Valjean

I was in the process of posting a comment at the ANI regarding Valjean's blatant BLP content fork violations before that thread was pre-emptively closed. I am copying it here as you seem to feel the same as me. Please feel free to ping me if you intend to take further action on the BLP violation in Valjean's userspace and/or about their conduct in trying to keep their BLP violations "live" and I will comment there accordingly.

The problem is that the page in question is an entirely negative page about a living person - is that not a violation of WP:ATTACKPAGE, which is even more important when the attack considers a living person? The mere fact that a page is verifiable to reliable sources does not mean that it is not an attack page. Wikipedia should not feel subject to "size limits", but at the same time we have multiple policies (1, 2, 3 and others) that address the creation of forks that are intended to bypass due weight and other content policies to attack a living person. In my view, this is a conduct issue - the person being complained about created an attack page in userspace - it's purely a POVFORK and should be deleted as such - and the mere fact that a canvassed discussion that had many !votes based on opinion of the living person subject ended in "no consensus" does not change the fact that creating POVFORKS/"attack forks" about living persons is not permitted on Wikipedia, whether they are in userspace or not. Valjean is free to attempt to get it created as an article - but they have chosen not to do so either because they know it will not make it as an article, or for other reasons. That does not mean WP:BLP does not apply, and a violation of that policy is not somehow okay because it is in userspace. Valjean, being an experienced editor, should be more than willing to have moved their "draft" to mainspace with the sources it has if they felt it would pass muster. The fact they have chosen to keep it in userspace under the guise of "article development" when it is blatantly a POVFORK in violation of BLP is a conduct issue.

-bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez (User/say hi!) 05:39, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

Let's talk about this tomorrow. The draft is in personal user namespace because it's still in development, as allowed there. That's one of the purposes of userspace, so don't get anywhere near harassment of legitimate actions done for the encyclopedia.
Drafts are not considered perfect or reliable. Look at the official template on the page. It is not ready for mainspace. That's the reason it's there, so AGF and drop the aspersions. Stop judging it by the standards of a finished article. @Tryptofish: is going to help me. This is one of the allowed methods for article creation. We also have plenty of allowed one-POV negative articles because that's how RS treat some topics. NPOV just requires we stay faithful to the topic and cover the various aspects and "sides" mentioned by RS.
This subject is not covered at Wikipedia and has enough RS coverage to easily pass GNG for its own article. It's not a POV fork or spinoff.
We cover ALL types of topics here, so your IDONTLIKEIT is not a legitimate argument to justify opposition in an AfD or MfD for a new article. Wait til it's ready for publication. If there are still problems then, it should go back to draftspace or userspace to be fixed, per WP:Preserve. Good night. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 06:22, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
Attack pages and POV forks about living people are not allowed whether they are drafts or not. I find it interesting that you’ve butted yourself in here given the bludgeoning concerns already raised about you. -bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez (User/say hi!) 06:28, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
I agree with your assessment Berchanhimez. Personally, I think Valjean is either incompetent or a troll. They're incompetent if they don't understand what an attack page is despite being told a dozen times or more and persist in their imaginary definition that such a page has to contain individual attacks rather than simply be a wholly negative page on a living individual. They are also incompetent if they honestly think that canvassing on multiple talk pages—Red-tailed hawk, That Coptic Guy, Tryptofish, PackMecEng, Walsh90210, SmokeyJoe, Doug Weller—and attacking editors with walls of text / bludgeoning at noticeboards is ever going to anything other than disruptive. If they do know what they're doing and it's deliberate, well, it's no longer incompetence but trolling. Gotta be one or t'other. And this is an editor who has been here ~2-0 years and proudly states that My fingerprints are still in our most important and fundamental policies and guidelines. Unfortunately, actions speak louder than words, and it's probably unwise to draw attention to one's longevity of tenure—and been writing policy—if one is then going to demonstrate nothing but a breathtaking insouciance in breaking them, pleading ignorance and blaming other editors.
It's also slightly odd that they post here with such... keenness. I haven't (yet) got around to applying WP:NOBAN, but their last two messages to me have been removed and ignored in quick succession, which you might think is a bit of a giveaway  :) ——Serial Number 54129 11:54, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

FAR invitation

Hi @Serial Number 54129,

For some moment, I've seen your contributions to the Wikipedia project as well as in FAR. I nominated Adichie for FA, and it's been over five weeks or more. It has just received two supports with one full review. While I am a first-timer, I am also afraid of being archived (though I don't know the exact process), I would love to see you chime in anytime you're less busy. Thanks. Safari ScribeEdits! Recent reverts

I reverted your and Elinruby’s remarks because they were in a closed thread. I am not trying to refactor other users’ comments, otherwise I wouldn’t have marked the changes as minor. As the thread was closed by an uninvolved bureaucrat I think you should respect that close. Dronebogus (talk) 12:45, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

You should respect WP:TPO. You've been here long enough. I think you should just quit drama-mongering and help write an encyclopedia. ——Serial Number 54129 12:52, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
You are replying in a closed thread. Who’s the one bludgeoning at this point? Dronebogus (talk) 12:57, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
One reply in a closed thread does not constitute bludgeoning. Replying to every single other edit made very much does. Do you even read these pages you keep waving at other people?! Bizarre. And why are you posting on Isabelle Belato's talk? How has she been involved in any of this?! ——Serial Number 54129 13:03, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Don’t do this

This is an extremely bad close; not only are you not qualified to call an extremely contentious discussion, you are arguably involved in the overarching meta-dispute per here. Dronebogus (talk) 10:00, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Rollback

Regardless of any other outcome, I owe you an apology for this.[1] Rollback is for vandalism or other bad-faith edits. I didn't know I had hit that there, as I was reading through a lot at the time, but I still should have noticed and self-reverted. So, I apologize for having done that with your edit. If I had meant to revert it, I would have done so with an edit summary indicating why. Seraphimblade Talk to me 15:01, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, Seraphimblade appreciated, and I know you would have. To be honest, if the context had been different, I would have assumed accidental rollback immediately. That I didn't, well, didn't help. Anyway, I'm just glad that whole episode's over with no harm done to all  :) All the best, ——Serial Number 54129 15:24, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

FAC review request

HI! I really appreciated your taking the time to help review Maria Trubnikova for FA earlier this year. I nominated Nadezhda Stasova, an article about another member of the Russian feminist "triumvirate", for FAC review a month ago and it's been going through the process. However, it's only attracted 2 full reviewers and an image review so far, and though all 3 editors supported, I'm worried it'll get archived soon without another reviewer taking a look and helping develop a broader consensus. Do you have any time to comment on the article soon? If not, no worries of course, but if you do, thank you! —Ganesha811 (talk) 13:24, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

Thanks Ganesha811, for the reminder! I'd totally forgotten. Sorry about that. But FAC is such a PITA that by the time my last got promoted on 5 June, I took a few weeks off the process. See you there. ——Serial Number 54129 13:52, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

TFA

story · music · places

Today's TFA, Felix M. Warburg House, was written by Vami_IV and Epicgenius, introduced: "This article is about another of the great houses that once lined Fifth Avenue in New York. Specifically, this is the mansion of Felix M. Warburg, a Jewish financier who ignored fears of anti-Semitic reprisal to his decided to build himself a big Gothic manor in the middle of New York City. Although the Warburgs no longer remain, their legacy does: the museum is now the home of the Jewish Museum (Manhattan) and the building largely survives as they left it. It's a beautiful building and I hope you will all enjoy it."! - in memory -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:02, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

Deletion review for French ship Gapeau (B284)

An editor has asked for a deletion review of French ship Gapeau (B284). Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Owen× 11:15, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

The language you used when closing WP:Articles for deletion/French ship Gapeau (B284) made it clear that you were aware that this was not an uncontested AfD, which meant it was not a candidate for a non-admin closure. While your read of consensus may be accurate, this type of AfD is best left for an admin to close. Also please note that only four days have passed since the last relist; we normally give each relist the full seven days before closing. Thank you. Owen× 10:38, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi OwenX, you're wrong, and it's very discouraging to see an admin pushing a non-policy based argument. If you believe that what we actually do no longer reflects what is codified, then you should seek to overturn the policy.
(Incidentally, my language reflected the fact that I had recently seen a similarlymisleading interpretaton pushed by another admin elsewher, not that the topic was contentious.) ——Serial Number 54129 10:51, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

I know you didn't mean any harm, but you really can't move whole discussions by other people that way. It can change the meaning, depending on where it is. You can link or quote it, but you really shouldn't move them from one venue to another. One exception is if you are moving from WP:AN to WP:ANI, and you put a pointer, and you explain the move afterwards in the body, etc, but this isn't that. Dennis Brown - 02:54, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:

The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

About the “attack page”

I was recording the apparent stance of editors of the Gilbert and Sullivan project on infoboxes to make a case about systemic bias on the project as almost all active users don’t seem terribly fond of infoboxes. Even if you disagree with the categorization that hardly constitutes an “attack”, especially in comparison with Cassianto comparing me to the Schutzstaffel. Dronebogus (talk) 20:47, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

You either have not read, or have read yet still munderstand, WP:POLEMIC. It does not matter how you interpret it. It is defined by itself. And if you don't think random lists of names are creepy, then there's more recent, anglocentric examples. ——Serial 21:05, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Oh for god’s sake it’s about systemic bias on a WikiProject it’s not a hit list! Dronebogus (talk) 21:10, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Is it your intention to piss off as many people as possible, Dronebogus, or are you short of constructive things to do? CassiantoTalk 21:08, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Calling people nazis is constructive? Dronebogus (talk) 21:10, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
I didn't call you a nazi - more lies. I said that your list, which features the names of editors who dare to disagree with you on infoboxes, was akin to what the SS did to dissenters 90 years ago. I've asked you a few times now, please remove my name. CassiantoTalk 21:29, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Your friend SandyGeorgia copied it for god knows why. Unless he agrees to delete the copy it’s pointless for me to delete it. Dronebogus (talk) 21:33, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
You're right, she is my friend, and I'll thank you kindly not to misgender her. I think you've annoyed enough people here over the last few days, you really don't want to be adding to it. Delete my name, it's a simple request. CassiantoTalk 21:43, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) - Why don't you just remove it yourself? Tim O'Doherty (talk) 21:45, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
I’ll delete it, but if there’s a copy floating around it’s pointless. I’m on my phone at a restaurant so it’ll be a minute Dronebogus (talk) 21:46, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
That must be some restaurant, if you feel that arguing the toss over a simple deletion is better than participating in some light dinner conversation with friends or family. Deleted it yet? CassiantoTalk 21:54, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
It's not my user space. CassiantoTalk 21:47, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
So? If you'd just edited it in the first place with the edit summary "Removing my name as I don't want it here" and left you could have easily avoided the unecessary kerfuffle. Tim O'Doherty (talk) 21:51, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
If you're so sure of yourself, why don't you do the collegial thing and delete it for me? Mark my words, if I interfered in someone else's user space, which I wouldn't as a mark of respect, there would be a tonne of admins lining up to take shots. CassiantoTalk 21:59, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Believe me when I tell you I couldn't give less of a toss whether your name's on some tinpot hitlist. Just baffling when some people get upset over things like this. Starting to belive there are individuals here that are simply addicted to confrontation. Tim O'Doherty (talk) 22:06, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
I already explained it’s not even a “hit list” but it’s clear some people don’t want to listen either. Dronebogus (talk) 22:16, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
The reason you don't care is because your name doesn't appear on that list; and the fact you call it a "hitlist" [sic] should tell you why this has caused me to worry and feel the need to engage in this "confrontation". CassiantoTalk 22:22, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
I can assure you I have more important things to worry about than my username appearing on some Wikipedia subpage. I don't sit in my house and fret over a conflict on a website with no bearing on my safety in real life. At the end of the day it's some letters moving on a screen. Not worth the trouble of bullying an editor into submission. As the kids say, "touch grass". Tim O'Doherty (talk) 22:27, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
I have nothing further to say to you. Good evening. CassiantoTalk 22:30, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Not really evening for me anymore, dunno why you'd assume my time zone. But in any case, good day / evening / night to you too. Also, apologies to SN for having this stupid proxy war spill out onto his talk page. Best, Tim O'Doherty (talk) 22:33, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
I didn’t know what her gender was Dronebogus (talk) 21:45, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
You can't click onto her user page? Not a good look, assuming someone's gender based on their user name. I wonder what our friends at the WP:GGTF would have to say about that? CassiantoTalk 21:50, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
It was a mistake. Please stop finding reasons to be offended. Dronebogus (talk) 21:55, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Please don't tell me what I can and cannot find offensive. This really isn't your finest hour. Still waiting for your kind confirmation that my name has disappeared from your list. CassiantoTalk 22:03, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
This isn’t yours, either, but in any case I’ve blanked and U1’d the stupid page. Now go do these productive things you accuse me of not doing. Dronebogus (talk) 22:19, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
You're too kind, thank you. Serial Number 54129, as you were - sorry for the disruption. CassiantoTalk 22:26, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

I remember HMiJ's RfA had an odd oppose that I called out, something to do with that? In any case, judge a man by the quality of his enemies, I settle for nothing less than admins and arbs nowadays. Come out to Black and Tans, and check my edits if you can

Hi Serial,

I took your advice to edit the page to add the views of scholars on the definitions they use for what a Black and Tan actually is without waiting for Leabharlanna Éireann. This went down like, well, a request for a pint of black and tan at a SF Ardfheis.

I'm not getting much sense at the talk page, so I wondered if you could have a look and see if anything I've added looks unbalanced, and maybe edit it if it does.

All the best for the New Year. Boynamedsue (talk) 10:54, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

"curb kissers"

What kind of thing causes someone to call people "curb kissers" at a GA review? I would advise you to strike this comment. jp×g🗯️ 12:12, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

It seems that the term refers to folks who drive too close to the curb and scrape their wheels. Chris Troutman (talk) 12:18, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
Chris is, of course, absolutely correct. JPxG, on yer bike. And don't don't scrape that curb on your way out! ——Serial 16:10, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

RfA religion comment

I encourage you to strike your description of a good faith editor's comments or religious values as "divisive and exclusionary superstition" found here. I believe it attacks a living person. I also strongly disagree with the rest of your comment (and am an atheist) but I believe you are entitled to express an opinion about how RfA should work. — Bilorv (talk) 18:05, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

Jumping on others' coat-tails is not a good look; it is certainly bad for the posture. ——Serial 18:14, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
I stopped participating at RfA years ago once it stopped being a legitimate vote, so if you're offended that a bad rationale stands on par with a good rationale: it doesn't. Our editor cohort often differ in what they value in admins and some of us would decry those rationales. If a Wikipedian supported (or opposed) based upon some tribalism, you might bristle but condemning that identification slanders everyone in that group. As you don't necessarily know who all on this platform is some variation of monotheist, speaking of religion in such divisive terms can only further alienate you.Chris Troutman (talk) 18:26, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, CT, wise words indeed; however, I think it was after about a year that the sudden realization hit me that alienation, aggravation, extemporization and, frankly, near-excommunication were either an inherent component to the project or an inevitable consequence of participation in it. Cheers, ——Serial 18:50, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
It took me like three years to realize that. I don't know if that makes me an optimist or just slow. Levivich (talk) 18:52, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
Congratulations, first time I've seen a support reply moved to the talk page, quite the achievement! :-D Levivich (talk) 18:35, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
Ha! Very droll. And unfortunately even more accurate. Thanks Levivich. Law of unintended consequences, and all that, I guess  :) ——Serial 18:50, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
For what it's worth, IMHO "God made us imperfect so it's OK to make mistakes" is some good opium for the masses. Why call that out? That is objectively a better RFA vote rationale than many others (including the classic "they made this mistake once"). If it's good morals, who cares if it comes from superstition? My philosophy is to save the opprobrium for the "God said to kill you" types. That is the bad opium. Levivich (talk) 19:00, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
Of all the inflammatory anti-opiates that discussion needed, it was me mentioning opium. Now, that would have been burning oil on troubled waters. Would a quote from Dawkins have gone down any better, I wonder. (I assume not, since if there's one thing people can't seem to live without, it's the opportunity to get incensed over something.) ——Serial 19:11, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. Clarification

FYI, I think you misunderstood my close (in which case I may not have written it clearly enough). I did not intend to imply that there was no consensus for anything - in fact, I saw a rough consensus to admonish Nihonjoe and remind all editors of our policies on COI editing. My closing note was intended to *be* that admonishment. When I wrote, "There is no consensus for any further action here", I meant action beyond admonishment. —Ganesha811 (talk) 17:26, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Personal attacks

Apparently you don’t know what a personal attack is. That’s unfortunate. Guy (help! - typo?) 00:52, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

Unfortunate?

Not for me, pal. I'm glad to see you got up the courage to comment after the thread was closed, but better late than never, I suppose. In the meantime, feel free to get on yer bike and move along—your presence here is wholly unhelpful. Your advice as an editor is about as useful as it ever was as an admin. Don't post here again, you know the drill. ——Serial 01:45, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
