JPEGs and PNGs!

[edit]

I see you added a screenshot to Super Mario Brothers 3. It's a little blurry. As a point of advice, JPEGs tend to be blurry unless they're of photographs or complex game graphics. PNGs are sharper and tend to make for smaller files. They preserve color in broad swathes, making them ideal for 8-bit and 16-bit game screenshots (but not so good for photographs or games that use digitized photos). However, trying to fix a JPEG by resaving it as a PNG will only make the file bigger, not fix the blurriness, and, in general, just be a big mess. I'd just learned that myself (though I preferred to use PNGs for my screenshots anyway, because they always seemed purdier). ~ FriedMilk 09:27, 2004 Sep 3 (UTC)

Image tagging

[edit]

Hey Latitude! Thanks for all the wonderful images you've been adding. Do you agree to license the ones you've taken yourself under the GFDL (our preferred solution)? You can also release them to the public domain, or give them a Creative Commons cc-by or cc-sa license. You could help us out by going through all the images listed on your user page and tagging each one with Wikipedia:image copyright tags) -- just put {{GFDL}}, or another tag, onto the image description page of each. If you don't have time, leave a note here and I'll follow up on it myself.

By the way, you can change all the image names listed on your user page into live links (to the image description page) by putting a colon within the double brackets around the image name, like this: [[:Image:Moxiecan.jpg]] becomes Image:Moxiecan.jpg. Best wishes! [[User:CatherineMunro|Catherine\talk]] 01:06, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Image tag

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Midatlanticmap.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GFDL, or {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much, Aqua 07:50, Dec 24, 2004 (UTC)

GFDL

[edit]

Hi Latitude,

I retagged Image:46agon.jpg as GFDL. See Special:Upload, where it says

"By uploading a file to which you hold the copyright, you agree to licence it under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License."

I too am curious as to the copyright status of Image:ExtremeUS2.jpg. (I notice someone else has already asked you about this image's copyright status.) If you don't provide source and copyright information for the image, then I'm afraid it will have to be deleted. Let me know if you have any questions. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 19:45, Feb 11, 2005 (UTC)

This pic currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add a copyright status? because I want to put it into Commons. It'll be deleted very quickly w/o any licence... Thanks, Scriberius 20:01, 2005 Apr 27 (UTC)

Trail blazing

[edit]

Please, can you clarify where the symbols presented in the image are most commonly used? In the USA, in Japan, in Europe? Thanks. --Eleassar777 21:26, 1 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not "AT" blazes

re Appalachian Trail; The 'spur trail', 'end of trail', 'start of trail' blazes are not AT blazes. The offset blazes you have illustrated are called 'Garveys' after Ed Garvey, a famous thru-hiker and long time maintainer, who advocated their use. Even so, they are seldom used outside the PATC section of Trail. TJ aka Teej

Optical Illusion

Just came across this image that says you created it so, as part of the wikipedia image tagging project, I noted that you release it into the public domain for copyright purposes. If this is at all inaccurate, feel free to correct it. --InShaneee 19:37, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Southcenmap.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Hi,

as per [2], Wikipedia doesn't allow images which are not usable by third parties. You tagged this image as "free use, provided that it's not used by anyone but Wikipedia". This is effectively not free use, but Template:Permission. Please retag the image as GFDL or similar, or it will have to be deleted, as Wikipedia takes the philosophy of truly free content seriously. Thanks,--Eloquence* 04:10, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

I have retagged this image as having a non-free license. You have imposed a condition that the image not be used outside the Wikipedia, and that condition is against current image licensing policy. Please relicense the image to a license that is compatible with Wikipedia's policies or you will likely see the image deleted. David Newton 10:05, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You apparently created this as permission only. Can you relicense it under GFDL please. Justinc 00:37, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

More image tagging

[edit]

As has been discussed above, images that do not permit use outside of Wikipedia are against current policy and subject to deletion. Please consider relicensing these under a license that permits derivative works (e.g. {{GFDL}}). Otherwise, they will be deleted. A list of them may be found below. Thanks. --Tabor 18:08, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Akakafalls1.jpg for deletion

[edit]

Hi Latitude,

I noticed your image Akakafalls1.jpg is licensed under a license that prohibits commercial use, which I believe to be against wikipedia guidelines. I have placed it on the images for deletion page for others to talk about and decide.

Also, sorry about screwing up your main talk page a few days ago (that IP is me accidentally editing without signing in). For some reason, wikipedia did not upload my full edit, thus effectively deleting most text on your page, and then it would not let me submit edits for several days so I could not fix it or even post to a talk page to get someone else to do it.

Unspecified source for Image:Speck green iPod shuffle skin.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Speck green iPod shuffle skin.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then you need to specify who owns the copyright, please. If you got it from a website, then a link to the website where it was taken from with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 23:16, 14 January 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mushroom (Talk) 23:16, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
