Template

O.K. now that I have copied the code what else do I have to do to {{ChicagoWikiProject}}? Is it possible to add a photo needed parameter? TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio)

I just created a whole bunch of categoreies to go with the template parameterization. I think I will be satisfied with a separate photo request tag for now since I don't understand the code. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 17:20, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

It seems that all subcats of Category:Chicago articles by quality are working. The various sub categories of Category:Chicago articles by importance are populating except for Category:Unknown-importance Chicago articles. I will probably only be online for another 20 minutes before I head to the gym. I will be on a bit tomorrow. I am going to try to figure this out from {{Architecture}}. It may take me some time. I would, for example, like to be able to tag all the categories at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Categories or the templates at Category:Chicago templates with a class parameter. Category:Disambig-Class_Chicago_articles, Category:Category-Class Chicago articles and Category: Template-Class Chicago articles are all working with the parameters. I am having a minor problem with the Category:Disambig-Class_Chicago_articles getting them to put themselves in the proper categories though. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 17:26, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

I am wondering if a partial reactivation of Category:Chicago articles with comments is possible so that pages with comments still show up in this category, but so that the template does not show comments. TonyTheTiger (talk/cont/bio) 23:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

I apologize if I was unclear. Having the comments show up on the talk page template is undesirable. Please revert this change. What I hope for is that the category Category:Chicago articles with comments can populate for pages with comments without the comments showing up on talk pages. This is so that we can easily figure out which pages have comments even though we don't want them showing up on talk pages. The problem with Category:Disambig-Class_Chicago_articles is that the Parent Disamb-Class has no other subcats or articles. I am trying to figure out if it is malnamed or something. Hi Elkman, thanks for all your help with the 1013 Project articles. My students are learning a lot from their interaction with Wikipedians. They're starting to get the hang of this, and they seem to be enjoying themselves. Stoopid Monkey Logos

As you are probably aware, the Stoop!d Monkey page was the subject of an AfD and the result was, of course, "Keep". Currently, the logos are a point of contention with myself saying that they were part of the "Keep", while User:Calton saying they were to be dropped and the article was to remain.

I asked the admin who closed the AfD his opinion and he replied, "I just said the article was to be kept, I don't know about the logos". There wasn't a decision given on the logos and in the AfD only 3 users said the logos should go, only 1 said keep the article, lose the logos.

I am not sure how to handle this, but since the admin who closed the AfD made no decision and the AfD wasn't about the logos in the first place (and the majority said to keep the logos if you want to be picky about it, as far as I can tell).

This wasn't an issue from April 16th (immediately after the AfD) to May 3rd when User:Calton realized that I was blocked for 48hours (not related to this) and I couldn't revert his changes. User:Calton had no interest and made no changes on the page itself or the talk page during that time. So, to me, his initial revert on May 3rd was done because of my block.

I have asked two admins (in case one is offline) to revert his changes and put a block on the page until this can be worked out. I am also asking you, since you contributed to the AfD, what your opinion is on just the logos themselves. I appericate you input one way or the other. Thanks...SVRTVDude ^(VT)

Red River Trails

Elkman: I included the NRHP infobox in this article, and somewhat arbitrarily chose Winnipeg as the closest city. Should a city be chosen which is closer to the two parts of the trail selected for the MPS? Or should multiple cities be listed? It may make sense to list none at all, given the fact that some cart trains started from Pembina instead of Winnipeg, some ended at Traverse des Sioux, Mendota, or Fort Snelling rather than St. Paul, and they wandered all over the map between the endpoints. I edited the history section some-- take a look at it. I'm tempted to take out the first mention of Minneapolis growing up along St. Anthony Falls as it's covered later. • Hmm. I think I'd rather keep the section of the foundation of Minneapolis in with the history section. I know it's covered later, in the industry and commerce section, but I think it's important to have it in the historical perspective. Actually, come to think of it, the industry and commerce section says that fur trading and agriculture were the first industries, and it sort of segues into flour milling, but it doesn't say much about lumbering and sawmilling. Those were pretty important industries at St. Anthony Falls, coming into prevalence before flour milling really took stride. I think the primary mention of Minneapolis growing up around the falls should be mentioned in the history section, and then the industry section should say that sawmilling and then flour milling were important industries at the falls. (And elsewhere, too. Marine on St. Croix, Stillwater, and Winona were pretty busy in the lumber trade. I'd have to see if any towns up the Mississippi River from the Twin Cities were that important.) I agree with you, but I wasn't clear. It is mentioned twice in history, once in the second paragraph following the first mention of Fort Snelling, and later in the fourth paragraph of the history section. But it's only one phrase in each, and I think it reads OK. (I'm always looking for a way to condense.) Kablammo 03:32, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Ah, I get it. I think the fourth paragraph doesn't mention Minneapolis growing up around the falls so much as it mentions that industry at the falls changed from sawmilling to flour milling. Come to think of it, in regard to my earlier message, the history section mentions the lumber trade in Marine on St. Croix, Stillwater, and Winona, while the industry section doesn't mention it. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 04:04, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

I changed one of your redirects back. I didn't change it because I am so sure it is more preferable my way, but because we should be consistent. When we get to the WP:FLC, I would not be surprised if we end up reverting to your change, but also changing many other links similarly. Someone's considering me for an RFA

Snowolf is considering nominating me for an RFA. Since you've been helpful to me in the past, particularly in regard to a couple of editing conflicts, I'd like to get your opinion on whether these conflicts would cause a problem. I haven't had any major conflicts with users since last November (although I did have a bit of a dustup recently with Kelly Martin regarding her high standards for RFAs), but I'm wondering if you think any of these past problems are insurmountable. Hi Elkman!

Thanks for your note. Regarding your RFA, I say you should go for it. I'd support you based on your 11k contributions, mostly to geography-related efforts, and you've kept your nose clean for six months, aside from what does appear to be a small scuffle with Kelly Martin. I don't think a scuffle with Kelly Martin is an "insurmountable" obstacle at RFA, though Kelly does have important friends here on Wikipedia.

What it comes down to for me is I would trust you with the tools, as you've done a lot of great work, and I like your sense of humor (the Antarctica Highways WikiProject userbox, for example). Admins need a sense of humor; so many don't. You had a block 6 months ago for disturbance, which the blocking admin obviously struggled with ("Looks like a good user having a bad day"). The incident seems well behind you, and you're a productive member of the community. I'm not sure I can gauge consensus of the community without any relevant comments; I'm afraid I don't move in the "right" circles for that. Also be aware that probably the only RFA that I can be certain benefited from my support was that of Kpjas. If you do decide to run, please let me know. I happened to notice this while perusing Snowolf's recent noms - I think you should definitely go for it. I think most people realize that getting in dust-ups is a natural part of noticing and challenging things that you disagree with. I wouldn't stop working on Minnesota historical topics, or Minnesota-related articles in general, or NRHP articles in general. Those topics are too interesting to walk away from. I view adminship as an extra set of tools to help out with maintenance, not as a replacement for article editing. Chicago Landmark Stubification

I am writing you because you either (1) edited Chicago Landmark 5 weeks ago when it was the WP:CHICOTW (2) edited it or created a stub last week when we had the stubification drive for it or (3) you nominated an article to be the CHICOTW in the last few days.

I have finally had a chance to take a tally on last week’s stubification effort. Based on my manual count we now have 109 bluelinks on a total of 241 landmarks. Preliminary indications were that for our article to be successful at WP:FLC we would need to eventually rename it (something like List of Chicago Landmarks) and get the majority of the landmarks linked. Based on my cursory count we need to write 12 more articles to get to a majority. It would be great if you might be able to assist by creating a couple stubs to assist in this effort. Here are some of the stubs that were created during last week’s efforts: Black Metropolis-Bronzeville District, Historic Michigan Boulevard District, Arthur H. Compton House & One North LaSalle. Among the articles still redlinked are 2 buildings on this week’s CHICOTW, Magnificent Mile (Perkins, Fellows & Hamilton Office and Studio, Woman's Athletic Club). Recall that each redlink on Chicago Landmark has a footnote to a reference that gives you enough info to create a stub. If you create a new stub please add it to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chicago#Newly_Created_Chicago_Related_Pages so that we can keep track of the progress. Tulsa Historic Places

Elkman, thanks for the kind words on my talk page. I barely know what a talk page is at this point, but they came at a good time.

I'm so frustrated with this entire experience... I was a webmaster for 10 years before becoming an urban planner, and I've never come across a technical process that is less user-friendly than wikipedia. Half of our content gets deleted almost as soon as it's added, I have no idea why, the help documents are decidedly unhelpful... I'm about ready to quit the whole effort. All I was trying to do was add our content -- content that we own and willfully distribute to fulfill our mission.

Any help or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I got into a secret club by mistake and everyone's giving me grief for not knowing the secret handshake and sitting in someelse's chair.  :{

Mill Ruins Park, etc

(Firstly, thanks for the RfA Support) I see what you're saying about the photo. I can see exactly where he took it, but it will take me at least two weeks to take a new one --while I live downtown, next to Foshay, I work out in Eden Prairie and only have time to go on photo hunts on weekends (for daylight). I'm going to be out for the next few weekends. I didn't even know about that gorgeous home before, I'll see if I can't eventually capture that. My camera isn't particularly professional, and it's at the whim of the sunlight on a given day. Monte Ne

Hello, I'm needing some info or support for an article about a place listed on the National Register of Historic Places that I've been working on. It's a place called Monte Ne which was a health resort of sorts run by an eccentric bimetallisms named William Coin Harvey in the early twentieth century. Thanks, Elkman, for the notice about the hurry-up-and-delete tag. I found an article in Wiki that compared shopping cart software programs, so I added my cart to the list of shopping carts in the table. The carts were all hotlinks, but when you clicked on them, for the most part, you got a message that said ... "there is no such article, but you can log in or create an account and write one if you want". So I did!

Did I read the faq and learn everything I should have before penning the offensive missive? No. I did read the NPOV alert, but that was about it. It was meant to be (and was, I believe) a purely informative write-up. No selling. Anyway, I see the article I wrote has already been deleted. Very efficient! Thanks again. They're burning me out and pissing me off. The holier than thou attitude over there is ridculous to say the least. Apparently Wikipedia's 1,200 or so admins are saints, they must have zero flaws, especially considering some of the comments they made on my RfA. Whatever. I can guarantee that most of the admins on here don't have nearly the solid contribution history I do, after all how many articles about Pokemon can we really have or do we really need. Blah. Deerwood

I'd have to agree with you that Deerwood Auditorium doesn't possess all the elements of Federal architecture, such as a flat facade, but I think it took some cues from the period, such as symetrically placed, 16-light, double-hung windows and the elliptical-looking detail above. The faux gable reminds me of Greek Revival style, and the overall shape reminds me of the Alamo. It certainly is a unique structure; thanks for bringing it to my attention. I was researching a bit to try to re-word the DYK hook again and also the article, to remove the Peacock term. You probably already knew this, but I just learned that "Federal Relief Architecture" is anything built by the "Federal Relief Administration" which preceded the WPA. So, there isn't any particular architectural style associated with that term. The implication is that the Deerwood project is a fine example of a public building that would never have existed without federal money - really an icon of the program moreso than an icon of a building style. Schooner Adventure

Hi, Thank you for helping out with the Schooner Adventure wiki page. Quick question for you---on a Mac browser, everything looks good. However, testing it on a PC browser (IE), the text doesn't seem to wrap around the NHL box that you added on the right side. So there is a big gap between the first paragraph and the rest of the article. Strange. Any ideas on how to fix that?

pictures

As it turns out, I had a picture of the Crow Wing County Courthouse from last year, when I went up to Brainerd for an inline skate race. I have a couple other pictures from that trip, including the Northern Pacific Railroad shops in Brainerd, the Brainerd water tower, and the Crosby Soo Line Depot.

On this trip, I took pictures of Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake, the Spina Hotel in Ironton, the other two Cuyuna Iron Range Municipally-Owned Elevated Metal Water Tanks in Cuyuna and Trommald. On the way up, I took pictures of the Great Northern depot and the Robert C. Dunn house in Princeton, the Mille Lacs County Courthouse and the Milaca City Hall in Milaca. I also took some pictures in Aitkin, including the Aitkin County Courthouse, the Aitkin Carnegie Library, the Northern Pacific depot (a really nice looking structure), the Patrick Casey house, and the Potter/Casey building. I've uploaded the Portsmouth mine pictures as well as the three courthouse pictures -- they're in commons:Category:Courthouses of Minnesota.

I also got in some good diving, too (which was the actual reason for the trip). Unfortunately, I lost a weight pocket in Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake. I've been having troubles with those weight pockets, so I might have to replace that particular system. But that's another topic.

Let me know if you want me to upload the other pictures for those places, and I'll upload them. I'm not uploading them right now mainly because I don't have articles written yet, but I'm willing to upload them any time. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 18:25, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

WPChi falling on its face?

I hope you have been following along at Wikipedia:Featured_list_candidates#List_of_Chicago_Landmarks. If you have, then you may have noticed that the only drawback that seems to have emerged is the number of redlinks in the list. If you check in at WP:WIAFL this should not be a surprise. There is nothing much else really to complain about, IMO. I have said from the initial CHICOTW nomination. Unfortunately, once we worked on the page we found preponderant redlinks. I have always known this would be a problem and asked for help creating stubs. You may recall I encouraged us to spend an [Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chicago/COTW/History/CLstubification entire extra week creating stubs]. This still fell short of getting the majority of articles linked. I continued to suggest that we attempt to create stubs. This whole effort six weeks ago seems to have brought down WP:CHICOTW. Since this attempt to get people to create redlinks for a budding WP:FL people have stopped participating in the CHICOTW. This week marks the fifth week in a row that there has been no significant editorial contribution during the CHICOTW. I would say I am afraid to lose CHIICOTW support by mentioning this, but since NO ONE has come by to help this week, it could not get any worse. If anyone cares about getting an FL at CHICOTW for our past efforts it might be a good idea to express such concern by creating 5 or so stubs from among the redlinks at List_of_Chicago_Landmarks. Since I have already created about 3 dozen I have mentioned on the discussion that I am standing pat with my contribution to this concern. However, if any of you cares, feel free to make some stubs. The 20 minute stub instructions are still available. If you create any such stubs list them at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chicago#Newly_Created_Chicago_Related_Pages so that everyone can help you to clean it up. Somehow, Ft. King got listed as a NRHP property in Chicago that is now at List of Chicago Landmarks. Have you seen anything like this [3] which really looks like it is talking about the Robert Abbott House (which is in Chicago), whereas Fort King is in Florida. More help needed

If you have been following along at WP:FLC#List_of_Chicago_Landmarks you know we need help creating stubs for the List to make it a more useful list and help it achieve WP:FLC status. Since I reminded people of this 7 stubs have been created. We need about 40 more to be safe although we may have a successful candidacy with the article as it stands.

Some of you may also be following the success of WP:CHICOTW at Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/COTW/Good Articles. For the last 4 weeks no one has been very active. Thus, I am fearful that Historic Michigan Boulevard District, Harold Washington Cultural Center, Crown Fountain, & Art Institute of Chicago Building will all fail at WP:GAC when their turns come up. Also, Magnificent Mile did not experience the collaborative spirit. Our reputation as a successful collaboration is at stake. In addition to making stubs for the FLC we need your contribution to our collaborations. I am sorry to pull you away from whatever other wikipleasures you may be experiencing, but we need your help. Hello. Re: "map of the park system (i.e. the Chain of Lakes, parkway system, and trails)". Sounded interesting. I don't know where it would go, maybe a large wideimage like the 1915 panorama and the wide tables in geography, demographics and sports, but running under the Parks and recreation section? RE:National Register of Historic Places

No, they are not on the National Register of Historic Places. Have I been placing the wrong category up there? I was under the assumption that everything that is in the NRHP has a date in its column. I bet I have been placing Category:Registered Historic Places in Chicago, Illinois in wrongly then, haven't I? Everything but one article I have added are just Chicago historic places, not national. That is precisely the case. There are 3 Train stations, 1 lighthouse, 2 bridges, the cable car. Rail stations

• I think a standard box would be better than what we have currently. Perhaps a template similar to :Template:Minnesota Corporations would work. Nav Boxes work well for things in succession like :Template:Crossings navbox, but most of these depots aren't connected to each other that way. A Template could simply be divided by city, listing the names of the articles. It could instead be divided by Rail Company, but due to mergers and name changes, that format would be less straightforward.--Appraiser 20:38, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

That is a good idea Elkman. I go by the freight depots at Hopkins (M & St. L and Milwaukee/Soo/CP on the other side of 169) twice each weekday, but it did not add them to the list. I am curious about something I stumbled upon today. In an ask.com search on the Socony-Vacuum Building it came up as an NHL. Sure enough under its alias it shows up in your infobox creation tool. It also shows at http://www.historicdistricts.com/IL/Cook/state.html on the historic districts page. Is it in an NHL district? I can not find it at http://tps.cr.nps.gov/nhl/default.cfm. I started adding in the geocode data to my template, but for some reason the numbers I'm pulling from their database do not match up with the numbers your infobox generator shows. For instance, refnum 131 you generate:

| lat_degrees = 33 | lat_minutes = 27 | lat_seconds = 50.4 | lat_direction = N
| long_degrees = 86 | long_minutes = 49 | long_seconds = 6.83 | long_direction = W

But my calculations from the data[6] show:

33, 27, 56.6568000000 and -86, 49, 9.02280000000

It seems there is some error in the seconds somewhere. They have explicit lat / long columns in the file I downloaded, so I was just using that. If you take a look at this link I plotted your numbers, my numbers and what google though based on the address, so I'm not sure its a huge deal, just wondering about your thoughts. pw 15:57, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

I started looking through some that I knew the location (so I could verify via satellite) and I found some where our numbers matched and they had the right location, so it seems like everything is fine, just some minor discrepencies on some records, I will make a note of that in an HTML comment when i put the data in the infobox. pw 16:54, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

I posted a question at Template talk:Infobox nrhp#Template:Location map vs Superimpose, maybe you have an answer. I would say there isn't any pressing need for replacement pics. Eventually someone will probably get better ruins pictures. Unfortunately the best answer to your question is to get a new camera :/. There are two things that can help with Cannon point & shoots like we have, shoot at dawn/dusk or very cloudy days. I'd like to see a couple of pictures in the article. I'd tend away from identifiable people in costume. A panel such as Con2007_102 would be good, although boring to look at. A group of people in costume (without clear faces) would be good. I like Con2007_116, although it's a single costume. I'll look through pictures from previous years to see what might work. I'm absolutely sure Dave Romm (User:Baron Dave) would have a suitable one. He's always taking 100s of pics with a good camera. Perhaps he has an exciting Klingon battle or something similar. I-35W Mississippi River bridge

The panoramic picture that you removed showed how the river banks were being used prior to the installation of the I-35W bridge against those very river banks. In particular, the south span of the I-35W Mississippi River bridge rests on the former Minneapolis Gas Works manufactured-gas plant site shown in that photo. You're welcome; I'm using it as an 'excuse' to get more practice working with Inkscape. Yes, the articles do look cleaner with the map as part of the bridge infobox; in fact, I created another map to go further 'up' the current map and to add a few more bridges. So on the pages that the old map didn't cover (which didn't have the map), I put the map in, using the info from the pages you changed to know how to put the map in the infobox. By the way, the Short Line Bridge over the Mississippi River is still open, though not in the greatest shape. CP Rail (or Minnesota Commercial Railway) made some repairs to the bridge after last summer's fireworks vandalism, and as far as I know, trains are using the bridge again. Uh, the article for the Short Line Bridge says some parts of it have a 50-pound weight limit. I and my wheelchair weigh ten times that much, so I think that 'closed' is an adequate statement until the article is corrected. The MPR slideshow doesn't credit anyone's photos, so I don't think it's necessary for them to make an exception for my photo. As for WCCO, my real name is Todd Murray, if someone is indeed going to call them to make a correction. Like I said at User talk:Appraiser, though, the photo is licensed under the GFDL, which doesn't require attribution. The Creative Commons license does require attribution, but the photo is dual-licensed. I'd be happy with just crediting the photo to Wikipedia. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 15:41, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

MPR does credit photographers, in this case at the end of the slideshow. Pardon the strike to correct that above. It is terribly sad to watch but I can confirm MPR added credits for Elkman above and beyond the call of duty. Elkman- I submitted the photo in question...I wasn't trying to take credit for the photo, but I heard on the news and saw on the website that they were asking for photos of the I 35 bridge prior to the collapse and I noticed that the picture was not yet added to the list. It required me to give a name, so I put my own, and I also added to the notes that it was from Wikipedia but this was not added to the photo. I assure you that I meant no ill will in sending the photo in, nor was I trying to take the credit for myself. I was simply trying to help with the investigation by submitting photos that they did not have. Please accept my apology. -Ellertson

US State Locator Maps

Hi Elkman, thanks for noticing the US State locator maps. Glad to hear that they are useful (which was my hope and intent). The process I use to make them is briefly described here. Unfortunately I do not have latitude and longitude information coupled with the images I take from the US Census web site (and I almost always crop the images and in some cases paste / stitch them together, so such data might not help much anyway).

I do know that User:VerruckteDan has been doing something very similar to what you are doing for locator dots used in Geoboxes, so Pennsylvania and Delaware and Louisiana and Illinois and probably New York are done (in terms of latitude and longitude for the corners). I would check with VerruckteDan as to which other maps he has calibrated and how he gets the dats (I think it is eyeball again, but GoogleEarth might be useful too).

I also know a Commons user left a message on my talk page there about making SVG versions of the maps (see here). I am not currently able to do this, nor am I planning on doing it, but there may be SVG versions coming from that user or someone else.

Alaska is my problem child in these maps. I have the state map done, but the Canadian and Russian borders are driving me nuts (as they are not on the Census maps and I can't find the same projections etc. to steal them from). If you think it would be useful, I could just put the state map on Commons (with no other countries shown).

Finally, I have not forgotten that I once promised you an article on the Larrys Creek covered bridge (on the NRHP) and will try to get to it this month (sorry to be so slow).

FYI, the Alaska locator map is now done and thus all 50 states have locator maps. I think Russia is tilted too much for the projection used for Alaska, but as it is an AK locator map, hopefully it is OK (and I added a note to the map on accuracy of Canadian and Russian borders). I noticed you added a category to the above. I was wondering what source you were using as it is not mentioned in the article that the fort is part of some sort of registry. MN state parks

I am trying to get List of Minnesota state parks to Featured List status. Would you like to try and write a history paragraph? It looks like this is the only book resource and there isn't much online so I expect it would be pretty short, but any help would be great. :) I made a little commented out TODO section on the article. Thomas Wilson (shipwreck)

I saw your note on the talk page there. I was sort of wondering if the ship was named after Thomas Wilson (Minnesota), a legislator, but it turns out that he was from Winona, Minnesota, much further south in the state. I think it would be fine to mention that the ship is named for McDougall's mentor.

As far as the pictures go, I think it would be great to include them in the article. However, the Minnesota Historical Society Copyright and Use Information page says that images reproduced from their collections are for viewing and personal use only, and that any commercial use requires a request for permission and possibly a payment. But it also says, "The nature of historical archival collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult to determine." I'm not sure if that means they can't claim copyright on other people's images (especially if the copyright has expired, as is surely the case with the Wilson images). Nevertheless, their copyright and use information statement has dissuaded me from using pictures from their site. It's too bad, because I'd love to use some of their historical photos in Wikipedia articles. It'd be nice if Wikipedia had some sort of agreement with the Historical Society where we could use their photos, but that would take more negotiation than I'm capable of. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 03:19, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

I might mention, the caveats on historical archives collections apply only to those works that are copyrighted. If you can prove that an image is free use, you are under no obligation to follow what they say, they are generally just covering their bases. Now the origin of an image can be difficult to determine but a little legwork and pouring over old books can usually determine it, I have found anyway. That being said, I think you earned this:

Thanks for your concern, IvoShandor. I'm an admin on Commons, familiar with licensing requirements, and I'm comfortable these images are going to be fine. Since this is a current DYK nom, it seemed a good idea to get the images into the article, as the capstan, however remarkable (and that Elkman went and got it himself... I used an underwater housing for my existing digital camera. I don't have a fancy setup yet, but it works for what I've been using it for. (A couple other divers on the boat had pretty extensive setups, with large strobes and weird positioning devices. One of them had so much equipment that it took a small suitcase to carry it all.) I've wanted to dive those wrecks ever since I got my certification last fall. I'm hoping to do the Madeira and the Hesper sometime this fall, and I'd like to visit the others on the Lake Superior Shipwrecks on the National Register if any of the shops run tours to them. (Except the Onoko, which is too deep for recreational diving.)

Your article inspired me... I did some tinkering with the whaleback article to tighten it up, as well as the SS Meteor and then pounded out Christopher Columbus (whaleback) ... hopefully two whaleback articles up at nearly the same time won't be too big a deal. I was always fond of whalebacks as a boy and had forgotten all about them. The Wilson went down not far from the place of her birth since she was built in Superior. My researches gave me enough material to do an article on McDougall and his company American Steel Barge Company as well, if I get inspired. My plan

Based upon the discussion and kind words offered by you and others my plan is to do these things:

1. Edit less than normal, for awhile anyway.
2. Contribute less to discussion pages in the WP namespace, (save those discussions I am involved in currently)
3. Try not to let Wikipedia upset me so much (which it does at times and my edits reflect it, i.e. I become rather hostile towards some people)
4. Try to remember just how shitty of a school Northern Illinois University is, and that the president there is more likely to have graduated from Hollywood Upstairs Medical College than anywhere else.

Indeed, the Federer diff was a fairly standard case of BLP vandalism and not one of those "block-on-sight" things. But I blocked Zlcarck based also on his previous history of vandalism and his deleted contribs which you can't see right now. Still, in the rationale for the block, I thought it made sense to stress the Federer incident because it is probably his most serious offense and it was the most recent. Soon-to-be-admin

Since you appear to be an upcoming admin, I have a question. I tagged List of Swedish Swimming Championships champions with "prod" (which was later changed to an AfD - probably a good thing) because it was a large list with absolutely no verbiage about the topic. Now there is a short lead. My concerns seem to be the minority view. I'm wondering if I'm really way in left field, and even whether I should bother to continue to patrol for AfDs. Sometimes, it's hard to tell what are suitable criteria for a list. The standards keep evolving, and consensus can change. There have been a lot of list articles on AFD lately, though they're often along the lines of List of fictional characters who can manipulate sound. (I can manipulate sound, too. I do it every time I turn on my stereo.) I think if I had questions about whether an article was AFD-worthy or not, I'd check out some similar articles and see if they've survived an AFD before, and I'd also check out similar discussions currently at AFD. For example, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of types of cricket delivery is looking like it will be deleted. In the case of List of Swedish Swimming Championships champions, the other editor could have simply removed the prod tag, but he thought it needed some discussion.

On a side note, according to the list, tennis star Björn Borg appears to have won the 400m freestyle in 1936, 1937, 1938, 1940, and 1941, even though he wasn't born until 1956. Now that's talent. --Elkman ^(Elkspeak) 14:55, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Hey there Elkman, Congratulations on becoming an administrator. Obviously, it is unlikely that you will know how to use the tools at first and mistakes are bound to happen, so if you would like to practice using them, with step by step guides to follow, in an environement that you can do no harm in, then why not pop down to the new admin school where we have pages on blocking, deleting and restoring pages, protecting and unprotecting pages and viewing deleted pages. Rouse Simmons

I actually read that article awhile back and have linked it from the Christmas tree cultivation article. Very interesting indeed. It will probably merit a mention in the History of Christmas tree cultivation, which isn't quite complete. Apparently, from what I have read, these "Christmas tree ships" were pretty common.
