Orangeburg photograph

Thank you SO much for finding and uploading that photograph. I had no idea that works published without a copyright notice before 1977 are public domain.

How did you verify that the Times and Democrat didn't issue a copyright notice? If they had, where would it have appeared? I ask because there were a ton of photographs, drawings, and maps published in newspapers about this event and I'd like to be able to add more of them to the article, if they're copyright free. SilverStar54 (talk) 21:13, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi, SilverStar54. Thanks for your message. Everything you need to know can be found in this section of this article. Specifically, anything published between 1909 and 12/31/77 that does not have the name of author, year of publishing, and word "copyright" has lost copyright protection (I would be wary of images taken outside of the U.S. though). ("Works published before January 1, 1978, are governed by the 1909 Copyright Act. Under that law, if a work was published under the copyright owner's authority without a proper notice of copyright, all copyright protection for that work was permanently lost in the United States.") Best regards, Key. --Kieronoldham (talk) 14:47, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
Is that true even when a source is republishing an image originally published elsewhere? (This particular photo was from the AP) SilverStar54 (talk) 15:08, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
The photo, as stated in the linked source, was taken by Dozier Mobley. AP distributed the image across the land in 1968 (possibly to magazines too) and they are an American news agency. As per the guidelines it does not say "Copyright 1968 Dozier Mobley", so as far as I am aware it can be used.--Kieronoldham (talk) 15:49, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
Wow, okay, I think you're right! I didn't realize that, but that's great news. Thank you for taking the time to explain it. SilverStar54 (talk) 20:01, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Please add Yeri Bocoum[13] to the List of kidnappings. Davidgoodheart (talk) 18:13, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
The Wiki. article doesn't specify whom the abductors were. There isn't even a corresponding article in the native language. Article seems to read like a combination of ad hoc, ramshackle clippings. Is it really worthy of inclusion?--Kieronoldham (talk) 21:25, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
Added, David.--Kieronoldham (talk) 22:16, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
Please add Saul to the List of unsolved deaths as his article has listed him as an unsolved death. Please find a source that says why his cause of death is unknown. Davidgoodheart (talk) 19:22, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Didn't he spear himself with his sword? It is in the lede. "Saul in Story and Tradition" ISBN 978-3-161-48569-5 p, 160. Hardly an unsolved death?--Kieronoldham (talk) 22:51, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Please add Donald Shea[14] to the List of solved missing person cases. Davidgoodheart (talk) 02:15, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

Interview with Jeff MacDonald

Just wanted you to know I've obtained (and have been reading) the '86 Playboy interview with MacDonald. We currently don't mention it in our article. (I've been trying to find it for years.) If you think of something from it you think is worth adding to the article.....let me know. I have been reading it and trying to decide that myself.Rja13ww33 (talk) 17:19, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Will do, Rja13ww33. I read that interview years ago (or sections of it) and, from memory, there is little within the article not covered elsewhere, but there may be something worthy of adding to the appeals or aftermath sections. Will have to try and find it myself. I think if a link can be found online, it would definitely be worth adding to the external links section. Regards, --Kieronoldham (talk) 20:05, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
Agreed. I don't see too much not covered elsewhere either. I only got it because I was curious as to his side of the story with his supposed physical abuse of a kid (he was dating the kid's mother). Anyway, if you want to read it, Amazon has a collection of them you can read on Kindle (for $5). It is called 'The Playboy Interview: Killers, Assassins and Revolutionaries'.Rja13ww33 (talk) 21:05, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Please add Milorad[19] to the List of solved missing person cases. Davidgoodheart (talk) 01:07, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
He was the last victim. A Serbian banker called Amantul Milorad. Can't find his age or year of death. Article lede states the crimes occurred throughout the 1920s, but the "span of crimes" was between 1920 and 1930. I am sorry, but I cannot determine whether to place the entry in the 1920s or 1930s section.--Kieronoldham (talk) 07:25, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
