Deletion of talk pages

Hi! When deleting files which have been moved to Commons, note that WP:CSD#G8 states that the talk page is not to be deleted. Therefore, File talk:35 Dead Trees copy.jpg (and others) shouldn't have been deleted. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:57, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

Are you sure? WP:F8 says nothing about keeping a file talk page after the file is deleted, and the G8 wording is confusing; it implies that the en-WP version of Commons files should be kept also (in which case we wouldn't have that F8 backlog :-). All the best, Miniapolis 21:16, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
I agree it's a bit confusing.
Images which are available on Commons should be deleted under F8 (not G8).
If there is a textual file information page but no file, then the file information page qualifies for deletion under G8. However, the file information page should not be deleted under G8 if there is a file on Commons with the same name. In that situation, F2 should be used instead. Local file information pages should not be deleted at all if they contain a couple of templates such as {{Featured picture}} - see WP:CSD#F2 and WP:CSD#F8. When WP:CSD#G8 talks about 'image pages' for files on Commons, the section probably means that you should use F2 or F8 instead, if one of those applies. However, the wording is unclear.
It says that 'image pages or talk pages for images that exist on Wikimedia Commons' so the restriction applies to both 'image pages' and to 'talk pages'.
Also note that {{Now Commons}} contains a big warning telling that the talk page is not to be deleted if there is a talk page. This warning message is only shown if the name on Commons is different to the name on Wikipedia, though. Compare File:Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite - 2012 reproduction.jpg (different name on Commons) with File:A Male Tiger barb.png (same name on Commons). --Stefan2 (talk) 21:32, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanations, and I'm glad we agree that the G8 wording is unclear :-). I knew about keeping file information pages with the featured-picture tag, but F2 seems to be more of a fixing-a-mistake criterion and the warning on {{Now Commons}} applies to files which shouldn't have been moved. I defer to your experience, though. All the best, Miniapolis 22:36, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

Leading a lap means he crossed the start/finish line first on a particular lap, while the "lead lap" refers to the driver being on the same lap as the leader (i.e. the leader has not lapped him). Is there anything you want me to do before removing the hidden notes? Also, if you have any other questions, feel free to let me know and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks, --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 10:54, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Okay; I'll try to explain that in the sentence. I didn't know what it meant, so other general readers may not know either. Thanks for the explanation, and I should finish the copyedit tomorrow. All the best, Miniapolis 13:49, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
That seventh-place was in the All-Star Race, which is an exhibition race and not an official points race. --Bentvfan54321 (talk) 01:44, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
Thought that might have been the case, and I'll clarify it tomorrow. I'm running a little late, since we had to take advantage of good weather to do some outdoor work today and the New York Mets are playing their first postseason in nine years :-). Congratulations and welcome to the arbitration clerk team!

Hi Miniapolis. We have added you to the list of clerks and subscribed you to the mailing list (info: WP:AC/C#clerks-l). Welcome, and I look forward to working with you! To adjust your subscription options for the mailing list, see the link at mail:clerks-l. The mailing list works in the usual way, and the address to which new mailing list threads can be sent is clerks-l@lists.wikimedia.org. Useful reading for new clerks is the procedures page, WP:AC/C/P, but you will learn all the basic components of clerking on-the-job.

New clerks begin as a trainee, are listed as such at WP:AC/C#Personnel, and will remain so until they have learned all the aspects of the job. When you've finished training, which usually takes a couple of/a few months, then we'll propose to the Committee that you be made a full clerk. As a clerk, you'll need to check your e-mail regularly, as the mailing list is where the clerks co-ordinate (on-wiki co-ordination page also exists but is not used nearly as much). If you've any questions at any point of your traineeship, simply post to the mailing list.

Lastly, it might be useful if you enter your timezone into WP:AC/C#Personnel (in the same format as the other members have), so that we can estimate when we will have clerks available each day; this is, of course, at your discretion. Again, welcome! Regards, L235 (t / c / ping in reply) 02:02, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

Welcome to the clerks team, Miniapolis! Liz Read! Talk! 17:39, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, both of you; I'm plowing through the procedures :-). All the best, Miniapolis 17:43, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

Copy Editing

Hai, this Indian film article Loham needs copy editing for grammer and writing style. Previously submitted for GA but failed due to language problem. See Talk:Loham. I invite you to help a hand on it.--Charles Turing (talk) 12:54, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Please see the top of this page, and list it on the Guild of Copy Editors requests page. Miniapolis 13:14, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks

Ash Crimson, the article I asked you to copyedit, has become a GA. Thanks for the help. Regards.Tintor2 (talk) 17:30, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Congratulations, and thanks for letting me know! Good luck with FA (if that's where you're headed :-)) and all the best, Miniapolis 17:35, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. Still, I'm not planning a FA review due to my poor English. There is another article I nominated for GA, K', but it was copyedited back in November 2010. Could you try giving it a look to see if the prose is okay? Regards.Tintor2 (talk) 18:26, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
Sorry—I'm busy with another article now, but list it on WP:GOCE/REQ and I (or someone else) will get to it. All the best, Miniapolis 19:24, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Writer's Barnstar
For all the good work that you do for the encyclopedia. I was happy with how you handled the situation with Karel; sometimes language barriers can make interactions a bit difficult. During that discussion, it struck me that hard work and dedication can be undone with the click of a button. So, this is to let you know that your peers value your effort and contributions. We hope to learn more from you!-- MarshalN20 Talk 19:37, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
I fully agree with this barnstar for you, Miniapolis - you sure know how to smoothen up texts in an elegant way - so I hope you keep holding the reputation of the GOCE high. I must admit my undo-reaction was pretty allergic, and currently I am busy with re-incorporating the lucid edits you made in the Belgium NFT text. Kareldorado (talk) 19:56, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, both of you; we all make mistakes, and the important thing is to learn from them. It's comforting to know that (unlike RL) nothing here on WP is irrevocable :-). All the best, Miniapolis 20:28, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 5

Newsletter • October 2015

Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

We did it!

In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.

Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.

Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.

The work continues!

There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.

How can the Wikimedia Foundation support WikiProjects?

The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.

Until next time,

New religious movements

Ended up on the arbcom talk page.... Maybe not where it was meant to go? (The arbcom talk pages are a maze of twisty passages, all the same. )

All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 23:50, 26 October 2015 (UTC).

Hi, Rich. Whoever wanted the motion archived after it didn't pass (I forget who) said to put it there, perhaps because of the multiple cases involved. I'm new at this, though, and hope I didn't misunderstand :-). All the best, Miniapolis 02:18, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
