Hi, I'm Isabel Draves and someone just deleted the page I was in the process of updating. It hadn't even been up for an hour yet and was being updated every time I hit save, about every 10 minutes. I was in the process of adding in articles. I do not know why you highlighted my article for deletion the second I created it (?!?) so I am requesting that since you must have some experience editing here, that you reinstate my hour of work on the page, put it back up, give me a chance to add to it and let others know it is up so that they can edit it. Thank you. Idraves (talk) 18:45, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm Isabel Draves and I'm in the process of creating a new page to define some industry terminology that has recently (past 4-5 years) come to be in common use and used even more frequently as time goes on, "Creative technology". I've had the page up for less than an hour and am adding references now. I have about 50 people standing by to help me with this. Surely you don't expect someone to have the entire text of a page ready to go before they post it? I think that would be unfair. Why don't you give me a few days or at least more than an hour to get the content in there? I've never done this before, and I'm not a spammer - I've been working in this industry for 6 years. Thank you. - Isabel — Preceding unsigned comment added by Idraves (talkcontribs) 18:17, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the professor and I created stubs this morning that students will develop over the next six weeks (Field Apothecary). The professor picked those stubs as they are part of important agricultural trends in the Hudson Valley. I hope this will prevent their being speedily deleted. Thanks. - Baynard

Hi, sorry I'm new and my where we've been page was mistakenly saved before I wanted it to be. So sorry, my bad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ConceptK8 (talkcontribs) 23:35, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Political parties in infoboxes

[edit]

Please don't remove the political party from the infoboxes on MP biographies. Infoboxes are there to summarise the information on the page and the key facts about the subject. For an MP their political allegiance is one of those key facts. Yes it does get repeated elsewhere on the page but that's not reason to take it out of the first and possibly most noticable feature of the page. Nthep (talk) 22:36, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Keatinge

[edit]

I can see you've been doing a fine job on removing un-necessary middle names from VC winners, and the middle name is, indeed, not actually needed in general. But I also note "Generally, use the most common format of a name used in reliable sources: if that is with a middle name or initials, make the Wikipedia article title conform to that format." In all the sources I'm familiar with, including the portrait in my grandparents' house (he was my great great great granduncle) he is known as Richard Harte Keatinge. I propose to move the article back to Richard Harte Keatinge.

I suppose I might, tongue in cheek, declare a personal interest in that I might find it mildly inconvenient to be confused with him, even briefly and even though I'm never likely to win the VC or merit a Wikipedia article. Other Richard Keatinges (his distinction made the name popular in the family) may feel the same way. But the name as used by reliable sources is the one that we should use. Would you be kind enough to move the article back, or shall I? Richard Keatinge (talk) 15:41, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Roxboro, Limerick

[edit]

Hi. You added a photo to this article which is captioned "Roxborough School c.1890". The school in the photograph is of the Diocesan School located on the corner of Roxborough Avenue (Jail Boreen) and the Roxborough Road. That photograph comes from an old postcard and it does say "Roxborough School" on it. However, this building has nothing whatsoever to do with the school referenced in the article and was not in Roxborough at all. I am undoing the edit on that basis.Corcs999 (talk) 11:16, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Alternative Ulster Covenant, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://republican-news.org/current/news/2012/09/the_alternative_ulster_covenan.html.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

actually there is a reason in fact four. 1) His name was Charles Frederick worth 2) his label was Charles Frederick worth 3) his "house" was Charles Frederick Worth and 4) you need to raise such things on the talk page before you assume that you can move it. please undo. Thank you for the apologies, all I can say is start a move by saying you want to do it for reasons x,y and z. There are some articles that if you moved like that you would be barred for a length of time no discussion. These names have been arrived at over periods of time and work by a multitude of editors, Charles Fredrick Worth was created in 2004 and has served enquiring people happily since then. Always pays to check and ask beforehand, any delay would be small. Edmund Patrick confer 19:24, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Finally sorted and move rescinded to match how the rest of the world lists him and all the other Wikipedia do as well. As I say mention it on talk page first, start a discussion, that way people will work with you. Edmund Patrick confer 17:22, 17 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Medela page

[edit]

Hi JamKaftan,

I saw your deletion of the Medela page. I sort of understand it, that it was rather promotional. However, this was purely a translation of the Wikipedia German text.

Plus it was designed purely as an intro to a lot more info that is coming; history of the founder, history of the company, scientific research into breast feeding (which is what the company specialises in), and tons of other things.

If you could put it back it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello JamKaftan, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your addition to Alternative Ulster Covenant has had to be removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied without attribution. If you want to copy from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Proposed deletion of List of Flirtatious songs

[edit]

I have created this list as it expands on the existing Category:songs by theme. The list entry is a stepping stone into making a song by theme. In the category entry, however, the song has to have an entry into Wikipedia. The list allows you to find out if the song has this entry. If enough songs are in the list they can be moved to the Category: songs by theme. While love songs are a mainstay of the music world they still each have their own unique character. It is no different than songs about trains or cars. So a recognition of this on Wikipedia is a refinement of the encyclopedia and fits into its objective of universally accessible learning and understanding. I was delighted to find that Wikipedia does have songs by topic and theme and I was willing to expand upon that in a small way. Please explain to me how it does not meet the criteria for inclusion. speedies

[edit]

Speedy A7 is only to be used when there is no plausible indication of importance. An article indicating that someone has published books is an indication of plausible importance, though not necessarily notability , unless he meets WP:CREATIVE. (This applies to books from regular publishers, not self-published books) The bar for passing speedy is much less than actual notability , See WP:CSD and its talk page archives for an explanation. A tiny suggestion

[edit]

Hey JamKaftan, I just wanted to suggest that, if you mark a page from the new pages feed for deletion (whether it be through AFD, PROD, or CSD), it might be best to not also mark it as patrolled. With the article List of Flirtatious Songs, the author removed your prod tag, and the article appeared in the Special:NewPagesFeed as patrolled, so it almost slipped by without getting deleted. Cheers, IagoQnsi 20:52, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, IagoQnsi - I guess this is a problem with the Page Curation tool - it must automatically mark pages as patrolled. JamKaftan (talk) 20:55, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

" Simply deleting others' comments on your talk page is permitted", from the page you shared on my wall. I like to work off my talk page and have it be a clean slate of what I am working on. I will remove the comments on there for pending deletion notices. Per the link you shared, deleting a comment off your own talk page is proof you have read it. Further posts will not show good faith in trying to let me know you've nominated an article; it is clearly you wanting to control a situation. Please stop posting the same comment on my page. Hi Jam...new here so thanks for the insight and help. So deleting the entire entry because of the link that should be avoided is the policy? If that is/was the only issue was the rest of entry up to snuff/acceptable? Thanks, and I realize there is detail already here, but it is a lot to consume in some cases so your insight, expertise, and time is appreciated.

Tell me more

[edit]

When reverting my edit on Robert Livermore, you asked "where else is that style of intro used?" I don't know what you mean by "style", but I'll explain the edit. I was just trying to clarify the sentence. Livermore was never "an English rancher and landowner" - that is, he never owned land in England. As the article says, he was an English "stonemason's apprentice" who moved to California to become a California rancher and landowner. Please explain your objection and I'll try to do better. WCCasey (talk) 05:44, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for responding. My objection is twofold. Firstly, perhaps we browse different sorts of article on wikipedia, but I've rarely seen someone described as "a native of X who did Y" etc, they are a French/Nigerian/Venezuelan/Chinese soldier/singer/naturalist/clown. My second objection is on the point about whether he was English or not. If he came from England, he was English, regardless of where he did the thing that made him notable. A case in point would be Samuel Beckett, who is (correctly in my view) described as Irish, despite living in Paris for 50+ years, and publishing mostly in French. If you can't see your way to describing Livermore as English, perhaps the compromise could be this: Lawrence Durrell is described as an "expatriate British novelist". He was born in India, lived much of the time in Greece, and died in France, and it later turned out he wouldn't even have been eligible for British citizenship - but his being a product of Britain is nonetheless important. So if Durrell can be described as British, surely Livermore, who was actually born in the country, can be afforded some parity of nationality. JamKaftan (talk) 13:47, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the article should note (as it does) that Livermore was born in England, was of an English family, and lived in England to the age of 17. I disagree (as noted) with the wording "an English rancher and landowner". Turn it around and tell me if it makes sense to you: if I were describing an American who moved to England and acquired some land, would it be accurate to call him "an American landowner"?

As to nationality in general, I try to follow the Wikipedia manual of style for biography MOS:BIO. In the section "Opening paragraph", concerning nationality, it says (emphasis added): "Context (location, nationality, or ethnicity); In most modern-day cases this will mean the country of which the person is a citizen, national or permanent resident, or if notable mainly for past events, the country where the person was a citizen, national or permanent resident when the person became notable."

The opening paragraph should summarize what makes the person notable. Livermore became notable (as a rancher and landowner) only after he arrived in California, so it seems more accurate (and grammatically correct) to describe him as a "California rancher and land owner". He became a citizen of California when it was still part of Mexico.

If I was writing the article, I wouldn't mention "English" in the opening paragraph, because that's not part of what made him notable (it would be different if the article was called "Early English emigrants to California"). However, because the term was already there, I tried to find a way to keep it there while improving the description. I don't want to deny that Livermore was English - I just mainly think it's a poorly-written sentence. WCCasey (talk) 19:47, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Deletion nomination

[edit]

Hello, I would like to ask why was the article deleted for the second time from Wikipedia. There are many articles presently on Wikipedia of this type. The subject is quite notable for inclusion(non-notability criteria is not applicable). In addition, the reason to include it in the Wikipedia is that she is the person who did the remix of a superhit song, and she got considerable response. The article content was written in a purely encyclopaedic manner(promotional criteria for deletion not applicable to this). Then, why was this speedy deleted? Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited James Vowles, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Mercedes (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 08:52, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Ken Crawford (Disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Herald 09:55, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Counties added to biography pages

[edit]

Hi,

I notice that you have made several edits to biography pages, presumably to clarify places of birth. However, at least some of the edits you have made are not very helpful.. for example, Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield are not considered to be part of Warwickshire (they are in West Midlands county), Liverpool is not considered to be part of Lancashire (it is Merseyside). These edits are not accurate and are somewhat confusing.

Please could you ensure that the counties being added are those commonly accepted as being the modern ones (I know the structure of counties is confusing).

Thanks!

Shritwod (talk) 20:18, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We are not dealing with historical figures, we are dealing with contemporary ones. The addition of the counties in many cases does not add value and it does not seem to fit in with the WP:UKPLACE guidelines. Shritwod (talk) 22:51, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're quite right, we aren't dealing with historical figures. I can just as easily cite three people under forty: André Hahn ("Place of birth Otterndorf, West Germany"), Toni Kroos ("Place of birth Greifswald, East Germany"), and Gjorgji Hristov ("Place of birth Bitola, SFR Yugoslavia"). In each of these cases, their places of birth no longer exist in the form Wikipedia rightly refers to. What is the problem with the same standards being applied to British people? Roland Boys Bradford was, perhaps bizarrely, known as "Roland Boys Bradford" rather than as "Roland Bradford" thus I have reverted your move. Fiddle Faddle 22:30, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if you are also familiar with the somewhat rare but normal English practice of having a non hyphenated yet double barrelled surname. A couple of my school colleagues were so named. Please be very careful when making such moves that you have checked every avenue first. If there is nothing substantive either way I suggest you leave it alone lest you err by accident.
The surname practice can also vary within the same family. Some folk embrace the hyphen, others drop the pre or the post hyphen name, and others keep both (all, sometimes) and yet do not hyphenate. Even two full brothers may choose to differ. Fiddle Faddle 22:41, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A7

[edit]

Hi. I've just declined an A7 (significance) that you requested (in fact, two). A7 (or 'significance' if you use Page Curation - I hate PC) is limited in what you can use it on. It's for people and groups of people (companies, churches but not if they are buildings rather than the people, underwater knitting clubs, and so on), named animals (like Gertie the Dancing Wolf, but not Canis lupus which is a species) and organised events (but not riots that just happened or bank robberies even though they were planned). Also, for some reason, web content is included. Crimsonseagull.com can be tagged with A7, but the Crimsom Seagull browser can't because you use it at home on your own machine. The game CraftDungeonMine can be tagged because it's online (or would be if someone created it...), but Furious Butterflies can't, because it's an app (or would be, etc). Anything like software, products, philosophies, games (that are played in real life without a computer), or recipes - no go for A7. Has to be WP:PROD or WP:AFD. Complicated? Yes. No-one said Wikipedia was easy... Peridon (talk) 19:51, 5 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This 'artist' probably doesn't pass WP:MUSICBIO, but its speedy deletion, of what is a (badly) sourced BLP from Africa, might be controversial. Sorry to make work for you, but can you take this issue to WP:AfD? Bearian (talk) 21:40, 6 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article Ahmed Kotiev has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one.
