Invitation to Organize Wiki Loves Love 2019

Wiki Loves Love (WLL) is an International photography competition of Wikimedia Commons to subject love testimonials happening in the month of February 2019.

The primary goal of the competition is to document love testimonials through human cultural diversity such as monuments, ceremonies, snapshot of tender gesture, and miscellaneous objects used as symbol of love; to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia, and other Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) projects. February is around the corner and Wiki Loves Love team invites you to organize and promote WLL19 in your country and join hands with us to celebrate love and document it on Wikimedia Commons. The theme of 2019 is Festivals, ceremonies and celebrations of love.

To organize Wiki Loves Love in your region, sign up at WLL Organizers page. You can also simply support and spread love by helping us translate the commons page in your local language which is open for translation.

The contest starts runs from 1-28 February 2019. Independent from if there is a local contest organised in your country, you can help by making the photo contest Wiki Loves Love more accessible and available to more people in the world by translating the upload wizard, templates and pages to your local language. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Hey @Newslinger: would definitely love to collab on this! Perennial source identification has been on my radar to add into the script, so excited to hear you're interested in implementing it - it'd be great to collab and have it merged into master.

As you probably saw, the git repo for the project is here. index.js is the main script, and domain categorization objects are located in data/ (the script doesn't do much more than simply string-match domains). Once perennial sources are categorized in JSON format, it'll be easy to add icons for them. Let me know if this sounds all right or if you were thinking of another implementation.

Also, this is a total shot in the dark, but: if you happen to be nearby, WikiConference North America will be in Cambridge Nov 8-11, and both Sky and I will be there and hosting a session on Cite Unseen. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:06, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to type up all of my thoughts before I had to take a life-related wikibreak last week. I didn't intend to leave you in the dark.

The WikiConference North America watchlist notice was actually how I found out about Cite Unseen. The presentations in the schedule look really interesting, and I'll definitely watch any videos that are released, but unfortunately, I can't make it to the conference in person. I hope both of you enjoy the conference!

It would be great if we could complete the perennial sources integration before your presentation, since this would make a nice example of community collaboration. (Please let me know whether this is a practical goal.) There are a few points that we have to figure out, and since there are three of us, I'm going to organize the discussion in sections to make it easier to follow. ​— Newslinger talk 19:36, 17 October 2019 (UTC)

Personally capacity-wise I probably don't have too much time to devote to this prior to the conference, as both Sky and I are actually helping organize the conference itself. Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC) After reading through your 2018 presentation slides, I'm curious about where the data is coming from. Is all of the data from Media Bias/Fact Check (RSP entry)? If that's the case, we'll have to somehow reconcile the fact that the English Wikipedia community considers MBFC generally unreliable, since it would be a contradiction to use a data source that classifies another data source as untrustworthy. Perhaps giving users a choice between: Sources created by the community (including RSP and others, see below) Media Bias/Fact Check Other third-party sources (see below) would resolve this, as Cite Unseen would show only one consistent group of data sources at a time. — Newslinger talk 19:36, 17 October 2019 (UTC) Perennial sources list (RSP) JSON is exactly what I had in mind. There's also Ad Fontes Media's Media Bias Chart (MBC), which is occasionally referenced by editors on the reliable sources noticeboard. I'm not sure whether it's reliable, but it's better than Media Bias/Fact Check because it has a named staff, discloses its methodology, and reveals some of the data its ratings are derived from. 2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. Uprisingengineer's submissions

Hey there. I've discussed this with SuperHamster over on Discord, but I'd like to hear your thoughts as well. I've noticed that Uprisingengineer has submitted several Russia-related articles to Wikipedia Asian Month. However, I noticed that in many if not most of these cases, the articles in question don't seem to involve Siberia, and the apparent links to Siberia or Asia in general can be peripheral at best. Do you have any ideas on how these articles can be addressed, and if they can still be accepted for WAM? I've held off accepting the articles for some time now for this reason. Hi, there! I was curious, too, about the seeming delay in my submissions. Anyhow, you are right that I have submitted a number of Russian articles for "Wikipedia Asian Month." Culturally, Moscow and "Western" Russia are called "European", but geopolitically, they are called "Asian." The Wikipedia article on Asia places it between "Eastern Europe" and "North Asia" (although, East/North are not opposable coordinates), and when I google "Where is Russia", I am not even given a result, I am simply told "Asia." I would like to say also that the WAM contest image includes Russia, but, as I now am closely examining it with a magnifying glass, I see "European Russia" cut out.

If I was making the call, we would study which tectonic plates, and not which "continents", people are on, as it would eliminate any ambiguity. India's "Indus" river is in the Middle East, and Russia's capital "Moscow" is in Europe. But nobody has excluded India's submissions. Seems like an odd way to do things.
