Mandatory paid editing disclosure

[edit]
Information icon

Hello Fairlight6. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Fairlight6. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Fairlight6|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. ~Anachronist (talk) 03:12, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anachronist,
Thank you for your helpful response.
I am very happy to edit the article to completely remove any elements that seemingly promote the topic - I am simply trying to update the page to provide an more accurate account.
I am affiliated via my employment so do I still need to provide the suggested disclosure even though I will remove any info that sounds promotional in nature? Happy to do so if that is the case. Fairlight6 (talk) 05:22, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the transparency. Yes, you are considered a paid editor if you are editing Wikipedia about a topic related to an employer who is compensating you.
I advise you to refrain from editing the article at all. The information you added has already been removed. If you want to make substantive changes to the article, propose those changes on the talk page, with references to reliable sources that are independent of Geoff Lord. Your proposal should be in the form "change X to Y" or "add X after Y" or "remove X". Because Geoff Lord is a living person, Wikipedia requires any statement about him to cite a reliable source for verifcation. Unsourced statements get removed quickly.
If you make changes yourself, the article will be tagged as being edited by someone with a conflict of interest. You may use the template {{request edit}} to preface your proposals on the talk page. That template causes your proposal to be listed on a category page that is monitored by some editors. ~Anachronist (talk) 07:00, 21 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome Fairlight6!
Hello Fairlight6. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions!

I'm Sm8900, one of the other editors here, and I hope you decide to stay and help contribute to this amazing repository of knowledge.

Do maintain a neutral point of view
  Don't spam
  Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest
  Don't commit vandalism

If you need further help, you can:
  Ask a question
or you can:
  Get help at the Teahouse
or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{Help me}} here on your talk page and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
  Help contribute to articles
  Perform maintenance tasks

Become a member of a project that interests you
  Help design new templates
Subscribe and contribute to The Signpost
Translate articles from Wikipedias in other languages

To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. You can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you can put {{My sandbox}} on your user page. By the way, seeing as you haven't created a user page yet, simply click here to start it.

Please remember to:

  • Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your signature, a link to your talk page, and a timestamp.
  • Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!
