Copy-pasting from your work area
[edit]Hi, try again your Swan Hills history addition, but copy the source (i.e. when editing) not your page as viewed. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 15:44, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
- Oh I see your using the visual editor, so I'm not such how that works for copy-pasting work, if you want I can do it for you, or if you want to do it yourself to learn how then that's cool too. I'll swap to the visual editor and play to see if I can advise more. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 15:48, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
So that's what I've done. I went through and tried to re-add all the sources, but now I have a conflict, so I'm not sure what to do...--MissusK (talk) 15:52, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry you may have had the conflict because I reverted the first attempt to make it a clean start, so just try again. I just tested and copy-paste works with both the visual edit (just 'edit' tab) or the 'edit source', so as long as you do the same (either edit or edit source) on both your original work and the target it should work. Oh and yes it appears a lot to learn at first, but it does not take long to learn the basics, but I'm still learning new bits (especially policies and guidelines) after doing this for years :) KylieTastic (talk) 15:56, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
Do I copy the references section too, or will that carry over from the tags?--MissusK (talk) 15:58, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
- No the target article already has a reference section and tag, so just the main history section and title, and the references will magically appear in the ref section. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 16:01, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
It worked! Thank you so much. :) --MissusK (talk) 16:09, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hi, another little hint: you should have got "mentioned" notifications when I responded on other pages. This is because I used your user name in the post like such as [[User:MissusK|]] or {{User|MissusK}}, when a user page link is included and the post signed (i.e. ~~~~) in the same single edit it generates a notification, unless the user has turned them off (most don't). In this case I was watching so I still saw your replies (but many do not watch pages, or not for long, as you get inundated with change notifications). It's a pity they haven't got the visual editor working for talk pages (yet), as it must be a bit confusing to have to swap to the source editing and mark-up, but hopefully it makes sense. All the best KylieTastic (talk) 16:35, 5 August 2017 (UTC)
It's all very confusing! I haven't even begun to figure out the source editing but was wondering about the difference between alerts and notices. Thanks for explaining this to me (I think I'll have to read it a couple of times). --MissusK (talk) 16:39, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Swan Hills has been reverted.
Your edit here to Swan Hills was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove links which are discouraged per our external links guideline. The external link(s) you added or changed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GybB2syMx8) is/are on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. If the external link you inserted or changed was to a media file (e.g. a sound or video file) on an external server, then note that linking to such files may be subject to Wikipedia's copyright policy, as well as other parts of our external links guideline. If the information you linked to is indeed in violation of copyright, then such information should not be linked to. Please consider using our upload facility to upload a suitable media file, or consider linking to the original.
If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other, constructive, changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 19:13, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hi again, I reverted the bot and fixed the issue it picked up however note one of our policies is Wikipedia:External links that discourages direct inline external links. Generally it's best to never use inline external links, only in a separate external links section is on subject. Readers don't expect to click on on blue link to go to an organisations website, just other articles. If a place like "Swan Hills School" does not have its own wiki page, then you decide if using the link as a ref is valid source for the article. For instance in this case yes it shows the school exists in Swan Hills, if however if was an article about "Person XYZ went to ABC school" then you would only add the link as a yes if it showed XYZ went, not just that the school existed. Hope that makes sense. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 19:28, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi Kylie, It does, sort of. I guess I should just always cite external links rather than make them direct? (You're so awesome to be jumping in to help like this - if you're getting an update every time I hit 'save', you could be going crazy! I keep having to fix/add. Hopefully, I'll get better at it.) --MissusK (talk) 19:39, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- Actually I wasn't watching your editing (that would be creepy, and there is deliberately no automated way for someone to do that), nor was I watching the Swan Hills article anymore, but I still had a watch still on this page for this sort of thing... so noticed the bot posting the notice. We have an issue sometimes keeping new editors as all the polices, guidelines, bots etc can scare people off, so some of us old-timers will keep an eye out for a few days to try help out. In general talk page 'stalking' is considered ok, but user stalking is considered harassment. However like many I regularly delete most of my watchlist to minimise m:Wikistress so please just ask if you need any help. All the best KylieTastic (talk) 19:57, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
Ah, that makes sense. I love that there's a page on Wikistress! For now, I'm enjoying it, but messages like the above can be a little frustrating. However, I love that there are such safeguards and regulations, and even more that there are people like you around to help! Hopefully one day, I'll be able to pay it forward. Cheers! --MissusK (talk) 20:02, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
