Speedy deletion of Phil burnstein:sandbox

[edit]

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. — NovaDog(contribs) 01:24, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make test edits, you can use the main sandbox (WP:SAND). If you want a sandbox for yourself, you should make a page in your namespace. To do that, you create a page at User:Phil_burnstein/whateverpageyouwant. For instance, to make yourself a sandbox, you might want to make a page at User:Phil_burnstein/Sandbox. Thanks, and enjoy editing Wikipedia :) — NovaDog(contribs) 01:26, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, you probably accidentally typed in five tildes ~~~~~ instead of four ~~~~. Five tildes just gives you the date, four tildes give you the username and the date. Three tildes just give the date. — NovaDog(contribs) 01:36, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Eligibility for Project membership

[edit]
Of course not, WikiProjects are never limited to a certain racial, ethnic or religious group. Only a handful of the project's members are Palestinian anyway. Just add your name to the list. Salaam/Shalom! --Al Ameer son (talk) 17:29, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Phil,

As Al Ameer Son says, the Wikiproject is not limited to Palestinians, so of course you can join. To answer your other questions, according to the Palestine Liberation Organization definition for the Palestinian people, any Jew who is a descendent of someone who was resident in Palestine prior to what they call the "Zionist invasion" (which most date to the signing of the Balfour Declaration in 1917) is considered to be part of the Palestinian people. Of course, identity is self-defined and cannot be imposed on anyone, so you would have to think of yourself as Palestinian to qualify as one. :) You might want to read two articles that cover some aspects of people in your situation - one is Palestinian Jew (which needs work actually) and the other is Arab Jew#Palestine. Anyway, I, as a self-identifying Palestinian whose family roots in Nazareth go back centuries, but who currently holds Israeli citizenship, would be very happy to count you among our people, if you felt that that's who you wanted to identify with. :) Welcome to Wikipedia! Tiamuttalk 17:47, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Phil,

I was deeply moved by your comments on my talk page. I too have struggled for many years with the issue of identity and have come to similar conclusions regarding its mutliple layers. It is quite true that I chosen to privilege my Palestinian identity over the many others, and that has been a conscious choice, one that developed over time for many reasons too numerous to explain here.

Funny you would mention the Jerusalemite identity. I once wrote an article on Jerusalemites which was deleted and merged to Demographics of Jerusalem. What I found most beautiful about most of those who identified as Jerusalemites (in Arabic, qudsi, or loosely "one who lives in the sacred place") was the consciousness of the multiplicity and plurality of the inhabitants of the city and its culture, which was widely celebrated amongst those who proudly claimed it as their identity. Your sentiments follow in that fine and proud tradition.

About the Wikiprojects here, there is one in which you would not have to choose between Palestine and Israel. I forgot to mention it to you at the time (to be honest, I keep forgetting the link because of its length and only manage to find it when it appears on my watchlist), but here it is now: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Israel Palestine Collaboration‎. I think it might be the perfect place for you to start, since you are obviously interested in collaboration on subjects related to both. I do hope you will join us there. I also sincerely hope that one day you will be able to return to Jerusalem, without having to make a choice between what are at present, two rather mutually exclusive identities. With respect, Tiamuttalk 23:54, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just saw your beautiful and brief message in reply now. I have no doubt that one day that hope will be fulfilled for all those who truly do hope for it. Where there's a will, there's a way, my brother. Glad to see you joined the Wikiproject as well. Look forward to seeing you around town. :) Tiamuttalk 01:45, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish commentaries on the Bible

[edit]

Thank you for rewriting this section. This was one of my early contributions to Wikipedia back when I had nothing to do. I picked it up from a "to do" list to convert from the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1913. I had many compunctions about it afterward! Not the least of which is whether it would be better combined with one of the other Jewish topics in a similar vein. Anyway, good luck! Student7 (talk) 12:22, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just one comment on your rewrite (I did make a few corrections, see the history page, hope you don't mind) - have you thought about using the {{Cite book}} template for the books that you are using as references? I think that would be a great improvement. – ukexpat (talk) 17:15, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Phil!

[edit]

Regarding your question, I usually say "Ramadan karim" (lit. "Generous Ramadan") or "Ramadan mubarak" (lit. "Blessed Ramadan") during the fasting period itself I don't know what people say in English, but you could probably say "Happy Ramadan" (for sure at the end of the fasting period, during the celebrations, this would be perfectly fine and I don't think anyone would be offended by its use prior, though I could be wrong.) We also say the same greeting said on Christmas and on birthdays during Ramadan, (it's the kind of catch-all holiday greeting) which is "Kol sini wa inta salam" ("(May) every year (find) you in peace.") When speaking to a woman, you would say, "Kol sini wa inti salmi." (The endings of "you" and "peace" changing to reflect the feminine.) I hope that answers your question. Happy days! ;) Tiamuttalk 10:00, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To get a list of all subpages of a page, use Special:Prefixindex and type the parent page name followed by a slash. For example, for all subpages of User:Example, type User:Example/ in the search box and hit Go: Special:Prefixindex/User:Example/

As to why, it is an HTML feature: basically HTML will not display more than one space character. Jbarta used non-breaking spaces, another way you can do the same is with the {{pad}} template and specify the number of spaces. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 12:45, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Primary Notability Criterion
An article's subject is notable if it has been the subject of non-trivial published works by multiple separate sources that are independent of that subject itself.

Wikipedia is not a directory. It is an encyclopaedia. It is notability that stops Wikipedia from becoming a directory instead of an encyclopaedia.

Using the following code: This is a { {pad|6em} } padded sentence.

Will produce: This is a......padded sentence.

Dear Phil, Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions, and also for the additional work you put into the article itself. Suddenly an editor with a cause celebre (Yisroel Ber Odesser) appeared out of nowhere; I appreciate your responding to his comments on the talk page. I have learned much more about what makes a better article just by asking for a peer review! If I can ever help you out on an article, please let me know. help

[edit]

{{helpme}} I want to take the current Jewish commentaries on the Bible article and make it a subpage of itself. I have its rewrite in my sandbox and I want to copy it to Jewish commentaries on the Bible. I've never done this before. Phil_burnstein (talk) 15:53, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Simply copy and paste. To create a new subpage, such as Jewish commentaries on the Bible/subpage, all you have to do is go to the non-existent page and create it. That easy. Exactly the same way you created your sandbox. Hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else. --Chasingsol(talk) 15:59, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

SETI effects

[edit]

Hi Phil, your question included what SETI lacks might affect theology but seemed to be glossed over in the science of it. I was wondering what your thoughts on that might be? sorry forgot to log in, it's me, Julia Rossi (talk) 03:12, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply Phil. Okay, I will say more in the next few days. It's a nice structure btw. Julia Rossi (talk) 07:33, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You surely didn't mean to do this? See [2] - it's in article space if someone hasn't deleted it by now. dougweller (talk) 09:41, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure that's any better, what are you trying to do? dougweller (talk) 10:33, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
And it has no article history, which it should have if it is an old article. dougweller (talk) 11:10, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see, ok, I've made it a subpage to the article's talk page, which is a logical place for it. It was in main article space as a standalone article, which is not what you or anyone else would want. I've also fixed the link you put on the talk page. dougweller (talk) 13:22, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rebele, here you added some verbiage about the French word "eshtordishon". What were you referring to, precisely? Tomertalk 20:20, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All respect to Rashi, but he is not an expert on French. Unless we can figure out what French word he's referring to precisely, keeping "eshtordishon" (a word that, with that spelling, does not exist in French, nor can I think of one that would be pronounced that way but spelt somehow else) in the article (especially w/o saying it's from Rashi) is dubious at best. Tomertalk 14:13, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I'm quite familiar with Rashi, his writings, and the conditions of the Jewish communities of the area at the time. The fact remains that saying that Rashi wrote that eshtordishon was a French equivalent (apparently meaning "astonishment") of a Hebrew word in B'reshith, leaves us with little information other than the apparent fact that a word has gone missing from French sometime in the past millennium. While my French is far from fluent, the only words that are coming to mind are things like "extradition", and others which have no plausible connection with a meaning of astonishment. In light of your complaint that Almost every post above consists of two parts, talk about the articles and ad hominun attacks about the authors. Unless you know enough about an editor to write a biographic article, don't mention him, I wondered if you could look at these, and see if you feel you can counter sign it?
