Image of sensor sizes

I think Canon is using the larger APS-C CMOS in the T3i, and T2i. The T1i may have been using the smaller at only approx. 15 megapixels. I don't know if the image on the commons should be edited to reflect this. I will watch this talk or you can respond in my talk as well if you have comments on the issue. I edited the T1i article already. I hope I am correct in doing that. I also added comments in:

Comma

Regarding my reversion of your adding the comma after 'e.g.' - To the best of my recollection, that's the way I was taught it should be, and the way that looks more natural to me. No big deal, however -- if style guides say with a comma is OK, I won't change them back.

Hi, any more info on IRAF?--Joules214 19:36, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Cannabis

Hi, I'd like to invite you to comment further on the discussion Talk:Health issues and the effects of cannabis. If you're concerned that the article has been hijacked by a POV, the only to change that would be to contribute. siafu 22:11, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

e.g.

Hmm, that took you a while - the edit you refer to is almost two years ago! Anyway, I believe I was wrong to revert you without good explanation there, but you are wrong on one count - nowhere does it say on Wikipedia that US style is the default. In fact, it says that in most cases where there is a US-UK national difference, both used styles are correct. —Matthew Brown (T:C) 22:07, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Hello

Hi Jason, Seems like we share quite a few other things in common beyond juggling, I am a Physics PhD also and used to be pretty good at mathematics, before I stopped practicing and forgot it all ;-) --Colin E. 10:28, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

juggling record

What's your source for the 3-ball juggling record? It seems bogus to me. Jason Quinn 00:56, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, you left your message on my user page instead of 'talk', and my user page is one page I pretty much never see I guess. What record are you talking about? Pedant 20:24, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
If you can tell me what the text was that you are referring to I can find my source, I think... I'm not sure even which page it's on. If it was not googlable it was probably from Guinness World Records (Millenium Edition)... these are the ones I have handy:

Yuri Scherbina: One ball juggling

35 pound 4.5 oz ball 100 times (Mount Elbrus elev. 13,800 ft) July 1995

Ahmad Tajuddin: Foot juggling

3 hours nonstop, one ball made of cane (sepak takraw ball) 10,000 times with right foot without dropping the ball September 1996

Anthony Gatto: Most flaming torches

Anthony Gatto, 7 torches International Jugglers Association Festival, Baltimore Maryland July 1989

Most objects juggled

Aug. 7 1998: 1508 people juggled a total of 4,524 objects... European Juggling Convention at Edinburgh Scotland Pedant 18:23, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Juggling Record exposed

this is the edit where the bogus record came from, apparently the only edit from that ip address (213.78.56.215)

For what it's worth 68.183.79.42 is my current ip address, and it will mostly hover around that.

I think it was one of those "Wikipedia is so unscholarly that I myself have added false information to their articles" newbie tests that writers like to use to disparage wikipedia. Personally I would highly doubt any significant bump to that record, even 30 hours, since it is so inconvenient to arrange for witnesses. I once 'devilstick' juggled from 5:30 pm until lunchtime the next day, through the dark night at a Rennaissance Faire, and although there were dozens of witnesses, there was no continuous witness. I don't even think its a record, but my point is, you have to arrange a witness or several, and then you actually have to break the record, so I don't see anyone (with witnesses) going much over 30 hours without it being very easy to fact-check.

Anyway, it wasn't my edit and I'm really really dubious of 79 hours of juggling, witness or no witness, I couldn't even watch television for that long. Pedant 19:08, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Talk pages

Wikipedia is not a soapbox. While you made your posting on the talk page, it is still potentially libelous, as the talk page should not disparage the article's subject. We also cannot say something is "fact" because most people think it. Calling someone a name violates WP:NPOV. Even if most people think it, it is still a point-of-view. Michael 01:03, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

To question WP:NPOV, you should do so on the policy's talk page. Michael 03:56, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Republic of Ragusa

The beef is in the fact Giovanni Giove is removing and changing the article despite reached consensus on the talk page. He blatantly removes all mention of Croatia and Croatian names in the article, he does it other articles as well. He also moved several of the articles without absolutly no discussion or consultation with other users. This is a classic example of vandalism and POV pushing. He was also recently blocked for 3RR. --Joker 13 17:57, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Notability of Vincenzo Romeo

A tag has been placed on Vincenzo Romeo, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. --Finngall talk 21:01, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Unitron, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Using plural in title for HS disambiguation

You have created a number of articles, such as Thomas Jefferson High Schools, in which you have added a plural "s" to have the article redirect to a disambiguation page. I do find the idea clever, but it doesn't seem to fit with any of the Wikipedia standards that I have seem. Do you have any support for using these "plural" articles for disambiguation purposes? User page edit

You're welcome. I'm not the only blind admin on Wikipedia ... User:Academic Challenger is the only other one that I know of. It certainly takes some work to get used to any big site with screen readers, and Wikipedia has zillions of rules and strange formatting quirks to learn as well.

Yes, Australia is a beautiful country. Relatively clean, with a pleasant climate in most of the population centres, and nice beaches on the coast. I've never been to Canberra though. South America is a fascinating place, with the results of colonisation and the history of the governments of each country. Graham87 13:54, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Commemorative_plaque_on_Otto_Struve_telescope.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Commemorative_plaque_on_Otto_Struve_telescope.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 07:22, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Barnstar

Dear Jason,

I noticed you left a request to have a barnstar developed. However you left it here at a WikiProject for articles on awards an prizes. I assume you were looking for WikiProject Wikipedia Awards and suggest you repost your request on the talk page there instead. Many thanks, Rambo's Revenge (talk) 20:33, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Manual of Style

You do realize that the Manual of Style isn't policy? It's a guideline, which permits exceptions and use of private judgment.

In my view, MOSNUM is one of our worst guidelines. It's protected now, and has been ptotected often in the past, because it consists of a handful of editors each warring for the One True Way to do things on Wikipedia (and a few of us who are trying to get even guidelines to lighten up).

Never check the MoS of Stupidity; ignore it, and write good English. If you have doubts on what good English is, there are plenty of advisers who know something; the Chicago Manual of Style, The Oxford Guide to Style, Strunk and White, Modern English Usage and above all the corpus of good English writing on which they are all based. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 20:31, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

My proposal has nothing to do with wither it is a policy or guideline. Nor does it have anything to do about content the guideline itself, as I've already mentioned, or its use. It was about the structure aka outline. And I acknowledge the MoS flaws but think it's better than you are giving it credit for. Jason Quinn (talk) 22:00, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

SmackBot

Because SmackBot deals with over a thousand templates, each of which can be formatted in hundreds of ways, it is necessary to canonicalise templates to make the problem tractable. In particular I made an arbitrary but well informed choice to use the initial capitalised in the template name - this corresponds with the actual name of the template page, and provides a sentence like structure, where most parameters on WP are sentence case. It also provides some consultancy with all caps tokens - like BLP. It's not a big deal and by and large should only be changed when a template is being dated or other fixes are being made. COOOOOOOOOKIES!!! NOM NOM NOM! :-) Jason Quinn (talk) 13:45, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

By the way, in other, sadly non-cookie related news, I just saw your request for a barnstar over on the Typo Team page, so I messed around in The GIMP and made two possible ones.
The templates for them would be {{subst:Typo Team Barnstar|message ~~~~}} and {{subst:Typo_Team_Medal|message ~~~~}}. Sophus Bie (talk) 02:22, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm going to add them to the project page, then. Sophus Bie (talk) 03:07, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Page titles

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Austin Film Critics Association Awards a different title by copying its content and pasting it into Austin Film Critics Association. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other articles that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Otto Struve Telescope.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Radiant chains (talk) 00:43, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Flagged revisions

Hi Jason, regarding your comment on the project page, "if I knew that the debate was coming close to an end" - the debate is a 'very' long way from coming to an end! The media have, as usual, whipped up a storm based on a relatriavely minor technical annoucement - that the technical implementation of flagged revisions was nearing an end. All this does is mean we can now move to a trial - whose scope hasn't even been decided yet. Mteering grades

Not sure I want to edit article. Lazy.
Agree somewhat with your view, although article in general is comprehensive and accurate.
The link at top of section in question is more detailed and may partly answer your questions.
The French grading system is used in Canada and Latin America and generally in Europe.
Perhaps U.S. guidebooks will dump the roman numerals some day in favor of French system. Haven't seen it.
Alaska has its own system that is sometimes applied there.
As you may realize, grades, classes, etc., are most fully understood in relation to each other.
When you've climbed a couple of mountains graded X then you can assume you know how hard X is...and since Y is harder than X, you'll know something definite about Y also...... etc.
There are some other important and more subtle considerations (For example, "sandbagging," or under-rating a route) but that's the basic idea.
Without experience, the grades just won't convey much practical information.
Grandma would probably puke just thinking about a PD (not very difficult) route, and would die on an F (easy) route.
Not really thrilled by idea of trying to "source" these statements.

Proposed deletion of Forth order polynomail

The article Forth order polynomail has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

it's a redirect with a spelling mistake... mea culpa..

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jason Quinn (talk) 14:06, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Unidentified red mushroom in Poland in October 2009.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I10 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a file that is not an image, sound file or video clip [i.e. a Word document or PDF file] that has no encyclopedic use.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. 19-Nov-09: Hi. Wikid77 here. Thanks for letting me know my version of Template:Infobox_musical appeared in those categories. I changed the official docpage to allow bypassing the bottom category-links, by adding a new parameter, categories=no:

{{Template:Infobox_musical/doc |categories=no}}

I suppose most infobox-docpages should have a similar parameter, because it is otherwise not possible to display a typical docpage without linking the categories (and interwiki languages), unless such a parameter is coded into each docpage. A similar (categories=no) parameter should have been added years ago, but it takes us years to discover these solutions (obviously!). Perhaps we could change the coding to automatically omit category-links unless "categories=yes" by checking the template page-name. -Wikid77 (talk) 10:46, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Removed prod from California Burrito Co.

Hi there, I removed the proposed deletion tag rather than deleting the article because it seems to just barely squeak by on terms of notability (the CNN and MSNBC coverage clinched it for me), and a COI isn't generally a good reason for deletion (though it does make an article look worse). Just to note, I've turned Jordan Metzner into a redirect to the article for the chain because he doesn't seem to have enough notability on his own to merit an article. If you still think the article for the burrito restaurant merits deletion, consider bringing it to AfD. Thanks! -- Atama 23:21, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Use of Sandbox

Two quick notes about User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox/Bestor Robinson. The page is in user talk space, not user space, which causes problems with some of the wiki-features if a user wants to find your user page. Also, it's a good idea to comment out categories for pages in user space until you publish in name space. User space drafts should not go in the encyclopedia categories. Jason Quinn (talk) 18:11, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

I didn't understand the distinction between user talk space and user space. Can you explain "comment out"? Can I have several sandbox pages to work on various articles before they are ready for name space? How can I easily see a list of all the user and usertalk pages I've created so I can delete the ones I don't need anymore? Just how do I delete such pages - just erase all the content? Thanks for your help - I still have a lot to learn about all the functions. Jim Heaphy (talk) 20:36, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Band Defaultsorts.

Thanks for fixing this up. It's an assumptin that AWB is making. I am looking at a feature request on this. Rich Farmbrough 07:16 20 December 2009 (UTC).

Hey, I reverted your edit here- galleries are not normally a great idea for high quality articles. Generally, galleries are used to store images that will later be used inline- in fairly complete articles like this, unless it's the kind of article that really needs a lot of images (say, an article on visual arts, or flags) then images should be used inline. I admit that more images may not go amiss here, but it's about finding the balance between images and text. J Milburn (talk) 23:16, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

I believe there is... This page rightly recognises that galleries are sometimes a positive (personally, I generally prefer tables, but there you go) but we do have {{cleanup-gallery}} for tagging galleries. The place for the image gallery on a specific subject is Commons- especially with an article this long, I would hope we could offer all necessary illustrations inline. There was actually requests to REMOVE some of the redundant images in the FAC, but since then some more have slipped in. This wasn't a bad thing, as they were of FP quality. We've also had a few FPCs that failed here, but are still featured on Commons, and are no longer used on the article. I suppose the important thing is to ensure that each image genuinely does add something to the article. J Milburn (talk) 23:50, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Resolving Wikipedia disputes

Jason, can you steer me to the proper manner of resolving disputes about Wikipedia content. In my present case, I question the appropriateness of User:Davodd going through several high school articles on 17 January 2010 and deleting persons he felt were not notable alumni. His primary argument against listing those individuals was the fact that there is not currently a Wikipedia article written about them. I have read several Wikipedia articles where persons mentioned in the article did not have Wikipedia articles of their own (yet, that is - who is to say what is being developed as future articles?). Where/How should this issue be resolved? Thanks for your input. Jlhcpa (talk) 03:55, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Cut and paste moves

Hi. I've reverted your copy & paste move at 1. Outside. I don't particularly care which title houses the article, but as you were advised above, pages should be moved, not copied & pasted. If you can't move a page, as in this case, administrators are perfectly happy to do this for you. That way we don't split the attribution history from the text. If you think the article belongs at the other title, I'd be happy to help put it there, but please do not copy & paste it again. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:42, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Scaptia lata

Hi thanks for contacting me about your Scaptia lata, The picture looks consistent with other pictures supposedly of that species. It is not always possible to identify flies from photographs, certainty with many of the European Tabanids this is the case. The Natural History Museum in London has a lot of Diptera material from southern Chili, mostly collected in the 1920s. I will try to see if they have Scaptia lata there next time I visit them. Did you keep the specimen?

Yes you are correct that I should have a user page - I will give that some thought.

Good to see you too are a fellow Linux user and a juggler.

One would need a head shot of the insect to be sure of the sex, in males the eyes very nearly meet at the top, in the female the gap between the eyes is a little wider. However, I suspect that as it was interested in you it is more likely it is a female looking for a blood meal, I note that it was on a black strap, again females are attracted to black, as black is often a heat source. If these are like the very large European Tabanids, they will be attracted to humans, but will be reluctant to bite when they discover one isn't a horse or cow, and will soon fly off to find a larger meal. Its the little ones we have to look out for! Simuliid (talk) 16:42, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Dominator (drummer). Our verifiability policy requires that all content be cited to a reliable source. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:10, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

The article Dominator (drummer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Recently created unsourced biography of a living person

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Unless the article is a newly created unsourced [[WP:BLP|biography of a living person, you may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If the article is an unsourced biography of a living person, please add reliable sources to the article before removing the tag.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. NW (Talk) 22:24, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Smallest shark

There are three current candidates for smallest shark, and given the vagaries of determining size of maturity in sharks in general, I didn't think this small distinction merited a mid-importance rating for what is otherwise a very obscure and little-known species. But, I don't have strong opinions on this so you can change it if you find it important. -- Yzx (talk) 06:06, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:37, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Chest infections

First, let me apologize for not answering sooner; I have no idea how I didn't see your original message, but I honestly didn't see it until you posted a followup.

Second, a talk page is explicitly for discussion of the article, and not for general discussion of the subject of the article (that's why articles about celebrities don't have talk pages full of gossip and fannish speculation). Template:Notaforum explains this.

Thirdly, this talk page said, and I quote: "it makes you cough a lot n your lungd feel like they are closing up but your breaving heaviley".

That's it. That's all it said. There were no other edits that had any other content.

This is not a discussion about how the article could be improved. This is a discussion -- no, a throwaway comment -- about what it feels like to have a chest infection.

If you feel that this is useful material for a talk page, then by all means re-create the page. Feel free to copy-and-paste.

I look forward to answering any further questions you may have regarding my use of the administrator tools. DS (talk) 15:56, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Layout fixes

Hi Jason Quinn, I noticed you have been removing spaces from section headings on many articles. I'm not sure why. If you notice when a person uses the "New Section" feature, it automatically adds one space infront and one space behind the new section's title. This is The Standard. Additionally, whether the space is there or not, it appears the same when rendered. Maybe I'm missing something, but I think you could better use your time on something else. I would suggest fixing typos. There is a never ending herd of them out there that make the site look less academic. Clerks. (talk) 14:40, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Equitorial room prod

Heh. I just noticed the deletion of that article. (I only stop by Wikipedia every once in awhile mostly) Just wanted to let you know that it was no big deal, I tried to expand that article a couple times and could never really find any sources, I created it when I first started out around here a few years back so I didn't really know the ropes as well as I do now. Hopefully if there was any relevant information it was merged into Observatory or something like that, if it wasn't there already. Anyway, sorry for the length, just wanted to let you know all was well, as I know how the deletion game can contribute to wiki-enemies. Have a good day and happy editing. Article has numerous references and searching brings up considerable modern Web and book reference pointing to this being encyclopedic (a place/thing). Per re-instating the talk page, sorry, did not see a mechanism to do that. Please let me know if there is one. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 15:06, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

I don't think the PROD was a totally bad move, my reason for bringing the article back was because I thought it was a borderline article but it seemed little over the border to just PROD it. Request expand, merge, or a move to Wictionary would by my first move, and another editor also seemed to share some of that opinion (sorry, can't even read the old article to see if that was done). Not to be WP:OTHERSTUFF but equatorial room seems on par or a little better than Boiler room or Electrical room, the former is less known but referenced, the latter two are well known but un-referenced, and there is a case to move them all off per wp:dicdef. Moving photos to Commons

Hi, Liftarn. You recently moved a couple of photos of mine to Commons. Thank you. Anyway, I'm curious how you did it. Did you do it by hand or is there an easier way now? Also, the fotos still exist on Wikipedia. Will they eventually get auto-removed or do we have to prod them? Jason Quinn (talk) 17:02, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

I use CommonsHelper. It's a lot easier than doing it bu hand. Especially if you use CommonsHelper Helper. The photos will be deleted after an admin checks them to verify they have been moved correctly. // Liftarn (talk) 18:37, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

That list has been driving me nuts for over a year when I first stumbled on it. It was a spam magnet and just about everything that Wikipedia is Not (or at least not supposed to be). Since you had quite rightly tagged it with {{Cleanup-laundry}}, this is just to let you know that I've removed all names which do not have WP articles, and heavily copy-edited the remainder. There are more details at Talk:List of tuba players#Major cleanup. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 11:55, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

ELs with 404s

Hi, re this edit - best thing to do about a 404 is stick a {{dead link|date=November 2024}} on it like this, which will categorise it as both Category:All articles with dead external links and Category:Articles with dead external links from November 2024; bots periodically go through those, so hopefully it's been archived and can be revived. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:26, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Re: Don't touch my junk

"You know what's junk? This article." lol Nice. I'm sort of mixed on that article. I think some of the points you raise on the talk page are good ones, but I also think there could be a case that sufficient notability exists from WP:RS. I agree that the term was in use before the TSA patdown fiasco, but I also think a case could be raised that that phrase became widely associated with that whole mess. I would personally rather see if go through AFD than PROD, so that a discussion could be held and improvements could possibly be made to the article as a result. But I'm not sure I feel strongly enough to remove the PROD myself. I'll give it some thought. Thanks for your heads up! — Hunter Kahn 19:21, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Densities, relative scalars, and all that

Hi Jason, It's good that you're bringing some order to things. "Relative scalar" and "relative tensor" aren't terms that are used in the circles I travel in: usually these are called "densities" and "tensor densities" of some weight (indeed, we often refer to "conformal densities", and have a different system for reckoning their weights). But I'll not insist that my own preference is the most common, and you're probably right that calling these "densities" is technically a misnomer. I just thought you should know that the existing article density on a manifold is very close in content to your recently-started article on relative scalar, although it takes more the bundle point of view. Perhaps you might consider merging them? It might improve both articles. Sławomir Biały (talk) 01:47, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

The article Tom Noddy has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 10:03, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry to dissapoint you, but I have nothing to do with User:Malaiya. Next time, double check your sources. Hello, KFChayer. You were part of a routine investigation and were not accused but merely suspected of sockpuppetry. I have now doubled checked my reasoning and it has not alleviated my concerns. Based on the relevant edit histories, I deem it proper to have named the account as suspicious in the investigation. Yet, as the account has been used reasonably for its handful of edits, I will assume good faith and take it that you have been an unfortunate victim of User:Malaiya's activities and unfairly thrown into the mix. Cheers, Jason Quinn (talk) 13:37, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
I authorize you, if you are in that position, to examine my IP address and compare it with Malaiya's. If that is not enough, then my friend, screw you. KFChayer (talk) 23:20, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

I believe I do understand what you did and some of it was wrong. I maintain so even after extra consideration. (Specifically, I am talking talking about the capitalization in "the Moon" by this edit in the Buzz Aldrin article that you decapitalizd several times.) When the word "Moon" is used as a proper noun to refer to the particular moon that encircles the Earth — the planet that goes around the Sun — it should be capitalized, just as "Earth" and "Sun" were.
I am a perfectly reasonable person and it is always possible I have made a mistake. I would have liked for you to defend your edits rather than imply I don't understand them. Jason Quinn (talk) 15:53, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

75.8.78.210 (talk) 17:28, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

The links you provided do not prove your case. But my own searches have shed some light on the disagreement. Your view appears to have been shaped by the AP Stylebook,[6] used by some newspapers. It is however, not the style adopted by Wikipedia Manual of Style. It is the final word on the subject and I should have thought to consult it earlier. My other searches find that there is considerable disagreement on this issue so both of us were too bold in our claims. I hope this helps. Cheers, Jason Quinn (talk) 00:22, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
My, you are presumptuous. My views have been shaped by the sources I cited, not by the AP stylebook, which I have never used. If you had actually read the sources cited, you would have seen that although some state that the word is sometimes capitalized, none stated categorically that it is always capitalized when referring to the celestial body that rotates around the earth. All used the lower case version of the word in their examples.
Oxford English Dictionary:
  • "The moon orbits the earth in a period of 27.32 days..."
  • "The moon has no atmosphere, and the same side is always presented to the earth."
Macmillan Dictionary:
  • "The moon rose above the ridge of the eastern desert..."
  • "the first spacecraft ever to land on the moon"
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary:
  • "The diameter of the moon is 2,160 miles..."
Dictionary.com:
  • "Of course, you do not have to go to the moon to find cold, dark and inhospitable growing conditions."
  • "The Earth's moon is about 240,000 miles away..."
When there is more than one usage or spelling of a word, dictionaries typically provide examples with the preferred usage or spelling. Hence, these seven examples show that these four respected dictionaries believe that the lower case version of "moon" is preferred when referring to the earth's satellite. 75.2.209.2 (talk) 03:30, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

I posted a link to Wikipedia's Manual of Style that covers the capitalization of celestial bodies here at Wikipedia. According to it, when the words sun and moon refer to a specific celestial body they should be capitalized; so, the word "moon" should be capitalized when it refers to the Earth's moon, "the Moon".

The links you posted do not prove your case. This is a grammatical topic where there are competing schools of thought. There is disagreement on the "proper" way to do it. Each newspaper, journal, blogger, and wiki will have its own standard. [For the record, the example "The Earth's moon is about 240,000 miles away..." from Dictionary.com is a bad example. The word moon here is being used in the general sense and is being qualified by the adjective "Earth". It should not be capitalized. It seems as if "Earth" being capitalized goes counter to your argument.] Dictionary.com also has two entries (World English Dictionary and Science Dictionary) in the listing for "moon" that state the word is sometimes capitalized. The Oxford dictionary also states that "Moon" is also used even if they didn't use it that way in the examples. The Merriam Webster dictionary also states that the word is "often capitalized". The American Heritage Dictionary also notes that it is often "Moon". What about other sources? My astronomy books invariably use "Moon" when it refers to the Earth's Moon. These are books from notable publishing houses like Wiley and Addison-Wesley. It appears that the The Chicago Manual of Style says to capitalize when they are used in context with astronomical terms ("the astronauts successfully landed on the Moon")[7] but I cannot confirm this because of their paywall. This is particularly relevant because many planetary science journals appear to use the Chicago Manual of Style and would adopt their convention too.

I have been polite and considering of your view. I have tried to understand it. I do not feel that you have been as generous to me. The unwarranted, unhelpful, and arrogant quips you tend to punctuate your comments with are nonconstructive at best. If you are interested in further discussion on this topic, please feel free to discuss it on the manual of style's talk page. Cheers, Jason Quinn (talk) 16:38, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Adopt A Typo

The Special Barnstar
Thank you so much for working on the Adopt A Typo project. When I started it, I had so much more time to devote. I have often in the last six months or so felt quite guilty that I was not actively maintaining or pursuing the project. You have taken my flare for the dramatic and distilled it for actual value. WELL DONE!

P.S. What do you intend to do with the Userboxes? Majestic PyreMy Speech Bubble 06:41, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I have several ideas with the users boxes. I'm not sure how to accomplish them yet. As it stands, the user just indicates if they have adopted some word or not, and possibly their gender. I think it would be cool if we could also have userboxes that indicate a particular word is being adopted, e.g., "This user has adopted the word 'sunshine' in Wikipedia". In that case, I would also like there to be a host of different user boxes where the icon indicates what type of word or subject the user is taking care of. It would be cool if we had icons for all many situations. Jason Quinn (talk) 00:52, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool office hours

Hey Jason Quinn/Archive 1; just a quick note to let you know that we'll be holding an Office Hours session at 18:00 UTC (don't worry, I got the time right ;p) on 4th May in #wikimedia-office. This is to show off the almost-finished feedback page and prep it for a more public release; I'm incredibly happy to have got to this point :). Hope to see you there! Regards, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 04:02, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, Okeyes for the headsup. I would have joined but I am traveling and without frequent internet access. Maybe next time. Cheers, Jason Quinn (talk) 12:38, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool, Version 5

Hey all :)

Just a quick update on what we've been working on:

  • The centralised feedback page is now live! Feel free to use it and all other feedback pages; there's no prohibition on playing around, dealing with the comments or letting others know about it, although the full release comes much later. Let me know if you find any bugs; we know it's a bit odd in Monobook, but that should be fixed in our deployment this week.
  • On Thursday, 7th June we'll be holding an office hours session at 20:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. We'll be discussing all the latest developments, as well as what's coming up next; hope to see you all there!
  • Those of you who hand-coded feedback; I believe I contacted you all about t-shirts. If I didn't, drop me a line and I'll get it sorted out :).

Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 22:55, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

AFT5 release coming up - help us design a banner!

Hey all :). First-off, thanks to everyone for all their help so far; we're coming up to a much wider deployment :). Starting at the end of this month, and scaling up until 3 July, AFT5 will begin appearing on 10 percent of articles. For this release we plan on sending out a CentralNotice that every editor will see - and for this, we need your help :). We've got plans, we know how long it's going to run for, where it's going to run...but not what it says. If you've got ideas for banners, give this page a read and submit your suggestion! Many thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 16:30, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback newsletter

Hey all!

So, big news this week - on Tuesday, we ramped up to 5 percent of articles :). There's been a lot more feedback (pardon the pun) as I'm sure you've noticed, and to try and help we've scheduled a large number of office hours sessions, including one this evening at 22:00 UTC in the #wikimedia-office connect channel, and another at 01:00 UTC for the aussies amongst us :). I hope to see some of you there - if any of you can't make it but have any questions, I'm always happy to help.

Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 20:43, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

AFT5 newsletter

Hey again all :). So, some big news, some small news, some good news, some bad news!

On the "big news" front; we've now deployed AFT5 on to 10 percent of articles, This is pretty awesome :). On the "bad news", however, it looks like we're having to stop at 10 percent until around September - there are scaling issues that make it dangerous to deploy wider. Happily, our awesome features engineering team is looking into them as we speak, and I'm optimistic that the issues will be resolved.

For both "small" and "good" news; we've got another office hours session. This one is tomorrow, at 22:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect - I appreciate it's a bit late for Europeans, but I wanted to juggle it so US east coasters could attend if they wanted :). Hope to see you all there!

Thanks

for the warm welcome! :) Khballin (talk) 17:02, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Others' userspace.

Hi Jason!

Please stop editing other users' sandboxes. User-space should not be edited by others. Thanks!

Kiefer.Wolfowitz 09:42, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Others can edit other's userspaces. See WP:NOBAN and Wikipedia:OWN#User_pages. You are wrong about that. I am also aware that they usually shouldn't be edited unless there's a good reason. These are not content changes but bot-like fixes to cleanse a maintenance category. As for the motivation and rational to the edits I am making, please see this discussion Category_talk:Pages_containing_cite_templates_with_deprecated_parameters#Non-mainspace entries... fix or not fix?. Jason Quinn (talk) 12:51, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks again for your reply, with informative links.
My irritation was due to an unfounded belief that you were corrupting the harvtxt-template facilities, by replacing the semantically rich month & year fields with a date field. That kind of replacement had occurred before, and I generally reverted it in articles, because it seemed at best useless; it had occurred in articles without harvtxt-templates before (or where it was not worth my time to investigate). I am glad that no harvtxt-corruption occurred. I would think that a template-redesign would be appropriate, rather than script-assisted manual editing. Kiefer.Wolfowitz 19:52, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
No worries. It's good for editors to double-check each other. There was only a few hundred pages containing these deprecated or obsolete tags. That (surprisingly small) number played a role in my decision to fix them even in user space. I felt the pros of having a non-contaminated maintenance category outweighed the cons of a handful of edits to user talk pages or even user talk archives. As for the editing, it's not even script assisted, it's just manual. (I'm a beast!) I was on the lookout for bizarre cases such as harvtxt issues. (So far that only applied to one page, which I skipped.) There's still about 50 pages in the maintenance category. Many of these are more difficult to handle. For instance, some of them are discussions about obsolete tags. A script or bot could not handle those pages. Cheers, Jason Quinn (talk) 20:16, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Not sure which template Kiefer.Wolfowitz has in mind, but for the benefit of {{harv}}/etc. linking, the {{citation}} template has included code to extract the year from a full date ever since it was converted to be a wrapper for {{citation/core}} in February 2007. Although much has changed in the meantime, the year-extraction code operates on the same principle that it did back then: if |year= is specified, it uses that, otherwise (subject to a certain degree of error checking) it pushes |date= through the {{#time:Y}} parser function. For example, {{#time:Y|9 February 2007}} yields 2007. I haven't checked, but I suspect that the other templates such as {{cite book}} have also had similar code for several years. See also User talk:Redrose64#citation and date tags also User talk:Redrose64#day= is deprecated (particularly the Broken reference links subthread).
As regards "a template-redesign" - I take it that you mean that something should be put into the citation templates so that they don't categorise into Category:Pages containing cite templates with deprecated parameters when used outside of article space. The problem is that these templates are already slow to the point that some people now refuse to use them purely on the grounds of speed. To add any more code - even something that detects which namespace they're being used in - would slow them down further. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:03, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
