Unneeded blocks

Hi Katie,

Two IP addresses have been blocked by you, which don't show any vandalism or otherwise disruptive activity. See the contributions of the two addresses: IP 1, IP 2. The first was blocked just today. I don't know if you count reviewing IPs among your tasks on Wikipedia, but they should be reviewed a little more carefully to keep from imposing unneeded blocks. All seem to indicate the blocks on the two I just found and mentioned should be repealed.

Thanks. And happy (en.) Wikipedia 10 years!

-- 89.187.142.72 (talk) 00:38, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello 89.187. Both of these are marked as proxy blocks, and specifying the open port. The first of these, the French IP, seems to be part of the JonDonym anonymizer system. See WP:Open proxy for why people should not edit Wikipedia from such addresses. Thank you, EdJohnston (talk) 18:16, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
Now that your IP has been blocked as an open proxy also, by all means come and talk about it here once you get a new one through JonDonym yourself. I mean, that's where you got this one and why you knew about the other two even though you shouldn't even know they existed, much less that they were blocked. Formal mediation has been requested

Formal mediation of the dispute relating to Mercer Island High School has been requested. As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. The process of mediation is voluntary and focuses exclusively on the content issues over which there is disagreement. Please review the request page and the guide to formal mediation, and then indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you agree to participate. Discussion relating to the mediation request is welcome at the case talk page.

Message delivered by MediationBot (talk) on behalf of the Mediation Committee. 16:14, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the proxy-whacking

Thanks for your work blocking open proxies. I've been dealing with an obsessive vandal who uses proxies, and it makes life that much easier when I find you've already blocked them before I can even report them :-) --GenericBob (talk) 10:45, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

You're quite welcome. As I told someone a few moments ago, while I detest the harassment, he is helping us block a bunch of OPs. Hang in there. :-) KrakatoaKatie 23:24, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Blocking of 62.193.225.243

Hey

You blocked 62.193.225.243 for five years, this seems a little excessive as they don't appear to have engaged in any vandalism at all really. I only collapsed some previous warnings as they didn't seem to be related, and there were only two minor ones.

The user doesn't appear to have done anything particularly productive yet, but they don't seem all bad. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 19:12, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Fair enough, I've added the template to the user's talk page. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 23:20, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

120.28.64.74 in open proxy rangeblock

User:Shrumster has requested at that IP's talk page that that IP individually be unblocked so she and other Filipino editors don't have to use the secure server. At OPP the IP checked out good. Since you imposed the rangeblock I have put the unblock request on hold for your input (At minimum, it seems, we could give Shrumster IPBE). Daniel Case (talk) 04:57, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Katie, the anonymous edits from this IP look to be fairly normal edits in the areas popular among Filipino editors. Are you aware of some vandalism from this IP? I did not succeed in activating this as a proxy on port 80. EdJohnston (talk) 05:59, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

The article Nadaism has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for reference on the motto "no faith will be left untouched nor any idol in its place" found only wiki mirrors. Found a couple of minor mentions of the word "Nadaism" with a movement, but insufficient WP:RS to meet WP:V and WP:N

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I wonder if it would be possible to check whether this IP is an open proxy? It made the same edit to John Rambo as did 78.129.250.102, which you recently blocked as an open proxy. Cardamon (talk) 20:45, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Katie, My name is Tom and I am currently a junior double major in Communication Studies and Writing & Rhetoric at James Madison University. For one of my writing & rhetoric classes this semester, we are working with Wikipedia ambassadors at JMU in the Wiki project United States Public Policy courses (WRTC 240 with Professor Cindy Allen). I was hoping that if I have any questions, which I'm sure I will, that you would be willing to be my "mentor" during my time helping out the site. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Hi Katie,

My name is also Katie. I was hoping you would like to be my mentor for the Wikipedia class project. If you would like to look at our class page, search wp:uspp and click on Cindy Allen's class project.

Will you be my mentor?

Hi Katie,

I am a junior at James Madison University. For my WRTC 240 Techincal Editing class we were given a project to work on dealing with Wikipedia. We have to find a page on public policy and basically create our own entire page (which is what I understand so far), but I was wondering if I needed help or guidance about tackling this task would you be willing to help me?

Thanks, Feurerkm (talk) 20:10, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Will you be my mentor? :)

Hi Katie,

My name is Deirdre, and I'm a sophomore student at James Madison University. My Technical Editing class has taken on a US Public Policy Wikipedia project this semester, and I'll probably need some help as I'm brand new to Wikipedia. To find my course page, search WP:USPP, and find the James Madison University: Professional and Technical Editing course under the "Courses" tab. Thank you so much in advance, and I can't wait to work with you! Myersde (talk) 20:11, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

User talk:Matt-eee autoblocked by your IP block

Hi, could you take a look at that unblock request? Is the IP used by this autoblocked user still an open proxy? Thanks,  Sandstein  21:20, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

120.28.64.74

Hi Katie. A request to review this block was recently archived from this page. Given your absence I've unblocked it pending more detail. I hope you are not just checking for open ports. You listed port 80 for this IP in the block message, but port 80 is open for the sole purpose of saying that it's closed. Port 8080 doesn't seem to go anywhere either. Of course I may be missing something, but this looks to me like a typical closed ISP proxy with open ports. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:44, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

I want to beef up the 3D Movie section by turning into a "3D Video Content" section with sources directly from Nintendo about streaming TV shows for both the Japanese and European markets. However the article has some kind of "auto-confirmed lock" on it. How can I bypass this? Can you add me in or something?

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!

A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! Source help

Hi Katie!

I'm sorry that you're sick, and I hope that you feel better soon. I had a question about the sources for my article. I'm editing Corporate Equality Index and the majority of the sources that I'm finding are on the Human Rights Campaign site, as they created the Index. Mentoring students: be sure to check in on them

This message is going out to all of the Online Ambassadors who are, or will be, serving as mentors this term.

Hi there! This is just a friendly reminder to check in on what your mentees are doing. If they've started making edits, take a look and help them out or do some example fixes for them, if they need it. And if they are doing good, let them know it!

If you aren't mentoring anyone yet, it looks like you will be soon; at least one large class is asking us to assign mentors for them, and students in a number of others haven't yet gotten to asking ambassadors to be their mentors, but may soon. --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:06, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 February newsletter

So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.

Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.

Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Thanks! --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:12, 15 March 2011 (UTC)
