PeeJay Insists on Using a Sponsor Name Instead of Generic Name for Venue of 2024 Summer Olympics Basketball Tournament articles.

[edit]

I am well aware of the no-commercial-sponsor-names policy for Olympic host venues. There was no need for PeeJay to have reverted my edits, erasing all mention of Bercy Arena and insisting on only using Accor Arena, which is a sponsored name. I accidentally used an old revision when trying to revert PeeJay because I was so mad at him for reverting my edits after about a minute or so. Can you reason with him about this, because I don't want to be deadlocked into an edit war? Jim856796 (talk) 12:57, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, however the arena was officially called Bercy Arena only in 2015, and since 2015 (and finally 2020 with the current name) it has been associated with Accor. Anyone who inputs Bercy Arena into the search box gets redirected to the Accor Arena page, so I don't think it makes much sense to use Bercy Arena at that point, although I am aware (from my youth) that before 2015 it was always called Bercy Arena by the people and the TV commentators. Would have been nice if someone had tagged me in this chat. The reason the name "Accor Arena" is used in that article is because that is the name of the article on Wikipedia. We are not beholden to the IOC's draconian rules about sponsorship. The fact that they refer to the arena as Bercy Arena for this tournament is noted in the article, but there's no reason to pipe the links when the arena is generally known as Accor Arena. Furthermore, why only change the infobox to say Bercy Arena? At least be consistent, @Jim856796. – PeeJay 09:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PeeJay: I did insert some hidden text in the infobox after my last edit to make sure no one changes the Bercy Arena mention back to that same arena's sponsored name (Accor Arena) on the Basketball at the 2024 Summer Olympics articles. If you, PeeJay, are going to insist on the generic name being completely scrubbed out of those articles in favor of the sponsored name no matter how many times I demand that you stop such omissions and just stick with the non-sponsor name, then maybe it's best to file a Request for Comment to see if an uninvolved party comes up with a solution. Any time I get dragged into an edit war, it's grounds for agitation. How come you haven't made a similar change at the Gymnastics at the 2024 Summer Olympics article (Bercy Arena is also hosting Artistic Gymnastics and Trampolining at this same Olympics)? I am not asking you to actually do so, however, because it will only worsen this problem. Besides, the French counterpart is named Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy (the name it originally opened with) instead of the current Accor Arena. Jim856796 (talk) 16:28, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jim856796: I have no interest in the gymnastics, but thank you for bringing it to my attention. By the way, the "generic name" hasn't been "completely scrubbed out of those articles". If you read the opening paragraph of each one, there is a full explanation of the naming situation. The Wikipedia article is at Accor Arena, so why show anything else? We are not beholden to the IOC's sponsorship rules. – PeeJay 16:41, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PeeJay:: I would prefer it if we keep the generic name on those Olympic-event articles and no-one changes it to just the sponsor name, on both the infobox and the lead section, and nobody gets dragged into an edit war. Otherwise, Request for Comment it is. Jim856796 (talk) 22:13, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
