Snake Tales

Slight Smile I did explain my revert re the snake entry on the Gundagai Article page. I put my explanation on the Discussion Page for the Gundagai article. The "black snake was the wife of the brown" may be Aboriginal cultural content that refers to a big volcanic flow here at Gundagai, one that was black lava and one a mud flow. The man who made that comment (George Bennett) was the first boss of the Australian Museum and was a highly skilled scientist and medical doctor. I still need to put in the page in his journal that that comment of his is on. I will go revert it all back to how you had it then put the snake content back in, then look for the 'outlaw' stuff. We call them 'bushrangers' here (in Gundagai but in Australia too), not "outlaws". Also, I want to add another comment to Gundagai's talk page - as I look at the Snakes section, it's not clear to the readers that it refers to local myths. I think many will read it as many people do a google for Gundagai info as the town is so iconic in Australia's story. I do have a degree in 'Australian Studies' as one of my degrees. I also live at Gundagai and my lot have been here since the 1840s. The person who is complaining about ghosts and Aboriginal content on the page went to High School age 15 level. I just realise readers might still interpret "tales" as actual reports - not good. Something like "Snake (whatever lingo for Aboriginal for mythology)" might be better. Non Australians aren't familiar with the folkloric attributes of Gundagai. I still say it needs a lot of paragraph breaks. I haven't followed the article's history to know which problem user you're referring to. I first heard of the place from the mini series Changi where the POWs are singing variations of Road to Gundagai. Also, no need to put four tildes in your edit summaries, just at the end of posts on talk pages. SlightSmile 02:21, 20 October 2011 (UTC) Reply - the stories/tales about Gundagai snakes are real events considered important enough for the National Library of Australia in Canberra to preserve under their 'Trove' project. The note from esteemed scientist George Bennett is his recording of something that cannot be western science that he is referring to as scientific thought tells us that red snakes are not the wives of brown snakes - so it must mean something else. I do not know what he is actually referring to but guess it may mean the volcanics here as a cultural story that by coincidence is mirrored in what snakes actually do. I was intendign to put some up re the volcanics here that is little known, (fully cited from its author who is a senior scientist). Its not culturally appropriate for me to put Aboriginal stories that I author here as I am not Aboriginal. I do not author Aboriginal cultural stories. Nor do I author Eskimo stories or English stories. I am Australian of European descent. Australian Aboriginal people and culture are a continuing culture. Their culture has continued for thousands of years and is not in the past as some think. "Lingo" is not that great a term to use as Australian Aboriginal language is Australian Aboriginal language or linguistics etc. the same as English language is English language or linguistics, not English lingo. We don't demean the culture by slipping into a slang term for a cultural group's linguistics. However Australian Aboriginal people can use slang re their culture and sometimes they do but that is cultural. Their cultural not mine. Australian Aboriginal stories are Australian Aboriginal stories or culture or mythology or law or lore or belief. If I put the non Aboriginal snake stories up and called it Aboriginal snake Dreaming stories that is incorrect as they are non-Australian Aboriginal stories. Best just left as its all appropriate. Anyone who clicks on the cites for the snake tales will find that those cites link to our National Library in Canberra, then to the sources they came from so to anyone it will be easy to see their origin the same as links to items on the Olympics and other events have the same links from wiki to where they were reported. The Gundagai page link to the Mirriyolla Ghost Dog story is sourced from and cited to an Aboriginal person so its posted here appropriately. Snakes don't have tales anyway. In Australian slang, a snake story is a suspicious story the same as 'I caught a fish this big' story is. The term 'snake story' in Australian ways, sort of alerts the reader to the fact there may be a degree of exaggeration. I don't believe there is exaggeration in those snake stories I put up and cited to their sources. What would I know though. I am not the source of the snake stories. Australian mythology and folklore is a thing not immediately apparent to people who do not understand it the same as platypus and kangaroos baffled people from other cultures, in the 1700s. At the time that the KJV was written, the word "slay" meant to take a life, and the word "kill" meant to slay criminally. Today, the word "kill" means to take a life, and the word "murder" means to kill criminally. Language changes. Australias National Debt - What's your motive for deleting my update?

Hi,

Wondering why you reverted my update of Australias National Debt back to the old information from September 2011? Notwithstanding the old budget deficit figures from 2009/10?

I validated my update with links inserted from the Australian Office of Financial Management (for the current Aus Gov debt) and the Aus Govs Budget Papers of 2011/12.

Not sure what your motive is? Could you please explain?

Oh, I understood you the first time, but thanks for clarifying. The older version of my upload was really golden brown and gross and for some reason I had the same thing happening on another image. Just a poor job on my end. I think now hopefully it'll be ok, looks more natural. Re. La Bolduc, the number of red links has been reduced considerably by creation of stub articles. Another editor reverted me when I removed some other links, so it seems that there is some disagreement as to what should be done. A well written article is going to link to everything it should link to, regardless of whether the article exists or now. Hell, you linked WP:REDLINK, so try reading it. Some articles should probably not have any redlinks, while non-English subjects from a century ago or more (such as La Bolduc) are often going to require a lot. WilyD 08:32, 21 July 2014 (UTC) If everything is for the readers, then you need to place your own embarrassment about the encyclopaedia being unfinished below the task of writing an encyclopaedia to inform the readers, direct them to what they're looking for, etc. If red links embarrass you, write the articles. It's your own statement that you're prioritising avoiding embarrassment over writing an encyclopaedia; if you're here to write an encyclopaedia, act like it. Just because a maintenance tag exists, doesn't mean it appropriate for all articles. Adding inappropriate tags to articles is disruptive to those people who are trying to create an encyclopaedia. The immediate problem would be the need for a source. All other persons listed in the article on Alien abduction have articles. Presumably, they have sources. The IP tried to add this name but I reverted due to lack of an article and lack of a source. I wonder from the attempt whether the IP is a non-English speaker or a rather young person. I will look quickly for a source. Otherwise, I will place a welcome template. There would no reason to spend further time on this. Thanks for reverting the vandalism to my talk page. I think that it is proper to refer to a transgender person as the gender as of the time the statement covers. So currently in the case of Laverne Cox, that would be female. I suppose I could have got that wrong, or maybe it would have been debatable, if I had the wrong time period in her life. I wasn't aware of that dispute when I reverted the offensive post on your page. To be honest of all things in the world, that issue is so not a priority with me. If I was to give it any thought it would be: if someone wants to be a she then let them be a she. As far as encyclopedic accuracy is concerned, I think the readers will understand we're in a grey area here. I just spent more than five seconds on this story. I don't hesitate to straighten out the amateurish, clunky, convoluted and turgid writing I find here on Wikipedia in abundance. BC/BCE

So if it's a frivolous issue why do you insist on wasting your time imposing your POV? Note: the original usage was BC in the article in question, then some edit warrior came along to change it to BCE - I referenced the edit. As you'll know, such changes go against the policy of first use, hence my revert. You actually mention the BC / BCE issue in a thread on your talk page from last year, so you appear to have an interest here. For me, whenever I see BCE my first thought is "I bet that was originally BC, and someone with an agenda has come along to change it". I concern myself but thanks for the thought. I agree it's disruptive someone with an agenda going around changing BCs to BCE. Probably someone with an ax to grind about religion. Going around changing the other way, BCE to BC is no better.

Hi Slightsmile, I noticed that on 10 June 2017 you asked at a site how first Eucharist "can be a rite of initiation." Just stopping by to explain that the three sacraments of initiation in the Roman Catholic Church are Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The explanation that the three sacraments are part of the sacraments of initiation is easiest to see in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)in which those who have never been baptized into any Christian faith receive baptism and confirmation and then their first Holy Communion. The Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox initiate neophytes as infants where they receive baptism, confirmation, and first Eucharist in the same ceremony. (Infants receive the Precious Blood on a special spoon.) This derives from practices in the ancient early church in which catechumens entered the waters of baptism and exited to receive the Holy Spirit. Place Names need Qualifiers

Sorry, do not agree. Most people in the western english world are beholden to social media - social media creates a false view of the world on almost everything. Perth Australia, along with other absurdities - denies accurate geographic knowledge. For a start the argument that created 'perth' as the prime location without qualifier was infested with those editors who dont like qualifiers. I was fortunate to have a relative who had lived in Ontario a very very long time ago, who never stated the name of a place without qualifying where - on the basis that there were more places with ambiguity than, no as many as, the late frank zappa alluded to when utilising the place names for his dislike of urban us culture all those decades ago... (how many springfields in the us say?). I think that place and country is wrong. For some very good reasons. Some mostly former editors of wikipedia thought that google hits was enough to determine primacy. I say may they live in Ontario and try living amongst the place names that require qualification as a matter of life or death perhaps. I like qualifiers, for a whole range of reasons. Please never assume that there is a collective geographical 'good sense' amongst fellow wikipedians. Tasmania has been designated as a separate country by wise editors. I rest my case. The things that we touch on are things like various carnivores (not elephants) in the room. People used to get beaten around the head and other parts of the anatomy over primacy - i find the effort and angst created by having primacy in articles or items to be quite anti-encyclopediac - the general resolution over that could have to be abandon things tied into the google algorithm - google hits are neither a template or standard that wp en articles or subjects should be tied into imho - there are subjects and topics that do not show up on the omnivorous algorthym of whatever guiles or guides it. So why respond on this? Binary names - place and location (within a narrower context for the qualifer, and not country but something more specific) - are endless issues that we as a community should have resolved years ago, but due to the nature of the place... Pity youre elsewhere, this is a long beer or three, or tea, coffee, whatever - that should have been resolved at a wikimania, or something similar. Bet youre a canuck - go geulph!
