Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions, but in one of your recent edits to Animal Farm, it appears that you have added original research, which is against Wikipedia's policies. Original research refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and personal experiences—for which no reliable, published sources exist; it also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. Thank you. DonIago (talk) 20:19, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Union Flag

[edit]

If you follow the discussions and conflicting citations the question as to whether the Union Flag should be called a jack is still very much a matter of debate. clearly there are those who for whatever reason need to denigrate the UK and its flag, but Wikipedia ought always to seek to use the best sources. Please see The College of Arms who clearly use the formal Union Flag, not its diminutive nickname. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 21:29, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The only debate of any merit, or that which has not been clearly determined, is whether the Union Jack is so called because it was a Jack flag, or the jack flag takes its name from the Union Jack, as there is no record of naval "Jacks" predating the Union Jack. First used at sea from 1606 it was 100 years before the Union Jack was used on land. Whilst neither Union Jack or union flag is incorrect, it would be grammatically and historically correct for the flag described as the union flag to be called the Union Jack. The idea that union Jack should refer only to the diminutive form is a thoroughly modern notion which has been dismissed by the flag institute following extensive historical research. You are of course entitled to express your own opinion, but personally I prefer to bow to the Earl Marshal of England and the nearly as venerable Oxford English Dictionary. To claim that a jack is a "diminutive form is a thoroughly modern notion" flies in the face of etymology, which also applies to your first sentence. The important fact remains that there is still a debate between those who like to denigrate anything to do with Britain, and those who prefer the more formal and correct terminology in an encyclopaedia. I could be missing something but do any of the sources state that Union Jack is incorrect or should only be used in reference to a naval Jack flag? Denigrate? I don't believe I have, but if something has been misunderstood I can assure you there was no intent. JCsuprasta (talk) 21:14, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
