Deleted?

I'm just curious. As being somewhat new to the Wiki editing side of things, maybe I completely misunderstood the system. But what was the point of us debating and providing evidence for two weeks straight in regards to The Protomen?

That was the article that sparked me to become an editor and since then I've been seeing a trend. Anyone involved on the delete side would never provide any sort of argument, they simply voted per nom delete. I was told it wasn't a vote. Don't get me wrong, I saw plenty of pointing of fingers and sockpuppet this and sockpuppet that.

But what makes no sense to me is the fact no argument, explanation, or evidence was EVER provided to say this band was not notable and clearly plenty was given to show that it did meet certain guidelines to have a home here on Wiki. I'm just curious - and I don't mean any disrespect when I say this, but was it your opinion that mattered all along - not ours? Or was it simply a vote?

It very much seems like this place is based off a "guilty until proven innocent" system. I really believe if you attack someones work it should be your job to explain why it should be deleted. Hello Draxis, thanks for your message. I'm sorry for you that something you spend so much time on has been judged for deleteion. I don't know it it makes you feel any better or not, but your case is not exactly unique - it can happen to new editors and experienced editors alike.

Let me address deletion in a general sense first. We actually start with a presumption of keeping the article. If you want to read through other closed deletions,if it is a toss-up (or "no consensus") then the article gets kept. Articles about people (or people who have come together to form a band in this case) are interesting cases because there are so many people who would love to have an article written about them, or their best friend, or the cool band they saw last week. That is why we have notability guidelines like WP:BIO and WP:BAND.

Another thing about deletion is that people with brand new Wikipedia accounts coming to add to the debate are given different weight than long-standing accounts. As you say, this is not a vote. It is too easy for people to try to "stack the vote" with sock-puppets and by telling all their friends at school "hey, come help me here on Wikipedia".

In this particular case, we have an article that appears to fail WP:BAND. It has already been determined to be deleted by consensus previously. The oringial nominator explained both these two things. Others came and agreed wit the nominator. It is not necessary for them to give long explanations of why they agree with those two points - saying they agree with them is sufficient. The newly arrived editor comments were considered. Overall, no one voting "keep" made any argument that overcomes long-standing community standards (as embodied by WP:Band) and no evidence the band's notability has changed much since the last vote-for-deletion. That is why the article got deleted by consensus.

I hope you don't let this experience steer you away from Wikipedia. Instead, I hope you will take a closer look at our guidelines as to what sort of articles we are looking for. You may want to spend some time editting existing articles rather than taking a chance on something brand new right away.

I did not know there was already an article that had been deleted. However, said VFD was 11 days ago (an eternity in terms of the lifespan of Internet memes) and has been picked up by larger media outlets. I have also included an example of Internet vigilantism that warranted a kept article, the (in)famous Dog poop girl. But at least I knew someone would call for its head straight away. • FYI on this photo ... I saw where you had left a comment on IFD ... the general consensus I have seen from IFD has been that use of a TV show screenshot, corporate logo, magazine cover page, etc, anywhere but on the article for the show, company, or publication itself is not fair use. I could kinda see using it on the College football on television, but even then, it doesn't seem overly relevant to the topic inasmuch as a screenshot of Lee/Herbie/Chris would be more relevant to the show itself.   • I would suggest perhaps (1) reducing the resolution to 400x300 or something on that order to make it a "web resolution" screenshot as called for in {{tv-screenshot}}. You may even want to go so far as to delete the larger version so that someone doesn't revert to it. (2) Remove the image at least from trophy and Bevo (mascot), where it unambiguously is just illustrating the subject of the broadcast, rather than the broadcast itself.     • Hi BigDT, thanks for your suggestions. I agree with you that the connection to trophy is small. Perhaps if we had an article on this specific trophy, but we don't, so I'll remove it. Could you please take another look at Bevo (mascot)? The image is used there in the "public appearances" section and mentions the fact that it is the current Bevo - which we don't have another photo of. If we can agree on these changes and if I replace the image with a smaller one, would that address your concerns sufficiently for you to remove your listing at Images for Deletion?       • I put a comment on IFD referencing this conversation ... I think it would be a good idea for a non-college football person to look at the issue. Please do not insert random pictures of your favorite marching band onto the "marching band" article. There are literally thousands of bands that could have their picture placed next to the opening paragraph and everyone trys to do it. If you wish to move your picture next to an article with context (ie: the flag picture is with the auxillary groups, the high step picture is next to the marching style) please do so, but don't just put random pictures of your favorite band in the opening paragraph.

No problems. After a conversation with W.marsh on WT:DRV, I started notifying all closing admins of deletion reviews on their actions. It happened to me in the past, and it annoyed me, so I made a template. W.marsh noted that people were still not notifying admins, so I decided to look through all DRVs and let closing admins know. Yeah, I've noticed your excellent work closing AfDs, and like me, you don't usually skip over the tough AfDs. • Hello, thanks for your note about Forbes State Forest, Pennsylvania. Sorry I didn't reply sooner - I have been travelling. I did a little searching for a photo for this article, including the use of my two favorite photo sources. The first of these is yotophoto, which searches for free images (interestingly it was created by someone to search for free images here and at commons, though now it searches other places as well). The other is to do a Google image search with "whatever"+.gov The premise is that US govt works are in the public domain. This works especially well with topics related to the US govt, including anything NASA or the USGS would ever have put a hand into. Alas, so far I have come up dry. Recent changes at Celal Bayar

Hi. Thanks a lot for your attention about the recent changes at Celal Bayar, an article I had created but have not been unfortunately watching. I completely reverted the edits made by Ja Volim tebe and also by you, because this person not only removed all the categories but falsified the person's name and the birthplace, as you can check. It is surely a vandalizing.

I agree about the difficulty in getting the coordinates to work. I took the coordinates I initially posted from the independent Google Earth program (I think they may be off themselves), but when they wouldn't work I just used the standard street directions and posted the coordinates. Tomahawk Chop

Greetings. I am not sure how familiar you are with the tradition at Florida State, but it NEVER called the "tomahawk chop" as that has been blasted as being culturaly insensitive. At FSU, it is called the "warchant" you can read about it at the official FSU website here. Atlanta Braves fans use the term "tomahawk chop", but FSU has made it a point to distance itself from such terminology. I have moved the page to correct such error and has tried to add a bit to the histroy aspect of the tradition. AriGold 13:03, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

I checked, and those coordinates are fine. Most of central Oklahoma is at 35N 97W. From the view I got at Topozone, the arrow for the coordinates in the article (35.208522, -97.445944) points to Evans Hall, which is the administration building on the North Oval where the president's and provost's offices are. The return address for the university is 1000 Asp Avenue, a building called Buchanan Hall which houses Admissions & Records and the Bursar's Office; it's about 75 yards east of Evans Hall and roughly 100 yards north of the northwest corner of the stadium. (Can you tell where I went to school yet?) According to Google Maps, Buchanan Hall is at 35.208522, -97.459944 also, but as you take it out to more significant digits the coordinates obviously are slightly different. It's a good target for an unscrupulous vandal, though, say from these people for instance. They don't like us much - can't imagine why. ;-) Baseball,Baby! ^{balls•strikes}

Regarding the Hook 'em image, I left a message with User:Gustavb regarding the possibility of vectorizing the icon so that it won't be distorted when it's used at all the various sizes. He vectorized the pirate image that was a featured picture a few days ago. I was really hoping he could help us with this (or point us to someone/thing that could). I downloaded the program he used, Inkscape, and I'm going to play around with it to see if I can do it myself. I'm glad you like it! I got that picture and a lot of other great pictures from The Valiant Shield home page. That was the only one through a periscope though. The U.S. govt is a great source for photos to illustrate our articles because, by law, works of the U.S. govt (including employees and military people while on duty) are in the public domain. That is one reason our military articles usually have good pictures.

Hello, Johntex. I still don't feel completly confident on the fair use rationale you provided. Do you believe we really need that image to complete the information that the text conveys, that is, the information that Ms. Ireland have become famous after posing for a Sports Illustrated cover? For instance, imdb gives this same information without the use of the magazine cover image, and I don't think imdb readers would feel confused about the matter. Fair use images is for texts that talk about the image (like Lenna or Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima), and not for texts that mention the subject of the image. --Abu Badali 20:22, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello Abu, thanks for your question. I don't think pictures are really needed on any articles at all. However, I think that one is as useful to that article as most pictures here. Her modelling for Sports Illustrated was certainly very important to her career. I see no reason we should not include a picture of her famous 25th anniversary Sports Illustrated cover in a discussion of that career. As I understand the law, the image is legal to use because it is small in size and small as an overall portion of the work. Since it is useful and legal, I don't see why we'd want to take it out. If we look at it another way, we could create an article specifically about that issue and how that issue was important to Kathy Ireland's career. Surely no one would object to the use of the image in such an article. However, there would certainly be calls to merge that new article into Kathy Ireland. The reason is that, according to Wikipedia's fair use policies (that supersedes the permissiveness of fair uses laws), magazine covers should only be used when disscussing the "the publication of the issue of the magazine in question". I'm not sure if just mentioning an magazine issue makes grounds for an image inclusion, as the image itself do not adds crucial information to the article.

An article about the very specifc issue would probably be deleted due to lack of notability. I see the magazine cover itself being irrelevant to the information that "Ms Ireland has became famous after appearing on the 25th cover of Sports Illustrated". Well, some inclusionists would argue that Wikipedia does not have a specific policy that something has to be "notable". They would argue that if the topic is sufficiently important to be "verifiable" by reputable sources then it is necesarily fit for inclusion in Wikipedia.

Some "mergists" would argue that the information belongs in Wikipedia, but that it should be merged into Kathy Ireland or Sports Illustrated. "Merge" seems to me to be the most common outcome of AfD's these days. That is why I think it makes sense to look at this as a hypothetical case where the articles have been merged. The logic path is: (1) the image is clearly fair use in an article about the issue of the magazine (2) the issue of the magazine relates to Kathy Ireland and content about that issue could be merged to her article (3) Regardless of how we title the article ("Kathy Ireland" or "SI 25th anniversary swimsuit issue" or "Depictions of swimsuits on the cover of sports magazines", the title does not change the fact that the picture is going alongside description/analysis of the issue in question.

I think this is on very firm ground not only in law but in Wikipedia policy. For example, WP:FU states "However, if that magazine issue itself is notable enough to be a topic within the article, then fair use may apply." (emphasis added).

I think that the 25th anniversary issue was notable enough to her career to include in the text about Ireland. Following WP:FU, that means that fair use could apply to the magazine cover within the article on Ireland.

Perhpas you would be more comfortable if the discussion on the magazine cover takes up more space within the Ireland article? Johntex\^talk 22:01, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

The fact that reference also mentions yourtube is not relevant. I am not using them as a source about yourtube, I am using them as a source about the award. As to why reference that fact and not others, we should be striving to reference every single fact. The fact that we are not there yet does not mean we should delete references when we do have them.
