List of presidents of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers moved to draftspace
[edit]An article you recently created, List of presidents of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. - Dear DoubleGrazing,
- I'm afraid I am mystified by the reasons given for your rejection.
- In terms of referencing: while the first and second references for each name are related to the basic information on the organisation's website, the third reference in each section is from reliable published journals and either give the full in-depth published presidential addresses of the presidents listed, or information about the Annual General Meetings that they were elected at and presided over. As may be read these presidents oversaw the discussion of many key topics, for example during the presidential addresses available from the 1900s they speak on a range of serious mine engineering matters.
- In terms of notability the North of England Institute is of significance importance regionally in England due to its role in the 1900s coal industry, and during the late Victorian era was of national importance due to the pioneering engineering work its members were discussing and perfecting. While neither George or Robert Stephenson (of global fame due to their locomotive and civil engineering achievements) were presidents, they were members and attended meetings. Even today the Institute is being mentioned in the UK Parliament in relation to supporting UK engineering (Chi Onwurah - 5th July 2023). Other notable presidents include: Wood, led efforts to significantly change UK law relating to mining accidents and improve safety in mines; Elliot, was a significant engineer and politician; Boyd, established the college that later became Newcastle University; Armstrong, engineered the first house to the lit by hydroelectricity; and Lowthian Bell, built the first factory able to manufacture aluminium. More recently Younger was a highly respected UK academic hydrogeologist with at least 140 peer reviewed articles to his name.
- Other similar notable UK organisations with Royal Charters have similar lists of their presidents including the Institute of Physics, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Electrical Engineers. On this basis the North of England should also qualify. The reason for a separate page was that such a list had previously been removed from North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers for being too long with the suggestion that this new separate list be created instead.
- While the list can no doubt be improved (and I look forward to any suggestions as to how), I'm afraid that, firstly, I do not recognise the critique of the references being as they are (in over 70% of the people listed) both in-depth, reliable and independently published by a secondary organisation (either the journal of the Institution of Mining Engineers or 'The Mining Engineer' journal); and secondly, I do not understand - given the evidence above - how either the Institute or its presidents could not be considered notable, though I welcome more expansive comments on either matter. I have resubmitted for review in due course by a new reviewer. Lemons2019 (talk) 17:56, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
