Cleanup

[edit]

I had a bit of a cleanup of this page. As much as I like stuff, some things were cluttering up the joint.Macr237 03:09, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice article. Welcome to Wiki. I'll put a big welcome thing on your page in a moment. But first I want to give you a little award for the work you have done on the James Squire article. Promises very well for the future. Keep up the good work! SilkTork 12:06, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Newcastle articles

[edit]

Good work with those! I've been making infoboxes for a whole bunch of Central Coast/Lake Mac/Newcastle suburbs so if you see me drift through your watchlist, it's just the standards crew at work. If you have any questions or need anything feel free to drop a note on my talk page. Orderinchaos 16:35, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Noticed your Q'n on OIC's talk page re the mayfield stats. I have checked out the site, and it seems that Mayfield is not recognised as a state suburb by the ABS. You may need to try and figure out the census collection area for the suburb in question, which not even I can find at the moment. Thewinchester (talk) 02:46, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know, I have approached Orderinchaos about this. It is weird!Macr237 02:52, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What's there now came out on 27 June and is the first release of info - there's omissions and oversights all over the place and Mayfield appears to be one of them (you'll find the Lake Macquarie suburb of Hillsborough is another). Last census it took them to November to sort the stuff out, and I expect it'll be the same this time. If you want to get *a* figure (although it's a very tedious way), you can go to Mayfield for 2001, get the Quickstats, go to "Related Information", get the list of CCD numbers, then look up the same numbers in 2006 - however, there are random errors in each AEC publication so adding several together compounds the error. :/ I might make some offline enquiries. Orderinchaos 03:05, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Offline answer - it had the same name as some other suburb (could be *anywhere* in NSW) and will be released in a special release with others in the same situation on 27 August. Orderinchaos 03:16, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Orderinchaos, I hope you don't mind, but I liked your idea of tabs and borrowed them. Thanks for checking out about Mayfield. Oh I started using you grouping of references as well on the James Squire page. Until you modded those other pages, I never knew of that function. Macr237 03:20, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No worries at all - that's how I learned too when I was new, there's no copyright on good ideas in my view. I didn't even know how to use ref tags for about my first three months on here - then again, in early 2006 when I started here, referencing was pretty poor generally. Orderinchaos 03:54, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just so you're aware, I just went on a mad stub-creating spree so there are now articles for every suburb on Newcastle - most of them, however, noting only their formal existences. I got the data for them weeks ago, but only today had the time to put them together. Orderinchaos 03:11, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have started on Islington and am adding to Broadmeadow.Macr237 04:04, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

William Redfern - a convict transported to Australia

[edit]

Hi Macr, are you sure William Redfern was not a convict who was transported to Australia? You recently removed him from the "Category:Convicts transported to Australia". According to the ADB ref. he was convicted of mutiny in 1797 and sent to New South Wales in 1801. He was pardoned in 1803, so would have been regarded as a convict until then. The DAB reference states that "...the sentence was altered to transportation for life." (my italics). If you have evidence that he was not a convict, not transported or not sent to Australia, please provide a reference, thanks. – Diverman 18:40, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I must of been on drugs last night. You are correct. If you haven't reverted it yet, then I will. Macr237 22:01, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No problems Macr, I thought I'd let you revert it; have you been drinking too many James Squires?? :) Also, seeing that you seem interested in Australian history, you may want to take a look at WP:ADB, there's a list of biographies with some work to finish them off. — Diverman 04:40, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, I will take a look and see if I can help out. Macr237 04:46, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and thanks for your update of the above article. However, you need to be careful about what edits you class as minor edits. For example, this edit would not be seen by most editors as a minor edit. See WP:MINOR for more details on when to class an edit as minor. -- Mattinbgn\ talk 01:14, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that I will keep it in mind and take a read of WP:MINOR as soon as I can. I am trying to rewrite the page to prevent it getting picked up by copyright bots, so I am trying to move quickly. Unfortunately I cannot find too much information out there and fear it will get shut down if I can not find other sources of information soon. -- Macr237 01:24, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ahead of you :)

Image Newcastle_CBD_from_Stockton_001

[edit]

I wasn't too happy about the quality either but the Newcastle article's opening image wasn't really representative of the city and another editor suggested an image from Stockton would be better. Unfortunately I went there on two different days and that was the best image I could get on either day. I was going to Stockton on Sunday but ran out of time and it was nice and sunny when I wasn't there. Then, yesterday I was about to drive down to Stockton to try again and as I was leaving storm clouds started to appear so I headed up to Glen Oak instead where it was nice and sunny. I think something is deliberately trying to stop me from getting a good picture but I thought the image I had was good enough. After all, the main aim is to show the city and it does that. Still, if i can get a better one I'll upload it. --AussieLegend 02:47, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm hearing you. It isn't actually a very easy place to photograph. Take a look at your talk page to see the suggestion I have put forward. --Macr237 04:45, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When you're trying to represent something like a city I don't really think shots like the one of Watt Street with Customs House off to one side really does it. I was trying to capture as many of the elements of the city as possible in my photo and I think, even though the resolution isn't that great, it does capture the city skyline and the harbour. Yours is of a lot smaller area but I think it does a really good great job of capturing a number of elements (Stockton ferry, harbour, Queens Wharf, observation tower, Christchurch Cathedral, the Obelisk and general inner city architecture to start with) so I think it would be a far better opening picture for the article. I'll move mine to the gallery. Good work! --AussieLegend 07:31, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Newcastle Vista
Thanks for the compliment, I only wished the full panorama would of worked, Which means I need to do it again. As for your picture here is mine, that appears to be a little closer to town than yours. -- Macr237 09:01, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Out of raw curiosity is there somewhere with a grassed area and a clock tower near a bus station? I have this photo I took nearly a decade ago called simply "Newcastle" and I have no idea where I took it. Orderinchaos 18:48, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like Newcastle train station. The Customs house, which has a clock tower has a grassed area out the front and across the road is the train station with the bus station beside it, but I can't remember how long the bus station has been there. It used to be across from Newcastle beach, but I can't think of the clock tower. Another bus station is the depot at Hamilton. If you have a scanned version of it, send it to me and I will see if I recognise it. macr237_at_gmail.com. You can obviously work out what needs changing in that address. -- Macr237 22:25, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Everything seems sorted out there now. You OK? SilkTork *** SilkyTalk 17:08, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Beer category decision

[edit]

A discussion has been opened on changes that have been made to the existing Beer category system. The changes reverse the decision made by the Project in April 2006. The changes were based on agreement by only two people, and by a discussion that took place outside the Beer Project. There may be some merit in the changes, and to prevent future conflict it is important that there is some discussion of the matter. If you're interested, please see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Beer#Brewery_cats. SilkTork *YES! 15:50, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Hill and stuff

[edit]

Funnily enough, I only put The Hill back on my watchlist yesterday. I was bored so I was looking at articles I had edited in the past and the first thing I noticed was that silly claim about property values. I put the article on my watchlist intending to update it later on. Your tag was what prompted me to update it. It's a fairly simple process for me now as I developed a template/cheatsheet while updating the Port Stephens Council related articles. I just change a few things and voila! (sort of) I think the obverse photo of the tower is the best for the article but I'm going to leave it for now as the images you've added look like a good start for a section on prominent landmarks in the area so I'm going to do a bit of research first. The seems to have quite a few landmarks compared to other suburbs. Did you know that Nesca Park used to be a dam? My mother nearly drowned there.

As for your argument with you, I found it quite interesting. It answered a few questions that I've asked over the years. --AussieLegend (talk) 11:34, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
