Bot approval

Have you reviewed the steps needed for bot approvals? See WP:BRFA - generally usernames ending in bot are blocked unless they're approved bots, and since this account has no history at all (and has a slightly peculiar name) it will receive additional scrutiny. I'm not so sure if this is the way that people "talk" to one another through Wikipedia, but I hope it works. I'm busy applying for bot approval for a project that I work on together with a friend. But we're halfway and did not complete the process. It's strange however that this discussion takes place on my real account and not on the bot account. My user does not end with "Bot". Non-free image use

Hi Fako85. I'm not sure wether you're using a bot or adding image manually, but can you please check the image files you're adding to User:Fako85/feed. Non-free images are only allowed to be used in the article namespace per WP:NFCC#9, which means they cannot be used on any of your user subpages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:44, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Marchjuly:. I am indeed using a bot and it is using the API and only selects the free page images. I've looked up the page in the API and it indicates the image that you changed as "page_image_free". Click here for api data indicating it as a free image. The last file I removed from the feed was File:Odin_lloyd.jpg, which is licensed as {{Non-free fair use}}. Sometimes a Commons file exist under the same name as the non-free and that is the file the bot wants to add; there is, however, no c:File:Odin_lloyd.jpg in this case. I'm not sure how to read the API link you've provided above; however, in the link I'm looking at it says "page_image", not "page_image_free". The API response changed now from free to non-free. I guess that's good news. It means the API is not really broken. I've asked the tech mailing list how they explain the difference between the API and the file information. So far no response, but I get those emails with a bit of delay. I'll keep you posted. Hi @Marchjuly:. It looks like the image in question was not using a proper template for Non-free fair use. It copied some HTML, but not the proper template probably, although I didn't go too deep into that. When TheDJ changed the file to use the template the API picked it up immediately as a non-free image. So it's good to use such templates where appropriate instead of just adding a rationale in text without a template. Your addition after TheDJ was fine for the API as well. I'm asking if there is a bot that you can use to fix image uses in a semi-automised way. That could save you a lot of work when bots got confused like mine did. I'm not aware of a bot that does this type of thing. Perhaps good places to ask about this would be at WT:NFCC, WP:MCQ or even possibly WP:WPT. Maybe someone good with templates can create such a thing if one doesn't currently exist. FWIW, I changed the tempalte for that file because it seem inappropriate, I did not even think that it might have any impact on API information. However, if it did resolve the problem, then maybe the same thing would work with other files with the same issue. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:42, 23 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Marchjuly: just for completeness of this thread. There is indeed no tool to update image references automatically. I'll work on a way to update all feeds created by my bot so that copyright incidents like above can be handled easily even if thousands of pages use the feed.
