Spam farm you blocked

Hi HJ Mitchell, I stumbled across the spam farm you blocked and found

who registered a little after your initial block wave, uses the visual editor and has overlaps on links being spammed with other socks ([1], [2], [3]). Any chance you could check/block them? Pahunkat (talk) 18:15, 4 May 2024 (UTC)

RFA2024 update: phase I concluded, phase II begins

Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:

See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:09, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

Promotion of Wolverton Viaduct

Congratulations, HJ Mitchell! The article you nominated, Wolverton Viaduct, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Gog the Mild (talk) via FACBot (talk) 12:05, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

IP address blocked?

Hi there. I can't access my regular account (Looktowindward) as a block was put on my IP address (I think the message suggested my IP was within a 'range' that included accounts which you detected had been abusive). I tried to log-in to contact you about this, as I certainly haven't been abusive on here, but my could not remember my password - and the password reset page is blocked under the IP restriction. So I set up this new account to get in touch and ask if you could remove the block on my IP, so I can use the original Looktowindward account (i.e. so I can access the password reset and go in again that way)! I hope that makes sense and that this can be resolved. Thanks! Looktowindward2 (talk) 15:42, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi again. I've now reset my password for my original account (via a different wifi). I will try to access later from the IP address that was blocked. Looktowindward (talk) 08:19, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

I do wish you had not removed protection from that page. You might think 16 years after the vandalism started, the vandal would have moved on. Such is not the case. The vandal has been remarkably persistent with this stupid stuff about homeless people, which first appeared in 2006.[4] ] If you don't want "permanent" semi, maybe set it to expire in 10 years or so. Widen a pblock? Or blacklist?

Hi Harry! You pblocked Special:Contributions/106.222.208.0/22 from various articles to do with steel production in India back in March. That hasn't stopped them adding their spamlink to more tangental articles – Tata Steel for instance [5] [6]. Is it worth you widening their pblock to include Tata Steel or would I be better requesting a blacklisting of reninemetal.com? 81.187.192.168 (talk) 17:45, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

Blacklisting is definitely one option but there's more than one domain being spammed though there are constructive edits on the range. Might be worth raising at ANI to see if anyone has any bright ideas. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 09:16, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Please renew the block of 193.219.130.166

Last April, you blocked 193.219.130.166 for one year to prevent persistent disruption. The block has expired but they have continued the disruptive behavior and another block would be appreciated. Thanks! ElKevbo (talk) 11:16, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

RegentsPark blocked this editor for 36 hours. Given that this disruption has been ongoing for several years from this one IP address and continued after a 1-year block, a block of similar length is likely warranted as a shorter block seems unlikely to be effective. ElKevbo (talk) 21:39, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
@ElKevbo they can have a longer break. Thanks. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 09:10, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks but they've just changed to a new IP address. Rather than continuing to play whack-a-mole, I've requested an edit filter be created. ElKevbo (talk) 11:53, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Please grunt my Autopatrolled right

Hi. Kindly grant my Autopatrolled rights. You did it, but star Mississippi snatched. Per their obligation I have WP: CIR issue, which don't fit any of my edits. Either grunt me or please block me to please Star Mississippi. Regards- Twinkle1990 (talk) 17:02, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

Harry, while I have you--I was working on this article and ran into phrenitis. The first (the familiar term) dealt mostly with fiction, and the second with the medical term--but of course they're the same thing in the end. I mean, I could try to separate the content between the two, but that seems rather superficial to me, and part of the content I added is really medical. The literature (see the Peterson article that's cited a few times now) also treats them together. You have any thoughts? Gotta get this up to FA! Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:48, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Hey writer

...I don't see how this range can publish drafts including shit like this, Draft:Wikipedia supports hamas. The log says they're blocked from "specified non-editing actions", but I can't see what that means. What am I missing? Drmies (talk) 21:29, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

@Drmies it meant that they couldn't create an account on that range but could edit. I see Primefac has added a restriction on creating new pages. I'm guessing there's too much collateral for a full block. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:53, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
I see at WP:PBLOCK that "Partial blocks can be leveraged to only block account creation from an IP or IP range, but permit normal editing. To do this, simply impose a partial block but leave the "Pages" and "Namespaces" fields blank." I assume that's what was done here; does that automatically generate the language "specified non-editing actions"? If so, it would be helpful to say that at PBLOCK.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:00, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks Harry, Bbb23. Yeah, I really was puzzled by the log--maybe I didn't look carefully enough? I think I did click "change block" to see what was there, and I see what's there now, which is of course different. Drmies (talk) 16:14, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, the language is from the software. Try it on a test account or something. Select partial block and tick (only) block account creation. We could matbe ask the technical folks to write a clearer log entry. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:59, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
I see it now: thanks! Drmies (talk) 21:25, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
Just a note that I flipped the "no page creation" switch because they were (unsurprisingly) creating problematic pages. Primefac (talk) 00:36, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

Totally unrelated, Harry and Bbb, am I wrong in thinking that 2014 Tampines flat stabbing really has no encyclopedic relevance? Drmies (talk) 16:49, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Request to expand block on IP user

Hi, would you consider a full block for the user 2605:8D80:6A4:5E00:4159:1D20:2AAE:F476 (talk · contribs · (/64) · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) per recent edits? [7][8] Many previous blocks. xRENEGADEx (talk | contribs) 10:38, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

@XRENEGADEx the partial block is on the whole /32 which is absolutely enormous. It's likely your juvenile friend here is a different person to the one who was causing problems a few months ago. We can block individual /64s if necessary but there's nothing on that one except those two edits so blocking it would be disproportionate at this time. @SchroCat definitely! I'm easing back into things now that real life is a bit more stable but I'll be sure to have a look. It's right up my street (almost literally these days!), and I might have some sources for you! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:44, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
Excellent - always happy for more sources, and any comments, of course! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 11:09, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
@SchroCat Fancy a collaboration one day on Balcombe Street siege? Between us we must have most of the sources and enough background knowledge to get it up to FA. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:24, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
Definitely. It's been on my list for a while (I got some of the sources from the Wiki library when I finished on the Spaghetti House siege, and that was a few years ago now!) Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 06:43, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
@SchroCat Mine too. I did the Iranian embassy and Operation Flavius (of "Death on the Rock" fame) years ago and there's an overlap with some of my police shootings. I've been compiling sources for an article on the SAS and the IRA for a while too. Balcombe Street could make an interesting little project. "specified non-editing actions"

Hi there! FWIW, I just rolled back this edit] by 83.30.178.205 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). There was this strange edit summary "(avoid plague of TAB-s)", and as far as I can see, the edit resulted in nothing visible. I noticed that you range-blocked 83.30.0.0/16 in april for "specified non-editing actions", and I was wondering what this meant, and how this IP can still edit. Cheers - DVdm (talk) 20:34, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Note: here's another one: [9], by 83.30.189.138 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), with edit summary "(minus FULLWIDTH space)". - DVdm (talk) 09:10, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

Note: looks like 83.30.151.164 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is narrowly blocked for a week by Extraordinary Writ. Given the above, that will probably not be sufficient. - DVdm (talk) 10:31, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

Note: See again, Special:Contributions/83.30.172.136 but "partially blocked". Also pinging Extraordinary Writ. - DVdm (talk) 20:53, 30 June 2024 (UTC)

Maybe you'd like to bump Special:Contributions/83.30.0.0/16 up to a full block, Harry? Looks like that fellow has been using it for quite some time. (I'd do it myself if it wasn't a CU block.) Extraordinary Writ (talk) 22:01, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
@Extraordinary Writ my considerations were that he's not necessarily using the whole /16 at any one time and it's a big and busy range. But you have my permission to make it a full block if you don't think there's a better option. I won't be able to look in any detail today. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 08:13, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
Looks like JBW has blocked the /17, which should do the trick for now. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 08:10, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Short blocks on smaller ranges is probably the way to go. I think I blocked a /17 last time but blocked account creation on tge /16 to slow them down a bit. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 09:42, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

recent revert on taylor swift page

hello - you reverted my recent edit - is there a rule POV lead cannot be placed on featured article. we have tried to use talk page - you can see it. but two involved editors are making disruptive reverts and making it impossible. An uninvolved editor who put lot of effort has already quit because of disruptive edits by these users ( see talk page history ). We need that tag so that we can get attention from more editors. please revert your edit. @HJ Mitchell Gsgdd (talk) 13:20, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

@Gsgdd I will be re-reverting your addition of the tag and if you reinstate again I will block you from editing that article; I'm contemplating doing so anyway. I can see that there is an ongoing discussion on the talk page and that you have found your way to the dispute resolution and NPOV noticeboards which has attracted outside opinions, and I can see that the discussion appears to be productive. The only disruption I see is your conduct towards editors who disagree with you. You will struggle to get revolutionary change on Wikipedia; the consensus model just doesn't move that quickly. I suggest you continue working towards evolutionary change and finding a version that most people can agree on. A request for comment has already been suggested as the next step once you have a proposal to ask for feedback on. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:49, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

changing other people comments and doing whatever you want is no way to go. People spend lot of time and effort on this. Im not going to edit that article - i have already said that in my last revision comment. Unless someone take initiative, I'm positive that article will remain the same or not any different because of two people there. One of them wrote the intro. second one only edits taylor swift pages (biased). Gsgdd (talk) 19:52, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Another editor also complained about them - they said these user's are bludgeoning and preventing consensus.

Sock

There is an ip at special:contribs/2800:810:48E:6DA:3D38:5049:DCE4:93D4 retreading some patters of User:Hidolo, who you recently indeffed. ~ Pinging you here, because you banned him for some checkuser related stuff..? JackTheSecond (talk) 17:35, 7 July 2024 (UTC)

Icebear244

Hi, regarding this checkuser block, do you have any information about possible sockmasters? The closest matches I get are to AMuseo (Historicist) and All Rows4 (NoCal1000), although I'm not sure that the various methods I'm testing have the resolution and reliability required to distinguish between them in all cases. Sean.hoyland (talk) 04:46, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

@Sean.hoyland there was some suggestion it was Icewhiz. Ultimately the technical evidence wasn't strong enough to definitively state it was one master over any other (hence the lag of a tag) but the combination of edits and technical evidence add up to an account that has likely been sold or compromised by one of the topic area's prolific sockmasters and someone using sophisticated methods to obfuscate their identity. After all these years, I'm not sure it's possible to tell them all apart conclusively. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:03, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. Sean.hoyland (talk) 12:44, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

Blocked IP Address

Hello, I saw you blocked an IP Address of mine, particularly this one. Please note I wasn't doing anything wrong, rather all I wanted to do is fix the location of a little arrow. Unfortunately, the edit filter did not like what I was doing, but I got away with it in the end, as you can see here. My edit was reverted, and then un-reverted. I have reported the false positive of the edit filter, here. I must say, I got more than I bargained for, all of this for a measly edit request! Anyway, I do apologize to you if I caused any inconvenience. Please note, there is no need to unblock the IP Address, as I get a new one every 1-2 hours. Hi, my IP i think is public and this is my cellular data IP thingy, there is a blocked article which is by you and i didn't do, it would be nice if you could remove it because i use this IP to edit and the block notice makes me look like i did it. 2605:8D80:400:9392:3921:D6A3:7729:EE70 (talk) 03:21, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi, it's nothing personal. Someone else on that mobile network was causing a problem on that article. They were bouncing around multiple addresses on the range so I put a partial block on the entire /32 but that's no reflection on you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:14, 8 July 2024 (UTC)

About notifying and AIV

Hi there! Just to reply to your question at AIV. I warned them successively after checking each of their contributions and only after I did I realized all of his contributions were vandalisms, and that's why I reported them to AIV. In any case I'll keep an eye on their contributions and report again if they keep at it. Thanks. Rkieferbaum (talk) 13:08, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

@Rkieferbaum Please don't report editors to AIV unless they vandalise after an appropriate warning. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:01, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, but your advice here is not in accordance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, such as here: Vandals should always receive enough warnings before being reported unless they are vandalism-only accounts. and here: Should you notice such activity from registered users, revert the edit(s) if not already done, and check the user's contributions to verify whether the other edits are vandalism. If so, the account can be reported to Administrator intervention against vandalism as a "vandalism-only account". Otherwise the ARV twinkle gadget shouldn't even give the option to report to AIV for any other reason than "Vandalism after final (level 4 or 4im) warning given", and it does. Like I said, I didn't realize that account to be VOA until further inspection after reverting and warning about previous edits (and after I checked all edits, the filter log and the account creation timestamp). Cheers. Rkieferbaum (talk) 17:59, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
@Rkieferbaum even vandalism-only accounts should be warned (with the exception of hate speech, libel, etc). The account you reported made a handful of silly edits then stopped. Then half an hour later you gave them four warnings and reported them to AIV. There's not an admin on this project who would have blocked them for that (trust me, I've been doing this for a long time and I've made a lot of blocks). Blocks are meant to prevent disruption, not as a punishment (that's straight from the blocking policy, which trumps an information page and an explanatory essay. If they make a single unconstructive edit after being told they could be blocked, we can drop the banhammer because we know they haven't heeded the warnings but if they don't vandalise again then a block is (at best) pointless. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:10, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
I understand and respect your interpretation of the blocking policy, and I do agree that reporting that account to AIV long after they stopped editing wasn't necessary. I still disagree with the notion that accounts can only be reported to AIV if they continue vandalizing after being warned. It wasn't due to a lack of warning that the account (and many others I reported) kept vandalizing after 3 or 4 clear instances of vandalism. If a new account performs a few constructive edits and then jokes around a bit, warning them serves to discourage that behavior by signaling that we are monitoring their edits. However, if an account is registered and immediately starts vandalizing different articles within minutes, repeating reversed vandalism, and making absurd edits (e.g., stating someone was born 4.5 billion years ago and their father is "Nazi Hitler"), it's clear they are not here to build an encyclopedia.
Blocking such accounts is not a punishment but a quick and efficient way to stop disruption. This is why I believe the guideline page does not contradict the blocking policy. If you still feel there is a contradiction, then I encourage you to propose changes to remove the option in ARV to report an account as "Evidently a vandalism-only account" and to update the guideline page and essay accordingly. Until then, I believe it is reasonable to report (and block) accounts that are evidently vandalism-only.
Cheers and thanks for the chat. Rkieferbaum (talk) 00:49, 18 July 2024 (UTC)

Football Edits

Sorry HJ Mitchell, I'm not sure if I've made an error to my edits on association football and Cuju and got IP banned. My partner works at the national football museum in Manchester and she noticed some errors on those pages. I had an account so adjusted them (specifically around how Cuju relates to Soccer). If my edits/citations weren't valid for any reason please let me know.

Something wrong with IP vandal block

Hi there. A few days ago you have banned 62.45.110.157 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) (after my request) for 31 hours. This looks like pretty weird term (I would've expected 31 days, or 24 hrs, etc), but maybe it was meant to be like that, I don't know. Anyway, after the 31-hrs block expired, IP returned to vandalazing pages immediately. Yet when i try to report him on ANI, the bot reverts my submissions with a comment that "user already blocked by HJ Mitchell" (even though that block actually expired). --BlameRuiner (talk) 06:03, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

(passing-by user) It's removing your report because you added in the explanation {{vandal|2A02:A442:74BD:0:0:0:0:0/64}}, which is an IP range that is currently blocked by HJ Mitchell. It sees the vandal template, thinks it's a report, and removes the entire report. – 2804:F1...E9:11BA (talk) 06:16, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
@BlameRuiner my anonymous friend is correct. I've renewed the block on 62.45.. now. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 08:42, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

No decision on IP block exempt yet

My home ISP uses shared IP. You have ranged blocked the IP for vandalism and proxy abuse.Special:Contributions/103.106.239.0/24, Unfortunately, I've also got blocked despite doing nothing wrong. There's no record of abuse, vandalism or block on me on all version of Wikipedia. Also, I've never used proxy services.

I've requested for IP block exempt on my account on talk page few days ago. User talk:Salekin.sami36

But got no response yet. As you were the blocking admin, I thought it would be best to contact with you.

I would be glad if you look into the matter. Salekin.sami36 (talk) 15:37, 30 July 2024 (UTC)

Seems reasonable. Done. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:52, 30 July 2024 (UTC)

Sockpuppet returned?

Hello, I have an investigation for several suspected sockpuppets at currently opened. If you have the time and could run a check user on them, it would be fantastic since one has resumed the same editing pattern on Death of Rey Rivera. Thanks again! Awshort (talk) 15:54, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Pevsner

Harry - appreciate you’re very busy zapping vandals etc., so you may have missed my ping. Having finally unpacked most of the books, I’ve responded to a number of your Pevsner requests on my Talkpage. Hopefully, you’ll still have a little time for article creation/improvement. Take care and all the best. KJP1 (talk) 17:12, 30 July 2024 (UTC)

@KJP1 really appreciate the Pevsner snippets! Life is busy at the moment so vandal zapping is about all I have time for but I'll be back in the mainspace soon. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:26, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Longer block may be needed

More unsourced disruption at Project 305 after the previous block expired and after multiple warnings have already been issued. Assuming we need a longer block at this point, thanks. --GoneIn60 (talk) 15:13, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

@GoneIn60 I would agree with you but they haven't been around for ~72 hours. Let me know if they return and I'll see what I can do. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:27, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
Yeah I noticed they dropped off as well. Will do, thanks. --GoneIn60 (talk) 17:29, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Unprotection of Whitney Houston

You protected the Whitney Houston page over 12 years ago, but I think unprotection is now necessary since it is now long after her death 2601:282:4700:272:18EA:F6D7:22BD:585 (talk) 04:02, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

London rangeblock needed again

Earlier this year you blocked Special:Contributions/2A00:23C4:609:8F01:0:0:0:0/64 for genre warring in music and film articles. The person is back at it with the same range. Binksternet (talk) 03:52, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

@Binksternet I've renewed the block for six months. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:50, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
