DYK for Carnegie Free Library (Petaluma, California)

Weather

Things are back to normal at home, thanks. We lost power Friday night, and were down for almost two solid days...it came back on Sunday night, just in time for me to get ready for work. The office is fine - doesn't seem to have lost power at all. I did manage to get to the library on Sunday to use the internet.

I've never seen anything like it - I was at the gym when the storm hit, and it was insane. There's a fair bit of damage in my neighborhood (we abut a small county park); nobody's home seems to have been hurt, but a number of trees were taken out. One fell on the tennis court fence. I have a couple of pictures (of course :-) ). Getting out of the house on Saturday was nuts - I went up to Pentagon City Mall, which is usually about a half-hour, and it took me a good hour-and-a-half, between traffic and other insanities. I got two jackets out of it, though, so it wasn't a wasted trip.

Doesn't seem to be any visible damage in Southwest DC, near as I can tell. Most of the trouble's in the tree-lined areas. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:46, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Well most of the lights I saw worked - I live near Route 1, and I understand some of the ones there were out, which may have caused the snarls that I saw. But there have been questions about both emergency services and some of the local power companies; PEPCO is still in people's bad books after some tomfoolery last year. I'm just glad we have Dominion Power. :-)
Cell phone service was off Saturday, too; I tried calling six locations of one of our local chains, and five of them - half of Fairfax County - had no phone service. And I know for a fact that at least one was open; I went there. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:00, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Marina Grande, Capri may interest you.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:28, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Can you recat the main category with appropriate entries for Category:Buildings and structures in Capri?♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:03, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Nice one. Between us we've improved coverage considerably! A lovely island, one too many tourists though.. I'm thinking of haivng a mass stubbing session or two in the next few days as 4 million articles approach, it feels right. I got bored of the GAs LOL!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:18, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Tomorrow I hope.. Piazza Umberto I looks DYK potential too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:43, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

No rain yet but its extremely dark for 4:40 pm. Luckily Wimbledon now have a roof should the heavens open!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:41, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, been watching the tennis at the same time! It does need proof reading though, can't recall if you speak fluent Italian or not, but I asked Ipigott to proof.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:19, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Excellent, good work on the churches too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:25, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Nommed Marina Grande, Capri and Chiesa di San Costanzo as one. Piazza Umberto I needs a bit more for DYK still I think, perhaps Gilderien can take care of it.

Lyons Demesne may interest you, more here, a duel with Daniel O Connell apparently. Also Glevering Hall needs a major copyedit and revamp to be DYK worthy. Benacre Hall needs more sources like this and a copyedit. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:06, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

You probably won't have time what with the Capri churches as well, but Téréba Togola might interest you.. more here and a wealth of GB hits.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:55, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

I nommed Glevering with you. Only needs a copyedit. Hope that's OK. Thanks, the mews is the house opposite it, you can see it on google maps. Heh if you have time to add the Daniel o Connell to the Lyons article add you name to the DYK nom. I nominated it today as its the 5th day, that's why!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:01, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

I also have Vladimír Vondráček and Antonín Heveroch not nommed yet. If you can find a ref or two to add to them they should be OK as they are, perhaps find a double hook? If not, don't worry!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:05, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Capri churches

Do you intend to do any more on your recent articles on Capri churches? I certainly don't want to upset ongoing work but I think at least Santa Sofia deserves much more than a stub. Perhaps some of the others too. As you may have noticed I'm a bit tied up with Denmark's Bornholm at the moment but I would be happy to help out with some of the Italian churches too when I have time. With your Spanish and French, you should not have much difficulty yourself but maybe you have other priorities? Just let me know whether I can be of any assistance. --Ipigott (talk) 20:43, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

I'll try to do a bit on Santa Sofia today if I have time after another Bornholm church. --Ipigott (talk) 08:12, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

WP:POV concern on article Greg Craven (teacher)

Rosiestep, Just saw your message on my usertalk page. I'm a newbie at Wikipedia and want to honor the conventions. Could you elaborate how an edit of mine brought up the issue of WP:POV. Was it just because I edited the entry about me, or was it something about the content of my edit?

I've never added content, but have made corrections a couple times. Once when I was labelled an activist, which I am not. Another was when it stated I lived in Portland, citing an erroneous newspaper article (I live in Corvallis, OR). Interestingly my edit was reverted with the comment "citation needed," which I found entertaining!  :-)

And the most recent one of 20 April 2011 was to correct both a mischaracterization of my own viewpoint, and an interpretation of my work which is both incorrect (though common), and directly contradicted by the very body of work it refers to.

If you could give your assessment of the appropriateness of my edits and how they might cause any concern vs. POV concern, it would help me stay cool with the conventions in the future.

And I have no idea where (or how) I will receive your response. If you wouldn't mind, could you give me a heads-up using the contact form on www.gregcraven.org telling me where to find your response.

Thanks much. Greg CravenWonderingmind42 (talk) 22:29, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi, yes, thank you, Rosie, that would be great. I sometimes tend to run out of steam, in a trivial way, when working alone. My sandbox contains an example: I know what I have to do to make the page presentable, but somehow I keep putting it off...

Btw, I hope Chris Laarman gets to see this too.

Nice one, I've nommed. Victor Denain unfortunately was into day 6 so I couldn't nom. Perhaps Catequilla/Pomasqui Valley, Tasitolu, Hotu-iti, Wandlebury Hill Fort will interest you. The first three are into day 4 now, they only need a few sources and scraps I think. The other two I started today.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:11, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Boston Caucus, Otia Imperialia and Massachusetts Charter feel free to nom, they don't really need more than a few minutes work. Same with Helene Wildbrunn, can you think of a hook? Amara, Nubia, Askut and Nong Het were the others which have DYK potential I guess but another 4 days to do those! A mish mash of articles I find keeps it interesting! Oh I nommed Otia already but you can add your name to the nom if you find anything!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:00, 21 July 2012 (UTC).

DYK Tasitolu

Hello Rosiestep. Just wanted to let you know the DYKcheck tool is still reporting that Tasitolu is short on size, by how much I can't really be sure. It can't be very much. Hello Rosiestep! When was Tasitolu changed to a national park? Do you have a source? AFAIK there are still only plans to create a national park, although they build a luxury hotel there. Greetings, --J. Patrick Fischer (talk) 10:42, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

  • Hi J. Patrick. If you check the edit history, you'll see that the national park claim was first put on the page by Dr. B during translation from the de wiki article. I tried to find a ref to substantiate it and came across one that did, so I added it. But as I didn't think the ref was strong enough, I later removed the national park wording altogether from the article. I haven't checked the article in a couple of days, so I don't know if someone has put the national park wording back into the article. Thanks! --Rosiestep (talk) 04:24, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

BTW His Baldness has managed to obtain a series of new buttons in User:Dr. Blofeld/monobook.js. There are translation template basic, name and date of birth outline, cite web outline, references/reflist, external link section with official site link, DEFAULTSORT outline, bio-stub template and de: interwiki empty link. They're superb for increasing speed of transwiki. They're basically all for those repetitive things you have to do manually on every article, should make it easier. You'll have to remove the : though from the :subst:pagename when using it. You can copy them into your own monobook if you wish. Let me know. They'll appear in the tool bar immediately above the page when you click edit.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:58, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Started a load of Category:Churches in São Paulo (city). You might be interested in expanding a few, the Ortodoxa cathedral in particular looks impressive, but most of them are quite attractive buildings.

Thanks, also started Main Cellhouse. Block B and block C could do with fleshing out a bit. Feel free to nom as a multiple hook, I'll help out with QPQ.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:48, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Rosie, that means a lot to me, that's the first compliment I've had on the Alcatraz stuff! I got inspired by watching this, its a must see, very interesting. I remember visiting it in about 1997 and I just remember how creepy the buildings looked and the negativity surrounding the place. Horrid place, but most interesting, and I think given its high status wikipedia should have more information about its time as a prison so I hope if people visiting it the info will help them. Its valuable I think to have an insight into what it was actually like in the prison at the time! Yes I saw a photograph of the citadel somewhere, I'll make a start on that later I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:40, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Started Alcatraz Citadel, more info here you might like to add. A google book search of Fort Alcatraz too ought to turn up much.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:14, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

I've made a good start on Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, mostly using my/our material pasted in and paragraphs cut from the main island article. Once history is improved and it is fully researched the ones which have articles such as the dining room and recreation yard can be condensed and some of them such as the Power House, New Industry buildings etc probably best merged into it. First port of call for it now is to thoroughly research its history I think. Some of the notable escape attempts can be incorporated into the history. A problem though is the references as many of the same books are used and as they have the same ref names from the ref maker listed lot of refs at the same page. It will probably be best to do a bibliography and go through and list the page numbers for those. I'll try to get that done tomorrow. Hopefully Nvvchar will return and help us out! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:47, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome to contribute jointly with Dr. B. after dedicating your nice DYK article number 505 to me. I deeply appreciate this gesture. I have already started the collaboration with articles on Alcatraz suggested by Dr. B. I will be adding more in the days ahead once my laptop which has many drafts of articles is repaired.--Nvvchar. 01:45, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Awesome! :) --Rosiestep (talk) 01:49, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary article needs most work on escape attempts and notable inmates. More info on the escape atempts can be added form the list and elaborated on and improved. I've sorted the reference with sfn notes so if you find more book sources please add them to the bibliography. I intend nominating this for GA once we are done as I think it will reach GA once the escape attempts and notable inmates sections are fully written. I redirected the cellhouse article as I think the majority of it would be a duplicate. You might find more on Stewart Iron Works.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:22, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Rufe Persful might interest you, needs more sources. I also started Fakanau which you might find enough for DYK for and can go towards our A-Z!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:35, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

With Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, I know you don't like working on huge articles, but if you could research a few of the inmates in the table in google books to add a wider range of sources and info to level them out (Machine Gun Kelly is short for instance) and anything further on previous escape attempts not mentioned and clean up that section it should be virtually ready for GA nom.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:13, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Go for it now if you like. I'm just tying up the associate warden names. I only found a great quote from Henri Young which I added. Would be a good idea to browse some of those books, especially that and the Alcatraz gangster years book I used for the D-Block quote which might have some valuable anecdotes.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:23, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I looked through that history of Alcatraz book, its mainly photographs and summaries of some of the guards who worked there. It has a lot of great images from the Chuck Stucker collection or something, I saw a photograph indicating he grew up on Alcatraz as a kid, son of one of the guards so has acquired an excellent photo collection probably from his father. I've asked calliopejen to see if we can access images in the book of the fort period anyway. I must say that researching and writing this Alcatraz article itself has been one of the most enjoyable for me I've ever written and I'm really proud of it! Not to mention it being extra special that it marked Nvvchar's triumphant return to editing! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:13, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

That's great thanks! And more aevil because of the barbed wire! A combination of the prison block and prisoner images and the text I really think help to create a true sense of the place which I think is cool! i fished around in flickr yesterday and uploaded a lot of images I thought covered the most important parts of the prison. The hospital corridor looks super creepy though, you can imagine walking down it and seeing a ghost or something! Your help on all is greatly appreciated, as normal.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:34, 8 September 2012 (UTC) In early 1982, I made it a point to visit the prison during my first visit to USA. It was an experience. --Nvvchar. 04:34, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes, it could use a final polish, thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:26, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Good grief, List of Alcatraz Island features, there was me thinking I was quite comprehensive on the buildings! Well done on that! We ought to see if we can get the lighthouse up to a decent level, not sure if there is enough for a 5 times expansion.,♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:15, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm planning a double DYK with Francesco Stancaro ‎ and Osiandrian controversy, important topics related to the Prussian Protestant Reformation period, so you may find more on them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:03, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

I've made a start on Palacio de Velázquez. Lots of red links; I sniff a multiple DYK with the 1883 exposition and the main architects perhaps, all of which have articles on Spanish wiki.

something like DYK that the Palacio de Velázquez was built by architect Ricardo Velázquez, engineer Alberto del Palacio, and ceramist Daniel Zuloaga, in time for hosting the Exposición Nacional de Minería of November 1883?♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:21, 11 September 2012 (UTC) As per reference 1 the map shows the spelling as Keravat, hence Keravat Airfield could be taken as the correct spelling.--Nvvchar. 18:47, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Government of Papua New Guinea spells it Kerevat.[2] UNESCO spells it Kerevat [3] Look again in google books. The actual hits for Keravat are much less than that of Kerevat despite what it appears bring up in the figure?. Not to mention Kerevat is the spelling used by google and formal geonames entries on it. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:42, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Ok, Kerevat. Thx. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:07, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Siegfried

I gave it a miss - I listened to the broadcast last year (very impressed with Jay Hunter Morris), and I can't say I'm excited by much of what I've seen of the production. My father and I took in the last of the old Schenk production in-house - now that was a sequence of evenings to remember...

How do you find the production? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:09, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Siegfried is probably my favorite of the four. (Not that that's saying much - I'm not an especial Wagnerian.) I suspect it's because it's a.) the most operatic in shape, and b.) about the least-excerpted, and consequently least familiar to me. I saw a bit of the Forest Murmurs, which was nicely done. Overall, though, there's a magic to the Schenk production that I find lacking in the new one.
My own soundtrack for the evening? An eclectic program by Louis Kaufman, newly purchased. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:57, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Ok. I'm working on it. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:48, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Bachwoche Ansbach DYK elligibility runs out today. I was thinking a multi hook with some of the venues, namely the Orangerie in the Hofgarten, the great hall in the palace Markgrafenschloß, and the churches St. Johannis Church and St. Gumbertus Church and Theater Ansbach. If you view the Ansbach article the Gumbertus looks nice. The official website has a summary of them to start with:

[4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

I've nommed Vacha Reservoir.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:51, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

I've started the buildings but please don't edit them until Gerda has proof read them. Markgrafenschloß of Ansbach is still missing though. Best to google search with Ansbach as I think there's a few palaces of that name in Germany. I'll nom this evening anyway to meet the deadline but they'll need work over the next few days. Why did you nom those Spanish articles without me getting around to editing them? I thought the idea was to have a big multiple DYK set for them all? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:34, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

That would be cool, but what about including Exposición Nacional de Minería (1883)?♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:56, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Yikes that's a lot of articles. Great effort! I will try to get through them all and give them a scrub in the next day or two but I'm editing the phallic article at the moment seems as it is the subject of such criticism.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:30, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

nommed. Need assistance with QPQ and articles over the next few days though! Plenty of time to expand them before they hit the main page. I will try to finalize my edits to the SPanish stuff tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:39, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Turns out Markgrafenschloß is Residenz Ansbach. I've merged. Gerda and I have decided to split and nom the buildings at a later date which you are of course invited to help with. Check to see if each article has been proofed by her first though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:53, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Its a foldable fan from France 1770-1780. Although I loved the image of that girl and the one of Elizabeth Taylor both of which I thought were wonderfully 50s. That ET photo I find very alluring. How about using double images like in Sisimiut, we could have both as the lead picture.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:59, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

I suppose I have added a fair amount of text to Solomon Islands dance. The town article can not be expanded to 5x.--Nvvchar. 18:16, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

I have also completed my inputs to Queen Elizabeth's corgis.--Nvvchar. 04:18, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Found a great Australia-based newspaper archive http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/ . But it appears to be a tremendous resource generally for things also out of Australia. Bristol Hotel, Gibraltar was expanded by it; those sources didn't pick up on google. I think we need to look for more newspaper archives and research engines as google books is spectacular of course but by no means to be all and end all of information gathering. I think I'll list em on my user page. The biggest archive is http://newspaperarchive.com/ but you need a subscription to view the articles. Nonetheless it looks gigantically productive and will likely turn up snippets which can be used in articles.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:55, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Rosie, can you find some more from Trove to expand the Queen's corgi article?♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:03, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

I did look in flickr for free images, none other than the statue. Good job, hope you are feeling better soon Rosie!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:29, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

I've begun expanding Honiara, I think we can make a x5 expansion. Reached end of page 9 in google book search Honiara. You might more, especially on the 1942 battle and each of the landmarks mentioned by google searching them could be expanded to have sub sections on things like the museum, hotel, botanical garden, caves, and others. Also newspapers should have a fair bit to elaborate more on the 1998-2006 violence. Looking on google maps will also identify further landmarks for mention and specific churches. In particular can you retrieve some info from the French text here?♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:47, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

I have completed this second article for Bulgaria Tsankov Kamak Hydro Power Plant. However, I have a problem to fix pages 8,9,17,22,29,30-31 to specific texts in the article of this reference.[1] You may please edit and add as required. Thank you.--Nvvchar. 01:04, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
I have nominated Queen Elizabeth's corgis on DYK page for 21 September. I hope the hook is OK, since I wanted to fit the picture. You are welcome to change the hook.--Nvvchar. 00:18, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

See what you can add to the short sections of the landmarks of Honiara and we'll see how much is needed if any after you've done to consider DYK.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:47, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

This was an odd edit, I thought that important, lots of mention of the ropeway in other sources. The distance 5km thing though can be discarded.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:18, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Hehe brain fart, sure I'll restore part of it. Will look at the hill article later, nice clean work if you know what I mean!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:34, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

I was going to say the same thing, I think there's a lot of components to this site which should have articles and now#s the chance to do a multiple!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:43, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

I have fixed the image of the Kali temple and also fixed tags and references.--Nvvchar. 18:36, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
There is a problem with the height of the Pavagadh hill. They are different in two articles, 800 m or 700 m. I could not find any more material for the Bawaman Mosque and not even a picture. Pl see if you can find something. I have fixed the infobox but without picture.--Nvvchar. 05:36, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

You might find more on Ludwig Gies.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:10, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Well...the hook is 8 characters too long. All the rest looks good. Get the hook shortened, and we can pass this. Maile66 (talk) 23:05, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
