Catgory renaming

[edit]

Hi, just thought I'd let you know that if you think a category should be renamed, it's better to list it at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion. If the community agrees then a bot will do all the tasks. AnemoneProjectors 10:57, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Graham Westley

[edit]

The current one that I took would appear to be the only one I have access to. Don't think I have any other pictures of Westley from the 2009 FA Trophy Final or last season's game at BC and a flickr search brings up nothing. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:57, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lawrie Wilson

[edit]

As you suspected, the fact that he never played a first team match for Colchester is the reason the article was deleted. Wait until he has played in the Football League for Stevenage, and then ask me to restore it (if done now, it would violate WP:CRYSTAL - i.e. we cannot be certain that he will actually play a game until he does). пﮟოьεԻ 57 13:41, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Bostwick

[edit]

Howdy, thanks for the note. I'm afraid I don't have much expertise on this. I can do one of two things: I can check with editor who nominated it, Jimbo online (talk · contribs) or re-create it in you userspace to discuss further. Let me know if I can do one of these for you. TeaDrinker (talk) 02:14, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Why did the club drop "Borough" from the name? As a neutral with a soft spot for you due to being in Hertfordshire and keeping the hooligans team up the road out of the Football League, I was sad to see it go. The lead is fine, but perhaps another sentence about it in the history would be warranted? WFCforLife (talk) 20:21, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, those are my kinds of areas as well. I spent yesterday doing some tedious but necessary maintenance, and slowly but surely I'm getting the lists done. I have Stevenage F.C. watchlisted though (I watchlist any club that is likely to be edited by Watford or Luton fans), and you've done some top work there. As for our mutual friends, even I conceed that Luton have a respectable history if you ignore the hooligans. But I've made the point to Luton fans on several occasions that having 5,000 season ticket holders, bringing 40,000 people to Wembley and having people miss out on tickets doesn't make them a big club. It means that their town has over 35,000 glory hunters. WFC (talk) 13:08, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"bringing 40,000 people to Wembley and having people miss out on tickets doesn't make them a big club. It means that their town has over 35,000 glory hunters." – funnily enough, I agree. Just thought I'd say. Cliftonianthe orangey bit 06:00, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good article nominations

[edit]

Hi there, I noticed that you've listed a few Stevenage players on the Good Article nominations page. However, you need to complete the nominations by substituting the {{GAN}} template at the top of the articles' talk pages. The articles look pretty good overall but one problem that I can see with them is that they refer to "Stevenage" rather than "Stevenage Borough" when discussing events prior to 2010. General consensus is to use the name of the club as it was at the time, so you might want to sort that out to avoid any problems when they are reviewed. Cheers, BigDom 14:21, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photos

[edit]

I've not been able to find any Wiki-friendly photos on flickr, but this collection of photos could contain the players you're looking for (I'm not wised up on what Stevenage players look like so you'd better off looking through, I'd probably get them mixed up). So if you'd like to use any of those photos give me a shout with the links to the photos and I'll contact the author on flickr; fingers crossed they'll relicense them. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 17:55, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've now sent the author a message asking for permission to use the photos and I'll give you a shout and upload them onto Commons if he hopefully does change the copyright. Also, I notice he's now uploaded a collection from the Pompey game. You can take a look at that if you like and let me know if there are any photos you'd like uploading. And in response to your second comment, I've certainly seen instances of work I've written being pretty much directly copied. For example, the squad list in the Stoke City match programme for our FA Cup game was pretty much copied exactly from Wikipedia. When the YCFC article (incorrectly) had Djoumin Sangare's name written as "Djoumine Sangaré" they had it written exactly as that and gave Luke Graham's a Welsh flag (which is correct as he was a youth international for them, but I've not seen him recognised as Welsh in many places other than Wikipedia). Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 14:14, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, have just got a reply from him and he says the photos are strictly copyrighted and that strict company rules apply. But if you find any other pics by a different author, just give me a shout. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:08, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Appearances

[edit]

I noticed that in some cases the numbers doesn't match in various of your articles. For example List of Stevenage F.C. players states that Mitchell Cole made 142 appearances and scored 22 goals for Stevenage, but his own article shows numbers 140/22 of those 121 apps earned in league games (but in fact it should be 120 (19+26+42+33) and overall career numbers are off too.

Numbers doesn't check out in some other cases too - Lawrie Wilson and Steve Morison. Maybe there are others too because I didn't check many articles. Maybe Boroguide and/or Soccerbase have mistakes in their own numbers.

I thought I give you heads up this matter because I love your work on wikipedia and want to help you get these lesser known club/player articles to be in best shape possible. Because of your articles I now have a soft spot for Stevenage and always check out how they are doing on weekends. Utinsh (talk) 12:33, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jay O'Shea

[edit]

Hello. Just to say what a brilliant job you've done on Mr O'Shea in such a short time. I wish I had your enthusiasm. Couple of things you may be unaware of. When you use the same citation for a second time, you don't have to copy out the whole thing again, just use its name with a slash before the > and no closing </ref> tag. So if the original definition has <ref name="O'Shea signs">{{cite news etc etc etc}}</ref>, to use it again you just put <ref name="O'Shea signs"/> (see WP:REFB#Same reference used more than once).

The other thing is Soccerbase urls. If you just use the plain url http://www.soccerbase.com/squad_season.sd?teamid=2499 for Stevenage player appearances, it takes you to the page for the current season. You need to add the seasonid parameter to the url to reach the page for other seasons, e.g. http://www.soccerbase.com/squad_season.sd?teamid=2499&seasonid=138 for Stevenage appearances for 2008/09. Same applies to individual player pages: http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=43628 is Michael Bostwick for the current season, http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=43628&seasonid=140 is Michael Bostwick for 2010/11 whether that's the current season or not. I've fixed the ones on O'Shea, but you might want to check your stats tables for other players. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:45, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have failed this article owing to sourcing concerns; the cited sources do not support the given facts. Given that this is now the third or fourth time I have noticed this issue in your GA nominations, I would suggest that you check this aspect very carefully before nominating further articles. This is not to say that the facts are wrong: sometimes it is difficult to reliably source information. However, in a GA, such sourcing should be to a good standard. --Sarastro1 (talk) 18:36, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Roberts (footballer born 1983)

[edit]

Hi, I've never uploaded someone else's image having been e-mail their permission so I'm not sure of the exact process involved, but I think it'll depend on what licence they've attributed to the image. Was this indicated in the e-mail? I see you attached "© Kevin Coleman" below the image; if he's retained all rights on the image I don't think it can be used. I think your best bet is reading the OTRS page on Wikimedia Commons, which is for when permission to use an image his been given via e-mail. Hope this is of some help. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 15:07, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'd upload it as your own image, then leave a note in the summary explaining who took the photo etc. I've done that with a few like Stevland Angus and Christian Hanson, although this was years ago. Hope this has helped, --Jimbo[online] 19:37, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Invite to the African Destubathon

[edit]

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:14, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Soccerbase urls

[edit]

Hello. As to "You're not fixing the Soccerbase URLs, they were working perfectly before so there was nothing to fix".

Soccerbase changed their url format halfway through the 16/17 season. Which meant that pages that started the season with the then-correct season_id=146 in the url needed changing. The {{soccerbase season}} template was updated to cope with it, some editors changed some pages manually, and someone commissioned a bot run to convert the incorrect ones to the new format (not me, I just helped clean up the mess that was left).

If you click on the url http://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=87884&season_id=146 and look at what you get, you'll see not Alex Samuel's stats for 2016/17, but instead his stats for the current season.

The same problem existed with 2017/18 as well, but because the format changed before the start of the 2017/18 season, it didn't affect as many articles.

You don't have to use the template if you don't want to, but for verifiability purposes, it does help Wikipedia if the urls in references point to the page they're supposed to. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:28, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Luke Amos‎

[edit]

GiantSnowman has been removing Luke Amos’ involvement with the first team for a while now. Being on the bench is very noteworthy and many Wikipedia pages also contain this information. Amos has made the bench on 3 different occasional vs Liverpool efl, vs apoel ucl and vs Newport fa. Also it is true that he was playing for Tottenham u23 while at Southend, look at Tottenham u23 teamsheets last year. I hope you can help update this page as GiantSnowman feels the need think only he is right. User:86.156.17.212 14:52, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why is him being on the first-team bench notable? Where does it say he was playing for Spurs U23s/on Southend bench during early parts of his loan, and why is that notable? Per WP:BRD please not not re-add without consensus on the article talk page. GiantSnowman 14:45, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Again, him being on the first team bench is just one-line in a routine transfer article. It is not that notable - and it was not mentioned in the source you provided! See also WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. But I've included it to avoid further conflict. Same with the Southend bench/Spurs. As for your edits, they are largely OK, but not perfect, hence why I have to clean up after you. You need to abide by WP:NPOV, WP:OR and WP:CITEVAR. GiantSnowman 16:00, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I saw his name on the team sheet - I did not see where the source said that was his first ever first-team appearance as you claimed...do you see that crucial difference? Something being true is not enough; it must be verifiable. GiantSnowman 16:56, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This should be disucssed at the article's talk page and resolved based on what reliable third-party sources report. If being on the bench is very noteworthy, it should be easy to find sports magazines writing about it. Huon (talk) 18:33, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Has already been resolved. The "Help" notification was sent by another editor who, by the looks of it, has also had some issues with Mr Snowman on the Amos page. Not sure either of us can be bothered with moving the conversation to the article's talk page, I certainly can't. Cheers. SBFCEdit 19:07, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A friendly tip

Instead of typing in the 'ndash;' in-between the scores, use the first dash on the 'wiki markup' tool on the bottom of the editing window. It should save you a bit of time doing it that way. Iggy (Swan) 17:07, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Ways to improve Owen Cochrane

[edit]

Hello, SBFCEdit,

Thank you for creating Owen Cochrane.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

What is needed are references from significant coverage about this player, and not their own words; in multiple secondary sources which are WP:RS; that is your guide. Lists, Team rosters, pages listing matches and results, databases, Instagram, Soccerway, Facebook, none of these are reliable sources. (There have been changes to the notability guide for sports - see WP:NSPORT ) You may also read WP:PRIMARY which details the limited permitted usage of primary sources. A more comprehensive guide is WP:SOURCES ... Providing sufficient references, ideally giving more information about this player, that meet these criteria is likely to allow this article to remain. Lack of them or an inability to find them is likely to mean that this article is not suitable for inclusion. Kindly do the needful. Thank you

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Whiteguru}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

I nominated it for GA but it got rejected as the editor said the sourcing for his early career and Stevenage was inaccurate. It shouldn't be too far off FA standard though if you want to take a look at it and nominate it yourself. EchetusXe 13:17, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Makise Evans moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Makise Evans, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) WP:NFOOTY is no longer a valid SNG, so GNG must be met. It needs several refs from independent, reliable, secondary sources to pass WP:GNG. It should have at least 3 of those. Please remember that routine sports coverage does not satisfy GNG, and that interviews, being primary sources, do not go to notability either. Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. About Jamie Cumming

[edit]

Hi, about the recent edits we did on Jamie Cumming, I understood that this case had not reached a very clear consencus, And I have looked for several talks and debates in WikiProject, they concluded that youth career should never overlap with senior career, so the middle ground you did may not be the best solution. But I see your point that he earned a medal in 2018–19 UEFA Europa League so I recovered your edits. Cheers. Chelsdog (talk) 10:42, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
