My RfA (reprise)

[edit]

Well, it's been a week now that I've been an administrator and I'd like to take this moment to once again thank everyone who supported my RfA, and to let you all know that I don't think I've screwed anything up yet so I hope I'm living up to everyone's expectations for me. But if I ever fall short of those expectations, I'd certainly welcome folks telling me about it!

A belated note - Gary Kirk's RfA

[edit]

Thank you very much for your support in my RfA. Unfortunately consensus was not reached, and the nomination was not successful. However, I do appreciate your participation, am still in support of the Wikipedia project, and will continue to contribute without interruption. Thanks again! --Elonka 16:30, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for informing me about this. Currently, I cannot make any promises regarding this as I would most likely be working on these two days. However, I would let you know if my real world situation changes. Thank you for your support in my RfA, which passed with a final tally of (56/0/2). It was great to see so much kind support from such competent editors and administrators as commented on my RfA.

I know I have much reading to do before I'll feel comfortable enough to use some of the more powerful admin tools, so I'll get right to it.

November Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Thanks for your input!

[edit]

Thank you for taking part in my RfA. The RfA was not successful, mostly because I did a pretty bad job of presenting myself. I'll run again sometime in the next few months, in the hopes that some will reconsider.

In the meantime, one of the projects I'm working on is A Wikimedia Administrator's Handbook. This is a wikibook how-to guide intended to help new administrators learn the ropes, as well as to simply "demystify" what adminship entails. If you are an administrator, please help out with writing it, particularly on the technical aspects of the tools. Both administrators and non-administrators are welcome to help link in and sort all of the various policies regarding the use of these tools on wikipedia in particular (as well as other projects: for example, I have almost no experience with how things work on wiktionary or wikinews). Users who are neither familiar with policy or the sysop tools could be of great help by asking questions about anything that's unclear. The goal is to get everything together in one place, with a narrative form designed to anticipate the reader's next question.

A second project, related but not entailed, is a book on wikimedia in general, with a history of how various policies evolved over time, interesting trivia (e.g., what the heck was "wikimoney" about?), and a history of how the wikimedia foundation itself came about and the larger issues that occurred during its history (such as the infamous "Spanish Fork").

Again, thanks for your input on the RfA, and thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide for the handbook. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 14:37, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding WCC, it houses government offices and shops. That's true. But I still fail to see its notability in the worldwide context. Kimchi.sg 04:21, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Security of your account (or lack thereof)

[edit]

Just when I thought this and this were the last edits you'd let your friends make while you were "away at lunch", just 5 days ago you made this edit which was a mix of good addition and sneaky vandalism. Apart from your subsequent edit summary, I had no way of telling whether it was really you who made that edit.

Please, please, please, get into the habit of locking your computer whenever you leave it untouched, even if you are going away for just one minute. You can lock your computer in less than one second by pressing Windows Key + L. If I see you making another edit which appears to be even slightly vandalistic I may have no choice but to block your account indefinitely, the same treatment as given to those who disclose their passwords on their user pages or otherwise compromise the security of their accounts. Regards, Kimchi.sg 04:27, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What a lousy threat! I really hate it when contributors are treated in this manner. The threat of ban is totally unwarranted; those edits were just pranks on the user's namespace, probably by his friends. To threaten with an indefinite ban is ridiculous and abusive. --Vsion 07:44, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Terence, I suggest you lock your computer while you are away. You cannot afford to leave your account open for other people to commit vandalism with. However, Kimchi – I would suggest that you tone down that warning. Indef-block makes it sound like an abuse. — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 12:35, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Opus Dei RFC

[edit]

In answer to your question on the AFD discussion, yes, Opus Dei members seem to actively be inserting propagandistic/"brochure" style material into Wikipedia. There are 5-6 single-purpose accounts who have hundreds of edits, but not a single one unrelated to Opus Dei. There's been a history of puppetry on Opus Dei topics-- for example, when the Opus Dei article was trying to be nominated as a FAC, there were 3-4 users who "suddenly showed up" and voted for Opus Dei as their first or second edit.

There's actually been a big edit war going on with regard to that today. After lots of NPOV problems, I have recently done a major rewrite on the Opus Dei article-- but it's been getting reverted by the OD promoters and driving me bonkers! lol. I'm now requesting comments on the talk page. Could you look over the page and comment on whether the rewrite is an improvment and maybe help out in the ensuing discussion? --Alecmconroy 14:04, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for you help out lately on that. It seems like there's a pretty strong consensus that the rewrite is an improvement (11 our of 11 outside views), so, hopefully that's settled. There's a slightly different debate ongoing right now about whether or not the improvement introduced NPOV problem. If you have a second, could you look it over and offer your opinion on whether that's the case? --Alecmconroy 15:30, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[1] is an interesting addition, the article being about the UK television station (1955-1968) that mentions, in passing, Overseas Rediffusion.

I'd agree that O-R needs an article to itself (a sad lack of sources last time I tried) but putting the SGpedian's template on the existing article seems a bit, well, wrong, on so many levels.

In my opinion only. Your mileage may differ :o) ЯEDVERS 19:47, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh cropped.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh cropped.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Oden 09:30, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Having seen other recent RfA's fail once one or two admins opposed and others just piled on the vote, I decided it would save the ignominy if I withdrew my nomination. I don't intend to change the work I do as it's what I enjoy, so it'll be unlikely I'll apply again. Anyway thanks again for taking the time to review my nomination and giving your support. Singapore Airlines fleet

[edit]

Please do not change the Singapore Airlines page. It is in the correct format and the way the other people who changed it had it layouted was incorrect! We are trying to compromise which fleet table we want to use for Wikipedia and so far, this is the most popular table, which is why I created it for Singapore Airlines. The way it was was also hard to read!--Golich17 17:30, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
