A comment from a candidate

Hi Rschen! Someone passed this along to me and I first want to start off with I totally respect you and your opinions. While I'm sad that you have a "bad feeling" over my candidacy, I completely respect that. I wanted to clarify a couple of points. To be honest, I had to run a google search to find our interaction and I had totally forgotten about your hat collectors page. With that being something you (used to) track, I can certainly understand your perception of me being "over eager". It's not surprising that new users with little knowledge of the wiki and its operations run for RfA. It's seen as something cool and exciting and most are harmless - they just want to help. That's where I was. I have since grown to understand the complexities of the flag and really don't have much of a use for them. I've recently been asked about an interest in RfA and said perhaps in a few months.

In regards to our interaction over the hat collecting list that you held, I know we've spoken regarding it and apologies were issued over the brashness. We both explained our points and came to common understandings. If I recall correctly, WT101 was subsequently placed back on the list after we ended up speaking due to further requests made. Again, this was quite some time ago and without pulling everything back up and going through it I can't clearly recall.

You also commented on one of my statements: "If you have patience and you take the time to lay out your thought process for an individual who doesn't understand why you're doing what you're doing - you can almost always end a dispute." You asked "..then why do we have an ArbCom?" - We have ArbCom for the same reason that we have courts and arbitration - not everyone is able to have patience nor are they interested in collaboration. ArbCom has become a necessity, along with having courts and arbitration in real life.

I'm not going to go through each post because as I said I respect your views and opinions, but I wanted make a clarification and also offer up an explanation to you. The reason that I'm running for Arb, as said in my statement, is simple - the community (not in whole, but in part) has a stigma about being underrepresented and not having a voice. They're "policed" too much and Administrators aren't held to the same standards as non-sysops. I'm hoping to give that voice and perhaps build that bridge of communication into a panel that governs the body. We're not a student council, no - but small steps towards representation help -- besides, there's apparently never been a non-admin on ArbCom. Have a great weekend! Thanks for your comments. I didn't want to give details of the specific incident out of respect to WT101, but now that it's been said, another concern that I had was the manner that you handled it at Meta. Arbitrators do often have to work with stewards and file requests (and I've dinged at least one past candidate for something similar, though it was a much bigger dramafest) - and having an arbitrator causing drama at Meta does significant damage to interwiki relations and, quite frankly, makes en.wikipedia look bad. As far as non-admins running for ArbCom, I've found that generally the ones that run aren't familiar with the key issues or how ArbCom works (even for the arbitrators that *do* get elected, there's a lot of bureaucracy to get used to, and a lot of downright nasty issues that most people don't know about) and I fear that this would be a significant handicap for them. I'm not opposed to non-admins being on ArbCom, but the ones I would trust are generally the ones that haven't run for admin because they're not interested in politics, which would mean they wouldn't run for arb either. --Rschen7754 01:53, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

You couldn't be more right about the politics - and perhaps I will fail, and should I - at least I can say I tried. I'm not doing this due to politics or eagerness as I said. I've never been involved in a case that's come before ArbCom, but I can't imagine it being much different than Student_court that I was involved in in my school days. The issues are different, the wording may be different but the overall meaning and processes are likely to be the same. There's a learning curve for any new job and it takes some time to get settled in (and usually once you settle in everything changes - I hate that! :)). All you can do is try.
