1968 South African GP

[edit]

I noticed that you requested assessment for this article and are hoping to promote it to start-class. I was assessing the article and I think that it sits somewhere between start and stub-class. I'm still promoting it to start class, but I feel that you should add a little more prose in order to fully meet the requirement. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. 1950 Non-championship races

[edit]

Hi there, great work on creating the articles for these races - you're basically doing the bit I don't like doing! I'm adding results tables for the articles as you go, I hope that's okay with you. I thought I'd write and go through the list of races for 1950 to make sure we're on the same page as regards the order and the titles of the races. Silhouet sometimes doesn't anglicise the names of the races, whereas most other sources do. We've anglicised all the WDC events so we should anglicise the N-C ones too, though sometimes it's not possible.

Of the non-anglicised ones, "Nations Grand Prix" doesn't make sense in English and you never see it used, and "Circuito de Pescara" is the established name for the Pescara race. For the 1957 event which was a WDC race, it's usually down as "1957 Pescara Grand Prix" but the earlier ones were not called Grands Prix as such. Any thoughts or ideas, please let me know and we'll figure it out together. Seems like it's basically just us doing this! Bretonbanquet (talk) 18:19, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The thing is, none of the sources we use call it "Nations Grand Prix" and we need to be consistent with at least some of the sources. We might be guilty of inventing a name for something that was never used. "Nations Grand Prix" is also the name of a motorbike race, and that name usually was translated into English. As for Pescara Grand Prix, the article explains how the name of the event changed over the years, and that the Gran Premio title was not used until later - in this case oldracingcars.com is wrong. This is the problem with these old races, the sources don't always agree and some of them are not correct. We could take these to the wikiproject if you think we need some more input.
The length of the circuits is another problem - some of them changed quite a bit, particularly those which used public roads. I find Silhouet to be pretty consistent with my other sources - books etc - and that's the one I usually use, plus it's easily verifiable there as it's shown together with the results of the actual race we're describing. Again, the Wikiproject might have more ideas.
There's no hurry to get these done so just do some as and when you get the time. Don't neglect the more important stuff! Besides, when we get to 1952, it's going to get very complicated as there were no F1 races as such, just F2, and there were a LOT of F2 races back then. I'm not even sure all of them are notable enough. Bretonbanquet (talk) 19:53, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I also see that the Grand Prix des Nations was named after the Circuit des Nations, rather than "Nations" in general, making "Nations Grand Prix" rather nonsensical. However, Readro created an article for the 1946 race, and called it the 1946 Nations Grand Prix, so he might be someone to talk to. I do quite strongly disagree with this title though.
