citing google hits as evidence, you should point him to Wikipedia:Search_engine_test... I did not realize Wikipedia had a mediation protocol. It surprises me all the time! I don't really want to spend time on the mediation though, so good luck! -Bluedog423Talk 01:24, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- "Further judgment: the Google test checks popular usage, not correctness. For example, a search for the incorrect Charles Windsor gives 10 times more results than the correct Charles Mountbatten-Windsor."
- Just to clarify... Establishing popular usage was the exact reason for searching for pages including "Dook" or better "Dook" and "Duke". While I've agreed to drop the issue, the fact that "Dook" is a popular (even if juvenile and mildly offensive) nickname for Duke Univ. is undisputed. Thanks for your time.
