Appealing AiroAV AntiVirus Contribution
[edit]Thank you for contacting me. The English Wikipedia community decides what is acceptable new content here and you can rest assured that the multiple deletions of an article are not my decision alone, but the result of a review by several administrators and authorised New Page Patrollers.
Here at Wikipedia we do not have a 'Head of Security' and are not interested in who writes the articles, we are only concerned that articles meet our standards and criteria for inclusion in our encyclopedia. As you have not read the instructions on this talk page, I'm afraid I will not be able help you further. I have also removed your message as being promotional. AiroAV Anti Malware Software
[edit]- I don't know or care about any of that, but the tabular construction of that page is a total mess. I would say that the reason your edit was reverted is because that list is a list of notable providers, and the one you added is not notable. Certainly nothing to go to the talk pages of multiple administrators over. John from Idegon (talk) 02:28, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- OK, I see you wrote an article on the subject. Twice. That's a violation of an important policy on your part WP:AGF. Your editing fits the pattern of a paid editor. So someone pointed that out to you. If your article gets turned down, don't just put it back. Find out why. You've been here for 8 years and you are so overwhelmingly important in your own mind, one would think you'd have our policies mastered. Your article failed notability and was promotional. Rather than tell multiple administrators why they are so wrong, you who have made about thirty edits, why not instead ask them what YOU did wrong? That would be the sensible way to go...at least for us normal people who haven't been anointed as gods by the almighty google machine. YEgad, I hate sanctimonious people, but even so, I'll leave you some links on your talk page to help you figure out why you failed. I'm not Kudpung, and whereas I am sure he doesn't endorse my choice of words, I'm also pretty sure he shares my sentiment. John from Idegon (talk) 02:48, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- Danielcohens, I do share John from Idegon's sentiment. Nobody care who you are in real life or how important you think you are. I have deleted your message again as blatant promotion and if you do it again I will block your account in the twinkling of an eye. As far as I know, Prague is in the Czech Republic which is not inn the Anglosphere, so whatever event you may have attended there it is probably not part of the English Wikipedia. I don't know what people around you have been masquerading themselves as, but there is no such thing as a Wikipedia Head of Security. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 10:54, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- My only purpose of mentioning my credentials (in security) and even going to Hackathon is to ensure I'm not some PR guy cause the majority of people who arrive to both learn and contribute to Wikipedia are techies. My education and work is security related only, but with and without connection to identifying and publicizing vulnerabilities, the purpose is raising awareness and community contribution. Around 7 years ago, I created a Wikipedia for a domino company that I serviced in security and it was removed. Since then, I have never repeated the mistake. I have made various edits but none of the edits had anything to do with PR. Please check my edits. If you see something that is suspect, please educate me and I'll ensure not to make the mistake.
- With no relation whatsoever to this subject, if you look at my previous edit committed 2 week ago, you can see it has nothing to do with PR, rather just updating an existing wikipedia page with international news coinciding with the cancellation of a European country's democratic elections due to violence. The previous one before that was updating that an Israeli prime minister was convicted of crimes. As for this specific publication, I was not the original author. I randomly read an article on the Register.co.uk of the virus using Adobe's Flash Plugin and then started checking out the company. Again, <redacted> for identifying a method to flip on people's webcams and microphones when visiting websites which due to my reporting was immediately patched. As for how and why I re-publicized the Aero company, here are the circumstances. After reading on the Register.co.uk last week about a Mac malware referencing Adobe, I did a Google search which revealed at the top of results a previous publication of the Aero company here on Wikipedia. I noticed the publication was up for speedy-deletion and subsequently erased. To me that previous Wikipedia publication appeared like PR, but I assure you that was not me nor my account publishing. My account here is around 10 years old.
- So was just surprised that I'd be suspect of PR for something where my intentions were only pure. In general, there are various viruses and malware (i.e. Stuxnet ) that have their own pages for both researchers and computer users to reference. Please note, I didn't see this company mentioned a name for the virus/malware so I used Crunchbase to find out more information on the company. Otherwise, I'd have created a page for the virus by its name. But make no mistake, I don't honestly care about the Aero malware company, rather only the significance of using Adobe Flash browser plugins to penetrate peoples computers and/or the manipulation of Google and Bing search results as that activity is synonymous with cloaking and fake news, etc.
- Finally, it's my understanding that on behalf of the USA Wikipedia Foundation, Brian (actually, he's from Canada) is the head of security. I'm sure if you use the Wiki Hackathon Telegram channel, you can confirm all of Wikipedia security roll-outs (for USA and to all the foundations servers globally...) are at his discretion. Furthermore, on behalf of France Wikipedia, Sylvain is the head of their computer servers and security. France Wikipedia (headed by Florence, Slvain, etc) donors list got hacked around 2 months ago and I was contacted and referred them to an external auditing team to protect online user interest. As an admin, I just figure you know the people to confirm.
- As for Hackathon, it's not outside the "Anglo-sphere". The majority in attendance are techies with the common interest of providing a safe and secure platform for users. The majority were from USA, Canada, and Europe, and even found a couple from Israel, etc who design features for Wiki Commons. So not listing hall of fame credentials nor name dropping events or people for any other reason than ensuring intentions. Overall, just found something on Google that I thought would be Wikipedia worthy to protecting millions of users and took about an hour to research and reference. I can accept making a mistake or even suspect of exterior agenda. But if I was a spammer, be sure I wouldn't be taking the time to explain myself with a 3000 word essay. So please don't stress administrative powers over myself cause if anything, while I maybe a better coder than I am a Wikipedia editor, my intentions don't contain a hidden agenda. After all, my last 3 edits over the past 2 years were only about politics and corruption using tier 1 media references. I respect your position as an Admin and again, if I'm out of line, please just educate me. Final words - wish you and all a superior and safe online experience. My best --Danielcohens (talk) 21:27, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- Daniel, I assume good faith in all that you are telling me here, but I am not a technical person, and being an administrator does not require me to be. I can nevertheless assure you that in our disproportionately bloated list of 300 staff and contractors , no such position of Head of Security exists. You may have met a Brian Wolf, who was, until he recently resigned, simply a contracted engineer in no position of authority. His security was so good that even his laptop was be stolen. I will stress again, that while I appreciate any expert technical input you may have made to WikiMedia owned systems, I am neither interested in any hackethon you may have attended, nor in the governance of the French language Wikipedia's chapter or interest group - my volunteer work concerns the English Wikipedia only. I will ask you again not to promote yourself on my talk page, nobody is interested here in who you are. If there is a Wikipedia article about you and it is correctly sourced and passes our notability criteria, that's another thing, but as a contributor it doesn't make you any more interesting or important than me. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 23:54, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- I thank you for taking the time to read/respond and also appreciate the good faith extended. Sorry for filling up your page with such a long essay. Feel free to remove this text from your wall as its behind and beneath us. Btw - You caught me off-guard with Brian Wolf's laptop being stolen lol. Wishing you my best --Danielcohens (talk) 00:34, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
YYYY in Hong Kong
[edit]Hi! You have PRODed various articles in this series viz. 1998 in Hong Kong, 1999 in Hong Kong, 2000 in Hong Kong, 2001 in Hong Kong, 2002 in Hong Kong, 2003 in Hong Kong, 2004 in Hong Kong and 2009 in Hong Kong. The articles of timelines of a country can be easily be filled up with any random stuff just for the sake of filling them up. Sources can also be added. And i assume you know that already. I still wonder why they were proded. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 10:59, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
- So fill them up Dharmadhyaksha, if you feel so strongly about it and it is so easy. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:18, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
Contractor vs employee in the United States
[edit]Since you asked at Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost/Newsroom, my answer became kind of lengthy and I decided to move it here.
Permatemp is a good starting point for the U.S. legal issues and distinctions between permanent employees and contractors. Under California labor law there are even more protections for permanent employees that contractors do not get. According to NOLO, the tests are actually pretty strict since a 2018 state Supreme Court decision, and many employees are "misclassified" as contractors.[1] ☆ Bri (talk) 17:38, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
References
- ^ The worker is free from the control and direction of the company in connection with performing the work, both in reality and under the terms of the relevant contract; The worker performs work that is outside the usual course of the company's business; The worker is customarily engaged in an independently established trade, occupation, or business of the same nature as the work being performed for the company. – NOLO legal encyclopedia, "Are You an Employee or an Independent Contractor under California law?" by attorney Sachi Barreiro
- Thanks for the heads up, Bri. A further interesting point would be the the status of those contractors and/or employees, such as for example, JEissfeldt (WMF) (I'll stand corrected), who are neither US citizens nor resident in the US. I am now more convinced than ever that the WMF flagrantly abuses these laws - nonprofits are notorious for it because they believe their activity as providing a free public benefit will incur less scrutiny, but they are often as corrupt as hell. Problem is, the actual top qualified staff in the legal and financial departments are probably quite honest people, but from C-level down, the employees are lying to the stakeholders and stealing the toilet paper. More grist for an article in The Signpost. (FYI Guy Macon). Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 18:16, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
Are you sure about this speedy deletion? The article was about a broadcast TV show, which is not subject to WP:A7. Phil Bridger (talk) 08:56, 13 July 2019 (UTC)
- Now you mention it, Phil Bridger, you're right, but something strange is happening with the software. It may have been a misclick, but that doesn't explain why I had difficulty in restoring it. Maybe server lag or my connection. I don't think it's notable though. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:21, 13 July 2019 (UTC)
Just wanted to let you know I've sent you an email direct to the email address you use on mailing lists. Your thoughts would be most appreciated. Risker (talk) 15:47, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

- Sorry, Зенитная Самоходная Установка, I can't help. I've never used it. I reference all my sources manually. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 08:54, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
- You don't even use a gadget or anything? You just type the references into the text box? Sounds painful. Зенитная Самоходная Установка (talk) 08:57, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
- I use cite templates, but I created nearly all my articles many years ago before there were a lot of scripts for anything. For the few sources I add anywhere nowadays, I type very fast and I am perfectly at home with Wiki markup. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:17, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
- I created a bot once that allowed the user to create a JSON page by which they could feed into the bot information on how to parse each kind of website; so for example, you could teach it how to parse a New York Times article and extract the author, date, title, etc. and put all that into a citation. It would go through all the articles in the wiki and if it recognized a bare URL as belonging to one of those sources that it was programmed to know how to handle, it would go ahead and add the citation template with those fields.

- Unfortunately, it was kinda buggy (it started doing some weird stuff and I wasn't able to track down the exact cause), and the process of getting a bot like that approved for Wikipedia would probably be complex. And there are some sites it probably wouldn't work well for; e.g. a lot of these liquor sites won't let you through till you tell them your birthdate. Still, it worked for enough commonly-cited websites to be of some use for awhile. If I'd known regex, I probably could've come up with some more elegant code; what I did come up with was kinda hacky and basically designed for a wiki that was mostly quoting from only a few blogs and forums.
- We probably do need some more automated solutions around here, but someone with the know-how has to make it a priority. Зенитная Самоходная Установка (talk) 09:34, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
Billy Hathorn articles
[edit]Looks like I'm not the only one watching Billy's talk page. I've been fighting his massive CCI for the last few weeks, and saw you advocated for speedy deletion at the Daniel walker afd. Do you know what Csd policy could apply to his articles? It would help dystory his CCI if I knew. Thanks, 💵Money💵emoji💵💸 16:02, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
- Money emoji, See WP:G5. Hathorn was such a mess it's probably not sure if he is the master account so some leeway is possible. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 22:34, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

The Mzmadmike CBAN
[edit]Just FYI, WP:CBAN requires (as of last February) that ban discussions be kept open 24 hours. The discussion didn't start until 16:48, 21 July 2019 (UTC), and your close was at 09:15, 22 July 2019 (UTC). It's pretty clear it'll end with a ban either way, but I thought I'd point that out. —/Mendaliv/2¢/Δ's/ 09:22, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
How do I get outdated information from the Government Gazette (Thailand)
[edit]SietsL (talk) 13:32, 23 July 2019 (UTC)At the moment I am busy changing "dead links" of the article "Chonburi Provincial Government". I want to apply for two Thai laws from 1997 and 1999 that have been published by Government Gazette (Thailand). But it is difficult for me to convert the information I already have into a wiki-acceptable reference.
Local Personnel Administration Act, Government Gazette Vol. 116, Section 120a, dated 29th November BE 2542 (1999). On the internet there is: www.dla.go.th/upload/enDocument/2012/6/1_1.pdf. But this website is not safe and is strongly discouraged to use.
Tambon Council and Tambon Administrative Authority Act, Government Gazette Vol. 114, Section 46a, dated 10th September BE 2540 (1997). On the internet there is: www.thailaws.com/law/t_laws/tlaw0462.pdf. But wikipedia may not use this information as a reference.
I will be very happy if you can help me find the right access to the Government Gazette library (Thailand) via the internet.
Growth team updates #9
[edit]Welcome to the ninth newsletter from the Growth team!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
Opening Growth features to more wikis
[edit]The Growth team has existed for about one year. During that time, we have developed several features that we think can help increase retention. Though we are still gathering data to detect scientifically whether the features increase retention, we think that some of the features are ready to be deployed on more wikis that want to experiment with them. If your community is enthusiastic about welcoming newcomers, we encourage you to contact us so that we can verify together if your wiki is eligible.
Then, go through the checklist to start the process of getting these features:
- Help panel: allow newcomers to find help and ask questions while they edit.
- Welcome survey: learn what topics and types of edits newcomers are interested in.
- EditorJourney: learn what workflows newcomers go through on their first day.
General news
[edit]- A new quarter of the year has started, and the team has set our goals for the next three months. The most important goals are:
- Newcomer homepage: increase activity through a task recommendations module. Now that we have seen several weeks of positive activity on the newcomer homepage, we think that the most important thing to add is a way for newcomers to find tasks to work on. The challenge will be recommending the right kind of tasks at the right point of their journey.
- Newcomer homepage: increase feature discovery rate by 100%. Right now, only 20% - 30% of newcomers ever visit their homepage. We want to double that number by making sure all newcomers know how to find it.
- Help panel: increase usefulness through improvements to affordance, search, and UX flow. We have looked closely at data and anecdotes from the usage of the help panel, and we plan to pursue specific improvements to increase its effectiveness (see accompanying image of a feature that helps newcomers find responses to their questions).
- Wikimania is coming up next month, which includes a "Community Growth" space. We hope to see people from all communities there to talk about how to bring newcomers into our movement.
- We have started to deploy features to our team's fourth target wiki: Arabic Wikipedia. That wiki is the biggest one we target, it has a high percentage of mobile users, and also is our first right-to-left language. This will help us make sure that our features are valuable for as many types of users as possible.
Mobile homepage and early analysis
[edit]- The mobile version of the newcomer homepage was deployed to Czech, Korean, and Vietnamese Wikipedias. Now, newcomers can access their homepage from both desktop and mobile devices.
- We have published our first set of data about the performance of the newcomer homepage. In summary, we are happy with the homepage's performance so far. We see about half of visitors clicking on something, and the majority of them returning to the homepage multiple times.
- Because we see positive usage of the homepage, we will deploy several small features in the next two weeks that help more newcomers discover their homepage (see accompanying image of a feature that helps newcomers discover their homepage from their empty Contributions page).
- As listed in our goals above, we'll be starting to focus on adding task recommendations to the newcomer homepage. We'll be publishing early thoughts on this feature so that community members can give their thoughts and advice.

Delete maybe?
[edit]Hi Kudpung, could you please have a look at this recently created school article - maybe delete? The original edits have been revdel for copyvio, hasn't gone through AFC, and there is already a draft for this too. Please let me know, thanks Steven (Editor) (talk) 00:40, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Steven. We generally do not delete anything on Wikipedia unless it meets a CSD criterion or reaches a consensus at XFD. 'Rediredt' is a policy but is often ignored by users, especially those who are not qualified New Page Patrollers. It is most often used where pages are harmless (no COPYVIO ets.) but the content is too little to be useful for a stand alone page and/or undersourced. See what I have done here. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:42, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Kudpung, thanks for replying. I've redirected many school articles to its locality - the reason for asking "delete maybe?" was to see what your thoughts are, which from then I could maybe take this to AFD or something. Could have just redirected it straight away, but the other reason is because there is already a draft which predates the mainspace one - normally when you create an article of the same name, it would say at the top that there is already one in draft. Steven (Editor) (talk) 18:02, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
Talking to others
[edit]Not a personal attack or anything but your treatment of some new users seems kind of harsh. Not that you are being mean or anything but maybe you could be a little bit friendlier. Just wanted to let you know.
- I tend to become a tiny bit less friendly with users who refuse to take advice when all they do is disrupt. Perhaps you could have the courtesy to observe our guidelines. Better still, register an account so we can see on what experience you base your opinions on. Or are you simply editing without logging in.. ?
Hi @Kudpung: Can you please take a look at the Afd and then take at the new Draft:Akhilendra Sahu. Possibly a paid editor who is desperate to get his article back in, or half-heartedly started it and decided not to complete it. I find it exceedingly hard to determine the motives of people without speaking to them. scope_creepTalk 12:09, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
